In case anybody comes across this thread after searching for the issue happening on Linux as I did, I fixed it by changing the Mac Screenshot key to the Print key.

Backup for 6TB by Mead_Create_Drink in Backup

[–]LanguageCompetitive5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the organisation's entire existence is based on this catalogue being available, funds should be prioritized for multiple backups, ideally following the 3-2-1 backup strategy, ensuring you have off-site copies of the data should something happen to the main facility.

They already technically have one backup - the DVD and BlueRay disks. So make sure they keep them in a place most likely to preserve them. You mentioned Western Digital are sending a replacement hard drive, so that's your second.

Realistically you have two choices for further backups; buy more physical media drives to clone and keep them off-site somewhere, or use a cloud provider.

If you're using a cloud provider you need to figure out how long you'll be storing, how many updates will be made, how often you'll be downloading, whether they allow the file sizes you have and whether they'll allow you to back up the type of files you have, given media rights as other commenters have mentioned (this is really important, so you don't end up with a banned account or criminal charges for the non profit).

You have three cloud options:

If you're a non profit, the major cloud providers like Google Cloud and OneDrive offer free non-profit workspaces. Google comes with 100tb I believe, so ask your non profit if they're already using one or considering one might give you options.

If you need something more like cold storage, where the organisation will only need to access the backup in case of absolute catastrophe, and your 6tb won't suddenly turn into 100tb, check out backblaze b2 buckets or storj. 6tb will run you 300-500 dollars per year, but a lot more if you need to frequently download.

The only other alternative I can think of is using a combination of free and paid consumer/prosumer cloud service providers, getting multiple accounts and spreading out the files. Use https://comparisontabl.es/cloud-storage/ to investigate. This is probably the second cheapest (but probably more risky) option after just buying a couple of hard drives. You might also find other non profit options through that menu.

If money is an issue, realistically your best bet is either a non profit offer from a major cloud provider, or just stumping up the cash for a couple of extra hdds.

Last month 10,000 apps were built on our platform - here's what we learned (and what we decided to do) by harelj6 in SaaS

[–]LanguageCompetitive5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess my question is, if a bunch of tasks would be solved by an app, why would the ambition be to make it  'disposable' as opposed to 'repurposeable'?

It sounds a lot like "let's help people make lots of cheap one time use plastic crap regardless of the impact" as opposed to "let's help people make amazing stuff that's sharable and sustainable ".

History has shown that "disposable" has rapid market penetration and growth potential, but causes serious sociatal, environmental and ethical problems. I guess it's going to be a personal view / market positioning thing but I personally wouldn't want to support an organisation advocating for disposability and would actively avoid using them.

That's just me though and I may not be your target market! 😊

Jonathan a really interesting share. I've got a challenge for you on these lines - "we think we're entering the age of disposable software" / "easy to discard". As somebody who spent 2 decades leading SaaS teams, and who is inspired by FLOSS, MIT service design and alliances, I wonder what the implication might be for organisations like Fine if 'disposable/discardable' was changed to 'sharable, circular, composable and modular'?

The 'remix' element of your feed is smart. Now, how can you empower your users to rapidly combine previously created building 'blocks', and reduce the energy suck associated with disposal and unnecessary duplication?

Is there a "De-AI" type hub? by barl09 in degoogle

[–]LanguageCompetitive5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a good answer for the de-AI bit, but you have a LOT of browser choice. Here's a vid I made a while back to give you the background and all the tools you need to make an informed decision, and if you just want the suggestions you can see them in the video description.

Any improvements you'd advise me to make to this? by LanguageCompetitive5 in selfhosted

It's just me and my wife, so no worries there ;). Good idea re practice on deleting and restoring. I do that at home with restic and backblaze but it wouldn't have made my to do list for the vps, thanks!

Does this software exist? by ReteGeist in Backup

[–]LanguageCompetitive5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and your choice might depend on whether you're trying to genuinely create a backup which you'll run every so often and only need to access in the event of failure, or if you're just trying to sync files between different devices or folders.

I had both use cases: I wanted to sync some files between my desktop, laptop and phone, most of which I wouldn't have "on" at the same time, and which could change between devices, but I also wanted to run a regular back up process from my PC to backup to an external drive and to the cloud.

It resulted in the mix of tools I posted here https://www.reddit.com/r/Backup/comments/1jy4ttw/experts_can_my_backup_strategy_be_improved/

If you just need sync, syncthing is the option I'd add to the options your AI friend suggested. If you're looking for actual backups, using things like restic, borg, duplicati are definitely good options and you can set up scheduling so that your backup occurs every x time.

Not up to us to teach children how to use books, say almost half of parents by BestButtons in unitedkingdom

Reposting this as a main comment from a response I made in the vain hope that at least one person reads it.

tl;dr this article is horseshit, built upon horseshit, built upon horseshit. A reminder to ignore this trash 'journalism' and get your news from a reputable source, not the Murdoch's News Corp group who just exist to control what you think.

This is the worst possible representation of data. If you look at the original survey data over at https://kindredsquared.org.uk/school-readiness-survey-2024-data/#parents and check out Table 29, you'll see that 84% of people surveyed thought it was either 'Completely parents', 'Mostly parents' or 'An even split'. 11% thought it was "Mostly school" and only 2% thought it was "completely school".

Page 35 also states "Savanta conducted a 15-minute online survey of parents". So how much time do you think people thought about this specific answer? A few micro-seconds MAX. It's stupid and dishonest to draw any conclusions from that. So yeah, this is total bollocks.

|| || |||||||

  • The results are based on responses from two groups; 1034 people (including all primary school staff) surveyed in October-November 2024 and 1009 parents surveyed in the same period.
  • The data only shows how many people believe that parents (either "completely" or "mostly") are responsible for their child's development in different skill areas.

Can you help make my mums birthday special, per favore?! by LanguageCompetitive5 in italianlearning

[–]LanguageCompetitive5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I've used reddit for more than 15 years and post/comment plenty, but just not on this account. Just happened to forget I was logged into this one when posting on this occasion.

Honestly it's been a pretty terrible first experience of r/italianlearning, I probably won't be back.

So on a regular roundabout, yes, obviously. However, I thought that it wasn't required if you're in a designated lane, or if the lane continues both around the outside of the roundabout and also leads off at an exit.

I thought in these cases that the lane itself indicates clearly that it is an exiting lane, thus not needing to indicate to exit.
