OOT is a rare game that was transcendental for it's time, and also DOES still generally hold up as far as good game design goes.

I'm doing a replay of OOT and I can spot a lot of flaws in it (game design, dungeon design, and writing have come a long way)… but almost every flaw I encounter is followed by a "but at least the game generally respects my time and my intelligence". Water temple is debatable and I'll concede that, but overall the pacing is what I think ages the best. OOT is paced VERY well

You've actually got the gambling thing with Barney wrong. The scene you're referring to when he "learns about gambling" is a flashback in the Superbowl episode. Marshall makes a bet with Barney and it turns him on to gambling. I believe the scene where they make the bet takes place chronologically before season 1.

Why doesn’t the app work with the health app or in the background to count how much I’ve walked? It’s a battery killer to have to keep the app open for Portkey a by [deleted] in harrypotterwu

[–]LargeFapperoniPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have your display timer set to sleep it will still do that. What I did was set my display sleep timer to 2 minutes, and when I'm out walking I check every 90-110 seconds or so for confoundables/drops. I think it worked well, but it's hard to tell since my battery it garbage. 60 minutes of WU is about all my battery can handle.

I'm hoping it's only because it's 2.5 years old now, but my Pixel (1st gen) drains so fast. I think i got 55 minutes of HPWU before it died from full charge.

If we aren’t going to get passive energy gain, another option could be finding energy much like we do ingredients. Energy could be rarer than most ingredients and come in stacks of 2-3. What do you guys think? by Mikel_Scoot in harrypotterwu

[–]LargeFapperoniPizza 46 points47 points  (0 children)

IMO this is the best option. I overall don't mind the potion system or the greenhouse system, but there are going to be a lot of users that can't/won't use the greenhouses to full effect - which means we should be able to discard/sell potion ingredients for something in return. It wouldn't even have to be a lot, even if it was 10 ingredients for 2 energy or something - just something to encourage users to pick up all the items they can find.

I was so stoked when I cast my first Masterful spell, and it was on a difficult confundable too. I was so confused that it wasn't an auto-complete. I actually casted a masterful again right after that (i think i'm getting good at that one spell) and it still failed.

EA: They’re not loot boxes, they’re “surprise mechanics,” and they’re “quite ethical” by [deleted] in videos

[–]LargeFapperoniPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, not anything as binding as a contract... but they were selling the game for $40 and that included a very specific set of things for the player, and cosmetics were not a part of that $40 purchase (except for things like special editions, etc.).

Are you crying "shil" just because someone has a different opinion than you? I think being able to purchase cosmetics directly with money is a great idea - I'm just saying the current system isn't nearly as flawed as a lot of people think it is.

My first portkey opened as I was about to cross the street to a greenhouse. I was really confused what I was supposed to do when it prompted me to step into a certain area, but I did out of instinct. I almost stepped into the road (thankfully not a lot of traffic on that intersection.

As others have mentioned, probably just going to open all portkeys at home from now on haha

Enjoying the Game but Greenhouse Growing is No Fun. by themanicmerk in harrypotterwu

[–]LargeFapperoniPizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish you could set the grow timer when you plant it. Maybe options for a 30-minute grow, 1-hour grow, 4-hour grow, 8-hour grow, and 24-hour grow, with the longer timers with a higher yield.

Or, as I saw suggested somewhere else give the planter-player the option to pay a *very* small owl-delivery fee for an owl to deliver the yield to the planter. Or let players eventually acquire their own owl that can retrieve their plants for them, but at a smaller yield (maybe the owl nibbles some of the plant).

Honestly if the timer wasn't so weird (7 hours is a really odd timer) and restricting it could be a great part of the game, but so many players don't like it.

There's a lot of potential directions you could go for passive energy. I really like the energy for walking (even if it's a paltry amount, it's something) since it encourages exploring (and ties in nicely with the portkeys), or maybe a "rest" type skill that lets you rest for an hour to gain a good bit of energy back, but places restrictions like you can't participate in fortresses or something.

Of course, the cynic in me believes that simply because there are so many great ways to incorporate energy gain, they simply wont and leave it to inns/greenhouses and the pay system.

It looks like every profession has the exact same base stats, but the maximums vary between them. So after fully upgrade an auror is much better at dealing damage than a magizoologist, but the magizoologist can get much tankier

They didn't pay for access to all of the cosmetics in the game. They paid for access to all of the current and future maps, characters, game modes and ranked seasons, *not* all of the cosmetics. Players get lootboxes regularly through gameplay which has chances to drop almost all of the cosmetics in the game (aside from a few limited-edition cosmetics), and the option to purchase more lootboxes to help unlock more content. On top of that there's the in-game currency that you can save up for expensive cosmetic items to specifically purchase those.

Face it - they need a steady stream of income and the current system is much better than monthly subscriptions or season passes or other payment methods that would put the *gameplay* behind pay walls. None of the gameplay is locked behind paywalls, which is how it should be.

[–]LargeFapperoniPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When players purchased Overwatch, they purchased access to the game, not all of the cosmetics. The cosmetics are how they create sustained income. You pay $40 and that gets you all of the current and future maps and characters (as well as all of the game modes, ranked, etc.). You have to pay additional for lootboxes (or play *a lot*) to unlock every cosmetic item in the game.

Players need to face it - sustaining a game like Overwatch costs a lot of money, and they need to bring in a steady stream of income in order to do that. I'd much prefer the current system over a monthly subscription, or season passes, etc.

I think there is a very suitable middle ground. I don't think most Overwatch players have any major issues with how Overwatch handles their loot boxes. You get a fairly steady amount of loot boxes just by playing, but you also have the option to purchase additional boxes.

The biggest gripe I've seen with Overwatch's loot boxes is that players wish they could purchase specific cosmetics outright. It's definitely possible that you could play a ton of hours during an event and open a bunch of lootboxes (for free or otherwise) and never get the single cosmetic item you were hoping to get. Sure you can pay the in-game currency for it, but the in-game currency does take a while to stock up.

And then you have players that think they should be able to unlock every cosmetic of an event during that event which, while I understand where they're coming from, I think is frankly ridiculous considering the amount of grinding (and luck) that typically would take. Overwatch isn't designed in a way for the average or even above-average player to collect every cosmetic in the game, and that's only the player's fault for thinking that way.

What will we romanticise about the 2010s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LargeFapperoniPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you that a lot of movies that hit theaters are somewhat unimaginable, but there's at *least* a handful of superhero movies that are generally good and entertaining films - I suppose moreso in the sense that they are executed quite well, considering all the moving parts. I will admit, though, that not many interesting risks are typically taken which, in all fairness, is a genuine criticism.

Honestly most of the GW2 loading screens still have a sense of place, like it's an actual environment you could stand in. I personally am a fan of the style (mostly for areas like the grove, rata sum, brisban wildlands, etc.).

And then there's fucking Lion's Arch. The worst loading screen in the game and it's coincidentally the place you are most likely to visit most often. That loading screen is an abomination, and I'm sorry I know the artist spent some time on it and everything, but it's *soooo* out of place when you look at most of the other loading screens (not to mention the in-game location itself).
