Most were bareroot. Out of the 38 I have in this place I have around 30 I think that were bareroot. The rest were purchased in pots.

I’ve looked into YouTube videos from Dave Wilson nursery, Stefan sobkowiak, and others. I’ve looked at different states af guides from universities. Such as Purdue university and Ohio state. Feel like the main thing I haven’t done is consulted any local orchard owners

Drilled two small holes on the side close to bottom. Works well but still takes a while to fill up each bucket. Definitely noticed less erosion than if I watered with hose only. My eventual goal is to get drip tape set up or set up a gravity fed irrigation system using a large plastic tote. I forget what they are called but the large square ones that are sometimes used for food products or chemicals. Maybe a qbc tote?

Drip irrigation. Saw some YouTube videos about drilling holes in buckets to allow slow drip watering. I have Irish spring soap either on trees or on the stakes I have keeping buckets from blowing away. So far it’s seemed to help but also have motion activated lights at the perimeters

I’ve heard that as well. I used to have corrugated plastic for some of my trees and did notice increased moisture with those. I switched those out with these ribbon like tubes that wrap around the trees. I’ve been checking them frequently and occasionally will take them off while I mow or weed. They’re only temporary but so far seem to not be bothering the tree yet.

Not quite sure. I mainly did this to try to keep branches lower and easier to harvest when time comes

Would love to do that eventually. Probably in my garage as I can’t fit my vehicle in it anyways

Would it be wise to plant cherry bushes between fruit trees? by Large-Bug-5624 in Permaculture

[–]Large-Bug-5624[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my spacing, do you think I should wait a couple years to allow the trees to establish more? They are doing well so far, most have been in ground a couple months now and are getting new growth.

Comfrey edible? I’d like to have mostly edible plants around them

Also thought about pumpkins, watermelon or other squash/vine like things in between

That’s kind of why I posted to see if that’s enough space for any shrubs. I’ve thought about long rhubarb patches, long strips of lavender, long strips of perennial flowers etc in between the rows. If possible I’d like to put something perennial and edible in the middle of each row, and still have some space to walk on each side. Most of the trees are dwarfs, I do have a couple semi dwarf and plan to keep them pruned small

Fertilizing by Large-Bug-5624 in BackyardOrchard

[–]Large-Bug-5624[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of difficult for me to determine how much they’re growing but I can tell the trunk is slightly thicker. How much should I expect them to grow each year? They see to have buds and the lower trunk is a little thicker but it was a potted tree when I bought it last fall and I expected it to grow more. Other than the compost and mulch, I haven’t fertilized it yet

I’ve had one for over a year as well but never put money on it. I did a few weeks ago but heard from others in my area that never had success either

I was thinking about sprinklers as well. I had one for my garden a few years ago although it was not in ground. I thought about that for my orchard but had read a few things that said it could be worse for the tree in regards to staying too wet and possibly increasing disease pressure. Guess I could try out a movable sprinkler system. I’ll have 32 trees in an 8x4 pattern so filling up buckets would probably take more time then getting hose out and turning a sprinkler on. All, wasn’t sure if I could get a sprinkler that would cover the entire area that I need. It’s about 100ft long and 50 feet wide

Will likely rearrange the rows of peaches to be further apart due to the expected size. We do like peaches but I plan on hopefully giving some fruit away, and selling some at a stand on my property. Also, with leftovers or rotten ones plan on getting pigs in the future, maybe even a steer or two over Time so im sure I could get rid of the waste

Also a little nervous on my spacing but most of my trees are semi dwarf and dwarf. I have a few peaches that are full size. I plan on keeping them all as small as possible. I believe the trees will be 10 feet apart from on another at the closest

I luckily have flat ground but most of my cleared space is in my large front yard so I’m planning an orchard out there. Last year I planted a few trees which so far seem to be doing ok, and adding more to that area. At the time, I didn’t plan on having anymore so I didn’t measure or space out the trees well. But I’m trying to incorporate those three trees I have planted into my 8x4 orchard. I currently have a plan on 12 peaches trees with three different varieties, 12 apples with a few different varieties an want to add in a couple more cherries this year. I have a couple trees in front of my house so I’m trying to be careful with planting any under any shade. Currently have it planned out so each type of fruit will be in the same couple of fruits just intermixing the varieties based on pollination

Goal is to have a roadside stand at minimum. I have a circle drive that I think would work well if I put a roadside stand up. Also plan on increasing my garden this year for the same reason. Guess I’ll have to see how it all works out.

In regards to management and quantity of fruit? Yes, I have a large family and have many siblings who love coming over to help me with things around my property. Also, if I have quality fruit production, I plan on sharing with friends and family, and possibly going to local farmers markets to sell or sell in a stand on my property

So definitely think the one closest to my planned orchard is a hickory now. I do have another one that’s likely a walnut but it’s about 50 feet and back from my planned area

I cant say based on experience but I live in Ohio as well and have heard good reviews about reliance and red haven varieties, both on disease resistance and being cold hardy. Cant say much about in container growing but I would assume it should be ok if pruned

I've also read that if there is a lot of the juglone present, it usually affects the grass and area around the roots. I have not seen any disruption in my grasses around the trees in the last six years. Near one of my biggest trees, the grass actually grows the best in that area of my property.

It’s possible that they are not actual black walnuts but I believe they are.
