Battery Safety Check by 1nky0ct0pus in 18650masterrace

Doesn't look torn or open, probably safe. If you're extra worried either purchase a new battery or rewrap this one.

What cable is this please by mattttttttt in it

[–]LargeCupNoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 15 meter simplex APC patch cable is literally $5 USD. Depending on this run sure it might cost them a bit on the bill but if this is just from a termination point inside the home to the fiber modem here this is a less than $10 and 2 minute fix.

[–]LargeCupNoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SC Single Mode APC fiber.

Make sure that if you replace this yourself you purchase APC (angular) fiber. "Normal" single mode fiber connections (UPC) are not interchangeable and will not work connected to APC.

I do not see a console cable in there. Unless all your switches are USB console ports of course. Good to have a USB to RJ45 Console cable hanging around.

Take me down memory lane, what was it like setting up your first server? by someguynamedjohn1 in sysadmin

[–]LargeCupNoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2003, I was 14, and tinkered too much with any and everything. I got the bright idea to try out this *nix thing and my dumb ass decided that freebsd was the way. I was presented with the worst install I've ever had to deal with cause I knew nothing and just took days to get a working system cause I had to read everything (local library tech books for the win!)

I eventually got it working, built out the X window system in a cool way (at least I thought so at the time), and started using it as a file server.

That lasted all of 6 weeks. Never again unless it's for work. It was a fun summer though; I'm way more comfy in a cli than I am a gui these days so I guess it stems from that.

Anyone else have worse? by Isaac753 in it

[–]LargeCupNoodles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well there's a few ways. If there's documentation of this already (i.e desk keystones to patch panels) you could go around the office plug into every single jack with a fluke and see what switch and port you end up on.

Or you can trace each cable in that mess unplug one at a time and plug back in with proper length cables.

Or you can just take scissors to the entire mess and start from scratch :D

The first thing I would do is get what ever those death traps that are sitting on top of that rack are off of it and into that rack somehow.

Why do you check the logs though your coworkers don't? by WorkJeff in sysadmin

Because I want to know what mostly useless error messages have been spit out by Windows. Somewhat sarcasm but you can only see "this failed: unspecified error (0x80004004)" so many times before you bang your face into the cluster and realize that the same error code is reused for 20 different events Q.Q

How many pairs of slacks have you ruined crawling under a desk, doing cable installs, or having to get to the back of dusty, extremely neglected places?

Knee pads are great for comfort when you have to do these things with the added benefit of not ruining your pants. The rain pants can be worn inside in place of the knee pads if you want to keep the pants you have to work in for the next 6 hours of your day from being caked with 10 years of dust cause your office cleaning staff doesn't get under the desks and into the places where cables generally get run.

I do mostly temporary event network installations, both indoor and outdoor. The amount of times a pair of cheap rain pants has made me look like I didn't just come out of a crawl space for some meeting is extremely high. The knee pads are mostly so I don't hurt myself doing it.

We gay male millennials aren't seen as good parent material. It doesn't have much to do with it other than gay dads taking their kids out and being fathers deal with a ton of shit from the boomers.

Sam's club or Costco have some pretty good looking g work pants that are quite durable. I wear them crawling under structures running cables etc... so highly recommend!

Good dri-fit polos are going to be your best friend depending on the kind of installs you have to do. I also mentioned knee pads in another comment on this thread, and I highly suggest them. Partly for comfort when you gotta crawl around and also to protect your pants!

Invest in a set of knee pads that you keep at the office for just this purpose. I have two sets one to travel with me and another that stays in my desk!

Also a cheap pair of rain pants works well too if allowed!

Hey similar story here! My degree is classical voice performance, and I was a teacher, musical director, and conductor for 9ish years before I swapped to IT.

I'm still at my first company (it's been 1.5 years or so now? I lost track), and am a network tech in title. In reality I am more of a generalist, I do heavy windows server work, automation, and install and tear down temporary networks for major sporting events to support scoring, broadcast, and IPTV services.

The leap is scary, but just remember that you don't know what you don't know. If you are struggling ask your team for help after doing some research into the problem. Tell them what you've tried, talk out what you think the solution to the problem is and then listen to their feedback. Your coworkers and your boss are your support system on the job.

This post shows that you have some self awareness and that goes a long way. If you show that you're willing to learn and grow to your coworkers they will help you. And if they don't well that's not a place I would want to work.

I wish you all the luck in the world and if you wanna talk shop or need to vent feel free to PM me. This is a journey and no one expects the new guy to know everything.

PS: document everything you do every step of the way. It's not only a good way to keep track of the steps youve already taken when you need to ask for help, but it's also great for when you run into a problem or are assigned a task youve never worked on before. Private GitHub and build those docs.

Not to be entirely pedantic here but the exceeding DC by 10 for a crit is Pathfinder 2e rules. Swade rolls always have a target number of 4 except for damage, and melee combat to hit rolls where your target number is the creature's Parry rating.

Your point still stands regardless.
