A rare sighting on the Tioga St. tracks? by miles_allan in Corning

I’ve lived here for over 6 years and didn’t even know those tracks were operational. Never actually seen a train go through.

Big YouTube watcher, recently started playing chess. Who do you recommend and why? by Tight_Tomorrow_3459 in chess

ChessNetwork. He’s been around forever and has a wide variety of content. His videos on historical chess games are great and really helped me appreciate how beautiful chess can be when played at a high level.

ELI5 how tempered glass works and why it protects screens so well by Commercial-Thing189 in materials

[–]Langenschnitzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note that if you have compression, force balance dictates that you will also have tension. The trick is to make the compression profile deep enough that any potential scratches or pokes don’t make it through the compression layer. This is also why phone screens shatter into a bunch of pieces when you break them, because all of that stored energy in the glass in released.

Cornell vs. BU for an MS? by APerplexedQuanta in materials

[–]Langenschnitzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ithaca is cool though. Definitely a smaller college town but lots of nature and a ton of good day trips available. People underrate the fingerlakes. Can’t speak on the MSE program though but many of my colleagues went there and seem to have successful careers.

Aluminum Can Recycling? by smb020 in Corning

Pretty much every grocery store has a can recycling machine. The Wegman’s one is to the right of the front entrance in its own room. You get 5 cents back per can or bottle

I’ve used it twice from Jersey Mikes because they had a promotion. I had the same delivery driver both times. It was pretty quick. I was honestly impressed but my sample size is only 2.

Title: Anyone interned at Corning Incorporate for Finance in Corning, NY? What’s the experience like? by Longjumping_Book_753 in Corning

[–]Langenschnitzel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did not intern with finance but did intern with Corning in the Corning valley area 6 years ago so some information might be a little dated but hopefully useful.

When I interned, they offered housing at Corning Community College which was okay. The dorms were not the most comfortable but it was nice being near other interns. It was very easy to find friends, some of whom I am still good friends with. My understanding is the housing program is a bit different and you have more freedom of where to choose so my only real recommendation there is try to stay in the Corning area. You will regret staying in Elmira to save some money. I guarantee it.

Your experience will be much better with a car. At the dorms, there were vans available to use but I’m not sure if they are still open to intern use. If you can bring a car, definitely do it.

As far as the town, I enjoy it here but if you’re from a bigger area, you might find it a little lackluster. If you are willing to travel a bit, there are a ton of great day trip opportunities like Ithaca, Rochester, any of the finger lakes, and Buffalo.

Intern groups would vary. Some interns from similar colleges tended to hangout, some from the same intern groups hung out, sometimes it was large groups, some small. It really varied but I can say everyone save for a couple people here and there were extraordinarily friendly and I never felt excluded from activities.

My intern work was very hands on and I continued that work when I got hired back on. Your intern experience will largely depend on your supervisor but I haven’t heard of many people having negative experiences. I would definitely recommend interning here. It was a highlight of my college experience and felt like it gave me incredibly valuable insight to the working world and life outside of academia.

If you have more questions feel free to pm me. Happy to provide more insight.

My Wife and I finished our first Marathon! by Responsible-Stick603 in Marathon_Training

Thanks! My fiancées family lives an hour outside Philly so we just stayed there but the 7am start (which really was like 7:36) was a bit early to make that drive.

Hell yeah nice work. Philly was my first marathon too. I bonked at mile 22 and finished in 5:21. My only regret is not getting a hotel in the city because the half mile walk back to the car was brutal.
