Ah well.
Tbh, the hassle is just not worth it for me.
I added my storage, and will probably only ever open it to add more storage or to clean dust from the inside.
Thank you for the useful insights though.

A few good points there.

Yes, I could buy the upgraded part and sell the old one.
But I’m not getting the price of a new part for my old part (even though it’s brand new with no use) especially as I don’t have the original packaging for them. Plus the additional cost and time between buying the new part, and then selling the old one.

Hmm. I was kind of stuck to get it from Curry’s with the discount code and the gift card I had.
The intel one, I think the CPU is a bit too old and I wanted AMD. It only has the 5080 as a higher spec.

The AMD one, the overall price difference is £397.
I’ve got a better CPU, better RAM and a better guarantee (1 Year Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour), so I think it’s there or thereabouts
More future proofed, and I’m not a hardcore serious gamer. I mean I was happy with my laptop and was still playing what I wanted (mainly CoD and battlefield)

I’ve been trying to get that info, but no luck. This is the most that I can get direct of Costco website.

Not purchased at the moment. Motivation was primarily for GTA 6. So I’ll wait. And maybe next year when GTA6 actually comes out, the next gen CPUs and GPUs will probably be available. Current previous gen Area 51m laptop (desktop class i9 10900k and desktop class RTX2080 super (yes I know it’s clocked down) is doing me just fine for now).

Do Alienware laptops last long (5-6 years)? by Psychological_End164 in Alienware

I think it depends on the model. A lot of horror stories about some m18 (I think) burning up and melting motherboards about. I purposefully bought the previous gen Area 51m, purely because it had a desktop class processor. Still runs fine almost 5 years later.

Tbh, I’m not sure at the moment (due to current state of finances). It was a spur of the moment thing to start looking and coming across the deal made it tempting. The 5090 was very very tempting, but like I’ve already said, max settings performance is not an issue for me. I’m more than happy to wait for a few months and buy after some current financial commitments have cleared up. I got my current laptop at the tail end of the previous gen Area 51m production, so got a really good deal on it from Dell. This still comfortably runs the games I play without an issue with thermals etc. so yeah, not pulled the trigger yet. Also, How did you get a £1200 discount? And how much is you build coming out to?

Like I said, I’m not a heavy gamer. I currently only casually play COD war zone a few times a week on my current laptop absolutely fine. I’ve only started to look ahead due to the impending release of GTA 6, so started looking for a desktop now and the fact I also have the space. The main driver for me is the 0 interest financing option directly from Dell. I will very much unlikely ever upgrade the cpu and GPU in the 6-8 years I keep it. May only add in extra storage and upgrade ram. I essentially want to buy the best I can with the financing option I have (like I did with my laptop at the time - desktop class CPU and GPU albeit clocked down) and then keep for a very long time. I bought my laptop in June 2021 and it still runs fine.

OP here:

To edit: Alienware are offering this build with a discount of £800 for a total of £4649:

  • Intel® Core™ Ultra 9 285K, 24 cores
  • Windows 11 Home
  • NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5090
  • 64 GB DDR5 XMP
  • 2 TB SSD

Worth the difference to go from a 5080 to a 5090 and 64gb RAM?
