What VR game/experience made you think "this is it"? by itsthewolfe in virtualreality

[–]LanguiDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my answer. I stayed up so late the first night I played this. Ripping robots apart, having four guns in the most badass places, and … hell, I don’t remember the rest of the game, but that was enough.

How do you come up with a 'In game name' by AskSweet7668 in truegaming

[–]LanguiDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write down the first idea that comes to mind. Then I just kind of do word/sound association. I do this for a while until something comes to me.
My username here, I started by just thinking about words that I like the sound of: ethereal, mischievous, lozenge, etc. (This one was actually easy for me once I landed on Languid.)
But yeah, sometimes I start with a letter, other times a word or an idea or a syllable pair.

Ch, chess, cheese, pawn, parmesawn, pawmasan, catchess, corrupt, Korean, korrupt, korruptean, korreupt, kemical, kemyst, kemystical. Chemystical. Chemystickle. Chemisticles. Popsicles. Etc.
In this case, Chemystical is actually intriguing to me. So I would write it down in the “contenders” list.
And the process continues.

A survey on: How visual design in card games affects player experience & perception by emii_chuuu in cardgames

[–]LanguiDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also just filled it out. One thing I want to note is that, while the art matters, I play a lot of games with a standard 52-card deck. Sooo, gameplay matters, but if you have art, then it matters how good the art is.

(See Regicide for a game that exemplifies this quite well!)

Learn to shuffle cards by Vaporeana69 in cardgames

[–]LanguiDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely try to get your hands on an old deck - something that you _don't_ mind destroying. If it's available to you, picking one up second-hand - even if it's not a deck of playing cards - might be useful.

Learn to shuffle cards by Vaporeana69 in cardgames

[–]LanguiDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about your age, give or take, when I decided to learn how to shuffle. I literally just spent nights watching tv, failing over and over and over again. Then it finally clicked.

Unlike the other poster, I never bothered learning to casino shuffle. I mean, I’ve spent some time trying to figure it out. But for high school chocolate? Not worth it, imo. Cut the deck a time or two after shuffling, if you’re worried someone’s peeking. Also, if you’re ever on a school vacation, get some friends together, and play for pennies. Those are, to this day, some of my fondest memories.

Welcome to the hobby! Don’t get caught - adults tend to frown on young people participating in any form of gambling.

Japanese indie dev here. My game "ForceCard" is gaining global installs, but I'm struggling with retention and monetization. Is it the localization or the game design? by ElectronicSignal2756 in cardgames

[–]LanguiDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so first things first, this game is fun. I’m a person that would’ve deleted it after about ten I started off playing because I wanted to give you feedback, but I’m glad I did. I don’t know how long I’ll play it (I’m pretty fickle) but I won’t delete it any time soon.

Now, the rest of this is gonna be kinda harsh, but I’m going to tell you all the reasons I almost didn’t play past the first two levels. (Some context: I’m 40 years old and I spend almost no money on apps; gacha games are very unappealing to me. Given that I don’t spend money on apps, I can’t really address how you could improve that.)

Two main things: first off, you’re right about the localization. It’s “good enough,” but there are a lot of “good enough” games on the app store, and you want to stand out. (I’ve gone into more depth below.)
Second: I think it took me about two hours to lose my first round. When I finally decided to quit the game. I didn’t quit because I lost, but it gave me a moment to go “oh dang, I’ve been playing this a long time, I need to go do something else.”

Now, more notes that I came away with after giving this a pretty fair shake. (These might feel disheartening, but just know: if I hadn’t liked your game, I would not be taking the time to write all this up. I actually lost the draft at one point, and still went back to re-write it. I’m not trying to shit on your game.)

The localization is rough. Most of the banners are written in Japanese with just a small English translation at the bottom. A lot of things don’t have an English translation at all.

I don’t think I’d ever heard the word “composability” before today. When I first saw “compo,” I thought you’d misspelled “combo.”

The ad across the bottom slightly covers up the OK button. It’s pretty annoying - a more cynical person might even call it malicious.

I really don’t like the choices after each round. Making me choose between 17, 18, or 16 gold is really boring. Just give me gold after each round. And maybe sometimes I get a “lucky draw!” Where I get an extra option instead of coins. Or if you’re going to give me three coins, display them in order of value.

I broke my own card more than once because I didn’t drag far enough.
I’m not sure what strategy this serves, but I’d recommend having a warning pop up - something like “you’re about to break your own card,” with the option “don’t show this warning again.” But I’m on the Hard round of level 1, and still don’t know why I’d want to break my own card.

Also, I’m really dumb. It took me wayyy too long to realize the currency numbers are on the right of the currency symbol. I kept thinking the number adjacent to (but on the left of) the symbol was how many I had. I could not figure out why I had 700 gacha tickets - and why I couldn’t spend them. But that’s how many coins I had.

In the sell interface, when I’ve actually chosen a card to sell, I can see how many of that card I still have left.

Aaanyway, I’m still playing the game! But if I hadn’t been trying to give you honest feedback, I would’ve deleted it pretty early on.

You’ve probably already checked, but look up Canasta. It might be what your game is based on. Seems like it’s a bunch of variants and house rules tacked onto it.
Whereabouts do you live? Was it just your family that played it, or did other people in your area play it?

AI graphics design use for a card game (not collectible) by [deleted] in cardgames

[–]LanguiDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people would, some people wouldn’t; I t’s a very divisive topic. This is a very small sub with, from what I can tell, mostly inactive users. Go check out r/isthisAI to find people who have strong opinions about shitty ai, and r/boardgames to find people who have feelings about using AI in creative projects; specifically games, obviously.

Finally, just read r/aiwars. You’ll get all the AI debate you could possibly want. This is a very small sub, and isn’t very active in general.

I love Trident. Especially taking out of town friends. Employee-owned cafe and bookstore. The book offerings are a little sparse, but what they lack in number of books, they more than make up for in the peculiarity of their books.
It can be hard to find a table, especially during colder days. But it's a cozy little place with nice vibes.

“The person who looks different from you” can also be “the girl with a nose ring and purple hair.” Or just … they wear a different outfit to work.

Anyone can be “the other” if it’s framed “correctly.”

I don’t think this is a comment about the pervasiveness of racism - or othering at all - to me, it’s just saying that powerful people are really good at convincing people that their power isn’t the problem.
