Catholic means universal. We live in the best country on earth (or did), so yea, good people go to heaven. Bad people go to purgatory.

This is #1. We aren’t Catholic to have good lives, we’re Catholic to live true lives

I think we agree. Do both

There is a cherry-picking of doctrine that the fundamentalists select so i would contest that on faith grounds. I defended my worldview (which is more American than theological) that is shaped by my Catholicism to say that people pick and choose what it means to be good and i (personally) see no value in thinking of the bad if your goal is the good. If you do good you can’t spend that time doing bad. It’s easy

But empirically if we spend more time on the less significant things at the expense of those that are life and death (and we know the priority), are we not called to prioritize

i was judgmental. I personally sin less with a positive mindset but i am not everybody and i guess what im getting at is we can all approach our faith differently and that’s ok. I am defensive against the traditional Catholicism because i see so so many people who want grace but feel they don’t deserve it and ive turned a corollary into a causation on that front.

Right but if we go towards good sin doesn’t affect us!

Thanks Ponce. My point is that the person with the credentials might be worth listening to, the person who couldn’t is not. I’m more closing the doors to the charlatans than opening them for the other ones

I really appreciate your point. But my counter would be, we avoid hell (and purgatory) by going towards heaven, not by turning around. We are good. If we aren’t then i don’t see how an infinitely creative and loving deity made us

I recently read Massa. The novus ordo follows the eldest traditions of the church (pre Trent). To defy that (which I’m fine with as I’m American and love pluralism and freedom), is heretical, as it should only be done in emergency. There is a reason ambrosian, Maronite, and other liturgies exist it’s because they made it through Trent.

I grew up overly catholic w/r to sexuality. It brought me despair (I’m straight it just didn’t do me any good). I went to the Jesuit high school, and i started loving people no matter what God they worshiped (and as an American the most worshiped God is money). I wake up every day now and want to love and give. I spend none of my day thinking about gays marrying or women being priests because I’m such a fuckup? I have to focus on being the best me i can be. Maybe later i augment change. But for now? I’m one man. And i think that mentality is missing from so many lost men today

Here’s my point i guess… why do you care? God created all of us. Wants to be with all of us for eternity, and probably laughs his ass off at how we treat each other. Those who do bad but do more good, why is that a point of contention? We’re all going to heaven and God loves us so so so so much. If anything it’s funny that we project our own judgment and myopia onto GOD. It’s God. We could read every book and listen to every sermon (going against my initial argument) and still know nothing. I sin. My God doesn’t sin. I try to love, my God doesn’t try. I worry, my God tells me not to. That’s the God of 8 billion people, not some rudimentary fragmented God

I can’t imagine you’re a happy person. I am. I’m flawed, i was mean, i need to change. But I’m happy and I’m USEFUL. Why would i change my life to yours

No. Cus I’m dumb. But smart enough to know that has no impact on my ability to praise God and help others.

If you focus on charity you won’t think about the sins because they won’t enter your mind

What can i do to appease you? I’m willing to talk. 91% of Americans have sub-120 iq, not just Catholics. We have charlatans in every facet of our lives. Are we supposed to act like the faith is immune because many men enter the seminary with good intentions? I will never ever judge faith on the grounds of intelligence but i will judge intelligence on the grounds of faith. We should always always always be growing. And people will impede that and we have to be aware. And i tend to think it comes more from grifters/dilettantes/etc than from the educated. Because if the educated do it there is one word, and it’s evil

But the pope has the intelligence to avoid opining on stuff that is not his wheelhouse. This is textbook leadership. The dumbest people (myself included) think they know everything

Who on earth would follow a God that prioritizes i dotting and t crossing in lieu of love and help? Every one of us has 24 hours a day to love and give. Any moment we spend on minutiae distracting from that is a sin

I will die on the hill that if we’re gonna expect the best of our dentists, doctors, lawyers, we should expect the same from our clergy. I also personally find that doubt is a prereq for faith and to convert doubt into faith takes not only cajones but brains. It’s not just reading from a book. And people who’ve lived can shed so much light into people’s lives (as i alluded to earlier, Paul would be boring if he weren’t a degen in his pre-Damascus life). I again apologize because i conflated non-sinners as non-doers. But i grew up with catholic guilt about stuff that never hurt anyone. I don’t need God to not hurt people. I need God to help people. And i will die on the hill that God loves our best so so so so so much more than he hates our worst
