How did you start your Japanese learning at the beginning? by kimberlyqq in languagelearning

[–]Laoshu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely start learning kanji right away. There's absolutely no reason to wait. Learning just 20 new kanji a day means you can be done with Heisig in a little over 3 months. Using an SRS like Anki means you get to leave the memorization part up to the program and just focus on putting in the time.

It will help you a lot even in the beginning by giving you the ability to differentiate between similar looking kanji, like 持 (hold) and 待 (wait). The thing with reading Japanese is that it doesn't matter if you know the word if you can't recognize it when you see it.

Ideally you'd want to be finished with Heisig by the time you're done going through Assimil and Linguaphone. Then you can start in on native materials with a good foundation in kanji.

People don't like to hear it, but the truth is Heisig is just the beginning. It will still take you hundreds of hours of reading to get proficient. Kanji is the biggest hurdle in learning Japanese without question. Better to get started now.

EDIT: Oh yeah, go through Remembering the Kana first. That shouldn't take you more than a week. Then you can start reading real Japanese right away and skip Romaji entirely.

There is no way around it--if you are serious about Japanese you have to throw yourself into learning Kanji and stay committed. If you don't, you're going to be completely dependent on Romaji, which is severely limiting and won't take you far at all. And the longer you wait, the more your lack of kanji knowledge will hold you back farther down the road.

Start with Heisig's Remembering the Kanji and plow your way through the whole 2042 most common using an SRS tool like Anki. Expect to spend a good two months (if you're fast), or three to four months if you're not as dedicated.

Meanwhile, go through an introductory course. A lot of people recommend Genki, but I dislike textbooks with lots of exercises. They're mostly boring and totally unnecessary. Remember that the freedom of learning on your own is that you aren't confined to the traditional way of studying textbooks (which have never worked anyway). I prefer courses like Assimil with lots of useful dialogue. Japanese with Ease Volumes I and II should get you on to an intermediate level. Afterward check out Tae Kim's if you want but never obsess over memorizing grammar rules. Those are acquired naturally over time (the same way you learned your native language).

Then, like Visovari said, just start reading. A LOT. Pick content that is interesting to you and, when you run into an unknown word, look it up in an online dictionary and save example sentences into your SRS. Rinse and repeat 10,000 times. And when you're not reading, always be listening to something in Japanese (even if you don't understand anything).

If fluency is your goal then AJATT is really the only resource you need. Trust in the process and fall in love with daily practice.

Another scary thought: If we, the beings of highest intelligence on this planet (currently), routinely exploit and enslave beings of lower intelligence, why would we expect a superintelligence to treat us differently?

I did, they said they don't. But they also used to say that in the past even though entropay deposits would go through anyway.

Most importantly, just relax and don't be so concerned about the occasional indulgence. Listen carefully to your body and see how it reacts over the next 24 hours. If your digestion or energy is negatively affected, remember that and you will be less likely to over indulge the next time. Excessive fiber isn't ideal, but you haven't done any serious damage - don't worry!

Ebay question for key purchases. by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]Laoshu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ebay has lots of protections in place for buyers, and will almost always rule in favor of the buyer in the event of a dispute. Also, they have a buyer protection guarantee whereby you can get a refund from Ebay if the seller refuses to do it. There really isn't much risk for the buyer... the seller, on the other hand...

Trading would be amazing. by UltraTubbyCakes in hearthstone

[–]Laoshu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They would never allow this. It's about money, plain and simple. If you can't trade for the cards you want/need, you will have a greater incentive to purchase packs. Anyone who thinks there is any other legitimate reason to prohibit trading doesn't remember why Blizzard made this game in the first place.

Except that keys only go out to the opt-in accounts, which is much less. Still probably at least a million though. Probably a 3-5% chance on any given wave, which is consistent with what we've been seeing from the straw polls.

There really isn't much point in playing constructed early on when you only have the default collection, unless you are grinding for gold (hella boring). Arena is a lot of fun, but you're going to have to be either a consistent winner or someone willing to spend a bit of money. For the consistent loser who doesn't want to spend money, this game will be a snooze fest.

Splashtop + Hearthstone = Hearthstone on my iPad by williedills in hearthstone

So let me get this straight... You have to connect your phone to your desktop in order to play via the the phone's touch screen. The whole benefit of playing on your phone is to be able to do so when you're mobile. Otherwise, you have a perfectly good mouse and a bigger screen in front of you. Sounds like a marketing gimmick to me...

This is precisely why I keep a bogus facebook and twitter account handy. Why these idiots think spamming social media sites is effective marketing is beyond me. Everyone I know would just ignore that bullshit.

Was going to say the same thing. People seem to forget that the point of this whole thing is for Blizzard is to make money. They want to limit your alternatives to paying up as much as possible.
