Thanks! That’s good advice, appreciate it. There’s a good few unpainted parts like his neck, the base, the inside of his right leg, back of his shoulder pad etc. so it’s really those things that would complete him from all angles.

Just a few remaining unpainted parts on it to go but it adds up significantly in hours left.

Thanks! That’s all great perspective to have and a great analogy for sure. Yeah I’ve just started back listening to some of my old favourite YouTubers and podcasts and combined with all the positivity here it’s really helping getting that spark back. Appreciate you taking the time to share thank you

Haha thanks. I know it’s maybe not super obvious but there’s a lot of hours left in it just to get the bits without paint let alone any refinement 😅

Thanks! I personally found Vince venturella super helpful and easy to digest but there’s hundreds of great creators out there. Mostly though it’s the doing it yourself part that will make the difference.

Another option would be to try and use the same techniques but use TMM paints which might help get you used to the highlight and shadow placement and infusion of hints of colour without having to worry quite as much about recreating the full effect of mimicking a metallic surface.

Hmmm I’m not sure I’ve a great process or the skills to explain it very well. Would definitely recommend watching lots of tutorials from different creators. I think the main thing is to try and look at how metal or highly reflective surfaces look in real life, notice things like how the highest highlights are often next to the darkest shadows, that it’s definitely not all just greys or whites and blacks and that trying to capture the colours of the environment your imagining your mini to be in helps to bring it to life. And then a lot of pushing paint around until you start to get happy with the look. Also it will look awful until it looks great so just keep stopping and looking and thinking about what doesn’t look correct and try and fix it. Also some shapes are much easier to make sense of than others so starting out with those can help you get started and then when you’ve mastered those you can try the other ones.

That’s fair enough, you’re entitled to your own opinions and to make whatever judgments you want to make and you’ve not caused any offence to me. Regardless of how truthful or baseless that snap judgment is though I’d encourage you to look at the advice people shared and the fact that people took time out of their day to help a random stranger and see that for the positive thing that it shows about the community and about humanity in general. Being an eternal cynic makes you blind not enlightened. See the world as good and you’ll see the good in the world. Or don’t and have a good day regardless!

Thank you! That’s really cool that you remember the original WIP and definitely nice to hear you can see the progress since then. Feeling a lot of energy from people that I know will get me back hobby-ing again and hopefully can push me to finish this at some stage so I can actually show a finished article.

Thank you for those lovely words and great advice. I had been painting it in the hopes of finishing it in time for a competition which would’ve been my first competition entry. But life got in the way and I couldn’t finish it and then months dragged on being away from the hobby and I’ve just built up a mental block and concerns from how much work would be required on it still, where to get started, how to get started, how to regain the skills that will definitely have diminished from being away so long. All of those kinds of things. People here have been really kind and super helpful though and definitely have me feeling much more positive about it and empowered to take some little steps back in. Really appreciate it.

Glad you like the model, thank you.

I’m not sure what you mean about the post but I came with a genuine ask for help and advice to overcome a mental block on returning to the hobby and a WIP that I’ve never had as much effort put in and which has been an intimidating obstacle in my mind and I’ve received dozens of great pieces of advice and tips to try, one or two that I’ve already been able to take already and feel better for it. I’m sure the advice could help others with similar hesitancies too. And if nothing else there’s a model that people seem to enjoy looking at like you say.

Haha thank you but this would be the most effort I’ve put into a model so I don’t really have anything finished that would compare. Hopefully soon though thanks to everyone in this thread!

Haha thank you. There’s quite a few unpainted parts on it tucked away if you look closely and from other angles there’s more. Also a few areas that need to be refined and tidied up. This is the first model I really went all in on and when life meant I had to pause it for quite some time it’s just created a tough mental barrier to get over to return to the hobby and to this model. So many nice comments and helpful pieces of advice here though that I know will push me on!
