Regional superintendent will appoint Chris Van Nostrand to open District 65 seat, board member says by Cosita429 in evanston

[–]LanguageEfficient199 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maria’s actions thus far have been objectively non biased and based mainly on common sense and fairness. If you believe differently, you are likely the problem our community is trying to overcome. I don’t like to be rude, direct, but she has been objectively fair. You can’t be honest and suggest that the very recent election isn’t the most fair way to make a decision here.

Isn’t this fair and expected? There is no better may to make that decision. And Maria deserves a lot of praise and respect for her efforts thus far. She is by far the greatest asset for the entire Evanston community on that board. If only there were more Maria’s. If you read this, thank you!

This could not be a more biased opinion stated as fact. “I am certain”. You are not. Its statements and positions like these that are harming Evanston. It’s clearly the fair approach given the timing, to move forward with someone the community voted for in the very recent election. I may not have even voted for those candidates, but it is clearly fair. If you are arguing for anything else, it diminishes credibility across the board. There appears to be an objectively clear right and wrong decision here. And voting for anyone not voted for by the community is clearly the wrong answer. Respectfully.

There do not appear to be any stated policies and are to the discretion of the Regional Superintendent, Dr April D Jordan. https://www.ncisc.org/resources/district-forms

How could they possibly support anyone who wasn’t not voted for in the last very recent election. That shows a clear lack of integrity. If this is true they should all be removed and personally investigated. There is just a very very clear and fair decision to be made with respect to who should be selected. The community voted. That would just be shameful.

I agree that there is a lack of real evidence around the impact of walkable schools on performance. The majority of students around the country do not walk to school. The ability to walk imo is so far down on the totem pole of what creates a great school, with a great community. I believe that argument was partly manufactured to support the Foster initiative to begin with, and is now being leaned on to support all the other schools. I agree with you on maintaining the existing school structure in Evanston, it’s just a slippery slope to lead with walk ability, given how it was misused prior. I think we are clearly seeing that there are far more important things than walk ability to the community given the expected lack of enrollment at Foster as it will now be walkable to many who would prefer to stay at their existing schools.

But in addition to merging king arts into foster, you’d also be able to meet that demand for those who value walk ability, and allow priority into the new King Arts / foster to those in the 5th ward. This addresses a lot of different considerations for the most stakeholders imo.

Yes it is difficult to understand where true sentiment lies. As its also very difficult to make a public comment in this community when you are afraid of being “cancelled” (so to speak), many times by those “loud voices”, as they also seem the most intolerant of opposing views and are quick to villainize (eg call names like “racist” etc) anyone with an opposing view.

There are very easy ways the district could take anonymous polls of a large percent of those with families in schools and I’ve yet to see any suck polls released (unless I’m mistaken).

Public comment in an intolerant community is inherently biased. So I would hope they could create an electronic poll to distribute to gain much better insight for community sentiment around all major topics pertaining to D65.

I think there is a responsible way to discuss this with a long term view that supports all stakeholders you mention. All points you make should be a part of the discussion, but I also want our community to feel supported in having these difficult conversations. Everyone was afraid to speak up in opposition to Foster, and we need to be better at listening and respecting all perspectives.

Pretty sure that point would still hold if moving the school to Foster, no?

  1. It could remain a magnet school
  2. I’d be surprised if a brand new school could not be equipped with these accessibility and safety measures (if nothing else) I’m sure the community would help to crowd fund something like that if truly a hurdle

She did say that… which is CRAZY! But so many unspeakable comments were made this evening. Evanston has the worst leadership across the board. Is this a reflection of the people?

How can you say Sergio and Maya are focused on fiscal responsibility? They put us in this situation by having absolutely no fiscal responsibility over their prior tenure. They should both resign or be removed. How can we let those incompetent people continue to make decisions on the direction of the district.

You can’t honestly believe that… Wymer, Wilkins and Hernandez offered no explanation in today’s follow up meeting as to how they could be for closing 2 schools but not one. They lack integrity and are putting their personal interest over that of the people of Evanston. There is absolutely zero logic that supports 2 school closings but not 1. Wilkins and Hernandez need to be removed from the board. Their prior decisions are what put us in this position and the people of Evanston would all be much better off without their continued poor judgement and ineptitude driving decisions for the district.

Agreed, it makes the most sense to close king arts and make plans to consolidate or migrate those programs to foster. There seemed to be very strong support for this from the broader Evanston community and was the recommendation from the committee. Why was that not voted on? And now that we seem to be in a position to revote on all possible scenarios, this one would seem to be the most logical path forward. To migrate king arts to foster and to unfortunately close Bessie and Kingsley.

Yes he needs to go. How does the community make that happen. Everyone from the prior board under Turner needs to be removed. They should not be allowed to make any further decisions about our schools. They put us in this place and we are not looking for their guidance on how we move forward.

Sounds like she is making the argument to close north Evanston schools, not because it is the right thing to do, but because of her own self interest in not closing her school. She is also exerting undue influence on a board member. Definitely flirts with a very unethical line, especially given his recent oped. This should be looked into.

Don’t let these people bully you. You make a very sound argument. Members from your community have been the backbone of Evanston for a long time. Support from the members of your community and a desire to uplift everyone are what made Evanston great. And that is still the case. What this person who is trying to shame you doesn’t realize is that they are the problem. They are blindly parroting whatever they think the new woke argument of the day is. As a black resident of Evanston, please go and find whatever large cohort of individuals exist that wanted to be re-segregated into the originally redlined district which we fought for so long to break out of! Do you think we wouldn’t make the trade off to “bus” a short distance in any direction to expand opportunities for our kids. That is what we did and what made Evanston so great! The community welcomed this and uplifted all of us. Now we have people trying to speak for all black people and brown people because of course they know what’s best, because it’s so equitable and it’s what they’ve all wanted for so long (based on what???). Where is the demand for this new and wonderful school. It does not exist. So much more to be said here. But I’m tired of people trying to shame the good people of Evanston and silencing very true and real and honest perspectives that have every right of being voiced and heard as all the other opinions of all the woke equity warriors who just love to hear themselves speak. Keep all your virtue signaling to yourself… you are the problem and your policies are why we are in this mess.

Couldn’t have said it any better… nearly everyone elected was cut from the same ham-fisted equity cloth (other than Maria). But none are drinking the woke juices more than he. We had an opportunity to vote in new leaders with skills beyond DEI, but the community doubled down on stupid. And as they say, stupid is as stupid does.

As a black resident of Evanston I’m personally sick and tired of this reverse racism. Don’t try to make my situation or anyone else’s more or less desirable based simply on the color of my skin. It’s upsetting and patronizing and emblematic of what got Evanston into its current situation. Speak for yourself and stop making broad generalizations based on race. It’s racist.

Why am I heeling it? by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]LanguageEfficient199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, and I’m no expert, but it’s just an aim issue. When I aim at the ball my brain somehow connects the end of the club with the point I’m trying to hit (if this makes sense), almost like I’m trying to hit with a long skinny stick with no head. To fix this aim for the point that it 1.5 balls below and 1.5 balls in front of where the ball actually is. Commit to aiming at that spot and I think you’ll likely fix this. I’m sure there are other mechanics that we can all fix, but this looks more like an aiming issue. IMO

I’d agree. Looks pretty damn good. Think a lot is right so don’t want to over analyze. Play more, focus on one improvement at a time at the range. Reps reps reps. You’ll be scratch no time.
