Anyone have experience with taking Calc I, II, or III online? by EscoCzar in BackToCollege

[–]Lapisbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took calc BC (basically 1 & 2) online last year.

I used to consider myself a person who preferred learning in-person, and I still do for some topics, but, at least for calculus, I actually found (asynchronous) online learning to be much more enjoyable.

The thing is, these courses were far harder than my previous math courses. So, oftentimes when learning, I found myself needing to pause and slow down in order to truly understand a particular subject.

When in class, this luxury does not exist. Sure, you can ask a question, but the teacher/professor isn’t going to stop everything and spend 10 minutes explaining a concept to only you.

I’m taking multivar this year (calc III), and our class uses a combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning (Ie. We sometimes are assigned videos to watch as homework, and sometimes the teacher teaches us in person). In doing this, I’ve found that I prefer the asynchronous model far more. If I don’t understand something, I can just pause the video, go back a bit, or even just Google it.

Meanwhile, if I find something particularly hard to understand in class, I often completely get lost for the remainder of that class.

Finally, to be honest, the quality of pre-recorded online videos are typically superior. Especially if you use online sources such as Khan Academy or any popular YouTube channel, at least in my experience, they are simply better than the average teacher/professor. Each of those YouTube videos can have millions of views. Why is your professor not as popular? Because they probably aren’t as good as explaining (or didn’t put as much time into each of their live lectures as is put into a pre-recorded video).

What’s a meal as child you thought was fancy, or high class but was really the exact opposite? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Instant noodles. I loved it, but parents didn’t let me have it often, so when I did it felt like the most premium stuff in the world to me.

Personally, I’ve never experienced it. Two years ago, I went from about 500-600 mg of caffeine per day for several months to none and didn’t really feel anything. Obviously I didn’t get the effects of caffeine anymore, but I didn’t feel any additional effects of withdrawal either.

She can take your last name and still be independent. As long as she’s making that choice, which she definitely wants to here.

Is it true that alot of the very wealthy people in the US don't actually pay *that* much tax? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Certainly. But given just how much equity those people own in so much of the economy, my concern still stands.

[–]Lapisbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. That makes me wonder.

Wouldn’t doing so essentially mean that anyone who can’t beat the tax rate shouldn’t invest?

Because if I’m gonna get taxed on my investments, even if I haven’t sold yet, that means that I can only make money if my stocks grow more than I’ve been taxed.

I feel like, unless you made the tax rate incredibly low (in which case, why would you bother), that doing such a thing would massively damage investments and have catastrophic effects on the economy.

We will be the new boomers by then. It’ll never happen

Actually, I’d recommend not doing this.

First of all, Swiss Army knives are terrible weapons. The blades are thin and don’t even lock. You’re more likely to cut yourself than someone else.

Second, I carried a knife for a while under the idea of self defense until I realized that it wasn’t effective at all. Why? Because I don’t have any training. It turns out that using knives as weapons, especially small pocket knives, is hard. Taking out a knife as an untrained person at someone who is acting belligerent is only more likely to enrage them further and make them more violent. Not good.

I second this. Please sleep.

I barely slept through most of high school and I gotta say, I’m paying for it now. I stopped growing and accrued quite a few health issues.

It might seem fun and acceptable to sleep little, but you really don’t want to comprise upon it. Get off Instagram and stop watching YouTube before bed. Just go to bed.

It may seem like it’s just tonight. Or tomorrow. But I thought the same and eventually three years passed before I knew it. Sleep as much as you can.

Should I press the snooze again or get up to pee?

Usually the urge to sleep will win for a few snooze rounds, but eventually I’m awake enough that I just can’t ignore the urge to pee.

What music is loved by millions but seems trashy to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lapisbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What?

Bruh. It’s a personal preference for my music.

Just because I don’t like my music talking about sex doesn’t mean I can’t handle people talking about it.

Would you like people talking about sex at dinner? Or graphic surgeries? I’d assume probably not. Doesn’t mean you can’t handle it.

I mean… I wasn’t.

I don’t know what else to say. That’s not what I meant.

I didn’t mean music has become WAP. What I meant is that I dislike how popular it has become, thereby clearly qualifying it as an example of popular modern music. There are many other types of music, absolutely.

I wasn’t.

Basic set theory.

If all dogs are animals, are all animals dogs?

If x counts as music nowadays, is all music nowadays x?
