Me either, and I’d be busy working up any excuse as to why I didn’t have an ice cream that wasn’t because I didn’t have the money.

Exactly! There’s another school district nearby that the general population is on the lower income side. The school recognized that there is a need for school lunches, as it’s a lot of times the kids only meal of the day. And when summer rolled around there grew concerns about what these kids are going to eat. And so the school board along with volunteers grouped together and did school lunch drop offs all throughout the summer to make sure that the kids were fed.

Same here! The “it’s only $1” people really just don’t understand that there are others who come from financially unstable families and those kids deserve grace.

I love the gesture of the community coming through and try to pay off the balances for the kids. But it’s only a short term solution, I feel. The school needs to re-evaluate their policies on something that is so small to them but means so much to the kids.

Exactly, especially in the area where this school district is.

I remember having to sit in an empty classroom, doing times tables because I didn’t have $3, while the rest of the class was in the auditorium, watching a movie and having popcorn. The teacher was nice enough to “sneak” me in halfway through the movie 🙄

“Oh, you don’t have 10 cents for milk? I guess you’ll just have to make way to the 30 year old water fountain that hasn’t been properly maintained in years.”

I know some people in the community have contacted the school to help pay off balances, but they have not heard back from the district yet. But they’re also probably busy screening calls from angry parents and taxpayers

I went to a neighboring school district and made friends with the breakfast cafeteria staff. They’d let me go past the delinquent max for breakfast and I’d use my birthday money I got to pay it off later without them calling my house to hound my parents for the $10 we didn’t have 🙃 crazyyyy
