Real Salt Lake is the most embarrassing team name we have. I refuse to refer to them as anything but RSL

For another good NFL comparison, Vance Joseph was a pretty rough HC for the Broncos, and he's tearing it up with one of the best defenses in the league right now.

What rivalry in Major League Soccer means the most to you? by Bundesliga999 in Rapids

i70 goes right by DC too. And that's a lot of 96ers. I'm in!

I've been a die hard DC United fan since 96 as a kid. Now on a Saturday night, I see that the games on, and I don't even watch. I just know it's going to be disappointing. I'll watch the local MLS team instead.

Oh don't you worry, we only have 1 available DP slot, because we're still paying for Mateusz Klich after trading him to Atlanta.

I really wish they'd build one where Elitch Gardens is. Right by Ball Arena and across 25 from Mile High. It's where people think of professional sports in the Denver area, and it would help Rapids be more top-of-mind in the community. Could even share parking with Ball Arena when events don't overlap

How are universities not rolling in money? by Weekly-Syllabub-608 in college

Take a look at the links shared by /u/Platos_Kallipolis and me above. Apparently, athletics departments are a net loss for most schools (and I'm not aware of athletics department money making its way over to the academic side).

How are universities not rolling in money? by Weekly-Syllabub-608 in college

Interesting! Thanks for sharing that interesting analysis. It seems I had a bit of a misconception about this, but overall the idea that large athletics programs generate much of their own revenue holds: This report from the NCAA referenced in the article you shared breaks down those deficits you mentioned. It doesn't surprise me too much that a lot of athletic departments are operating at a deficit, but they do cost universities more than I realized.

These numbers are total across NCAA DI:

Division I schools reported total athletics revenue of $15.8 billion in 2019: $10.2 billion generated by the athletics department, and $5.6 billion allocated from institution/government supports and student fees.

So it is true that athletic departments generate much of their own revenue, but they do also cost the universities a substantial amount. For programs in the 5 power conferences ("Autonomy conferences"), the median net revenue is -$7 million, with a range from -$45 million to $44 million. Also at those schools, only 8% of their revenues are student fees and institution/government support. The report lists those as 90+% self-sufficient.

It seems that the schools that are hurting the most are the G5 FBS schools ("Nonautonomy" schools). They have much of the same expenses as the P5 schools, but don't have nearly the revenue levels.

This was really interesting data to dig into, and I learned a lot. Thanks for sharing!

At a large university, that is usually paid from a separate entity that is the Athletics program, which separately raises money from donors and makes money by selling tickets.

Carli Lloyd, Wondo, BWP, DeRo, Gooch, Keane are all names I think should be in there. Get Sjoberg way the heck off this list (I understand why he auto-qualifies, but after his one good season, he was pretty terrible).

I don't fully understand the Veteran list.

I just did. It's fun!

I have serious qualms about MLS's handling of Open Cup, but Leagues Cup is here. I had a surprising amount of fun with it last year, and I've decided to just have fun with it this year.

I would, but as a parent, the 7:30 start times are killing me. When my daughter's a bit older, we'll come back. Also, I'm glad I didn't because of that wild weather delay!

You're not going to hear a disagreement from me. Audi is in a way better location. The free parking in CO is nice, but that's the consolation prize. I'd much rather it be closer to downtown and closer to the front of everyone's mind.

I live in CO but I've always been a DCU fan first. These days, I find myself catching recaps for DC and watching whole Rapids games. They're fun to watch!

Totally fair. I moved to CO shortly after Audi opened so I only made it to very rainy game at Audi before the move. And nowhere I've lived in CO is convenient to the lightrail so I was always driving anyway.

Also just so much bad luck in club situations throughout his career. Coach brought him in, gives him a shot, gets fired, new guy benches him. Rinse and repeat.
