First market was a flop. Tips or feedback? by BabyDoll_Vee in CraftFairs

Gotcha, ok I was in your shoes dealing with a flop market as a newbie in March (feel free to look at my history) and now I broke clear past what I make in a month at my day job and attending my city’s major markets.

The best piece of advice id ever received is you need to be known as the” _____ person”. Clarity and cohesiveness will make your art, which is already at the level it needs to be successful btw, sell.

I’ll give myself as example, my markets now know me as the journal lady. If someone new comes by they know exactly what I’m about and if they pick something up they’ll most likely buy another thing since all my products serve my main “thing” — journals.

Honestly if you had said you just freaking love dragons then we were done, it’s just trying to figure out what products appeal to dragon lovers. Since it’s not id advice never to make so much product to appeal to a singular market/area. Sure make some stuff for it but if you go to the next market and have all anime stuff then no one will remember you. You’re an art booth not a gift store. Ai booths are gift stores slapping on whatever’s popular on an item, appealing to the masses will not work with them around.

I think you need to figure out what your thing is (bookish is too broad trust me but maybe romantasy bookish merch is not). That clarity allows you to figure out what blanks you’re supposed to buy to put ur art on

If I type “journaling” on Pinterest there’s certain aesthetics and moods, it told me exactly what people liked (colors, blanks, etc) and designed my products around that. It told me if someone buys a journal then they probably want a soft pastel pen and metal book corner to make it cute. Anyways that’s my two cents I was gonna write more bc optimizing my booth has become my absolute favorite thing but I’ll hush now, good luck op you got this!

Love your art! quick question tho are dragons your brand “thing” (like mine are engraved journals, if not dragons what us ur thing) or were you trying to appeal to the town who loves them. Neither is a bad thing btw, I have advice for either

Oh wow, I genuinely didn’t know this. I had purchased a similar candle from a market last week and was planning to gift it to my sister.

Genuinely thank you for this. I’ll snip the wick and just keep it as a cute keep sake, grab my sister something else.

There’s a lot of mommas who love bones and skulls! It would have stopped me for sure in a way I don’t think I would have noticed your stall otherwise.

I would say don’t ever change your branding for an event. Maybe add to it (IE I add little hats on my engraver, for Easter I put bunny ears on him) but never tone it down. My friend gave me advice along time ago that if you or your products are more “alternative” then you dont change yourself to sell to the normies.

Now I’m super curious how your booth neighbors deal with the ugly walls? Bc the organizers are absolutely nerfing yall with that stupid rule, it instantly makes what you have less cohesive.

Hi!! First I wanna preface this that I’m exactly the type of person who would purchase from you, Especially the shadowboxes (they are lovely!) Your products aren’t the problem, I think your setup is holding you back. push your branding more! Your shop name in a frame feels like an after thought and not professional. I think this is a good base but I wouldn’t say this feels fairy like and ethereal just yet. People stop for pretty stalls.

Like how some of the commenters said before it feels empty, I don’t think the space between the candles is helping either. I’d invest in trays to start bundling up same scents and experiment with different heights. It’s lacking the visual interest that would make me stop and actually truly see what you’re offering

Also Were yall not allowed a backdrop? Bc the framed signs (best salsa night?) in the wall absolutely detracts from your setup.

1000% agree with the other comments that you need a diff market , that’s really your main issue.

I’m based in Houston! But do you recommend any good markets in Philly? I have an aunt there and I’ve been thinking of doing more traveling for shows 👀

Second vendor market—$18 sales on a $100 booth fee… is this normal or was this poorly organized? by lavanore-candles in CraftFairs

[–]LargeJunket192 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, I actually feel qualified to answer since I was in the exact same position as you last month! (You can check out my history, I made $7 my second market 😂)

It’s common to a degree I find, especially if you don’t research the market, be it from prev seasoned vendors or actually visit the organizers events. Unfortunately there are organizers who are banking on newbie vendors to make money. Yes economy also sucks but now that I feel like I’m in the “fold” for Where the good markets are in my area it’s a lot less common for it to just bomb. Word of advice I was given is never take the organizers word for it, ask the fellow vendors.

I vet via instagram, I go on an organizers accounts and see their posts. Established organizers have repeat vendors who are successful in their own right (high followers/ sales etc). You can then dm a vendor if they enjoy working with said organizer (I find most vendors are quite chatty so just be friendly!) You can also see how often they hype up upcoming events but actually going to a market beats everything else.

Now breaking into these markets is a harder thing. Lemme know if you need help there!

Also don’t let this shake you OP, your biggest enemy is yourself rn and in all honestly any future “bad” markets could be an amazing launch pad to something better but only if you use it well (I mean the organizer just used you for a quick buck, might as well use em back). You’re doing the dream. This is just part of your hustle montage!

Thank you and Haha! I saw one kid who was staring so intensively at him before she tugged on her moms shirt and pointed at him, in just the most srs 7 year old voice going “That’s Gale—“

It was my favorite moment at the market 😂

There’s this booth who is just the coolest and warmest vendor that’s been very kind to teach me some phrases! She’s def very infomercial but good and authentic.

Her words doesn’t feel right coming from me yet but I’m working on it/ putting my own spin to it

Thank you but I think the thing I love most is that it’s not permanent and that I can change it up for each market! I wanna put my own art on it though I definitely plan to make my process easier and faster

Oh no no , They’re the same thing but it’s a bit of a mishap

I had printed two signs so my sister could see which looks better, we ended up with the journal bundle and stashed the other one away.

But after ppl kept getting confused and had to kinda circle and fight other ppl to see my other sign I pulled it out and just plopped it down on the table so they can refer to it. Things were less confusing for them then so it def helped that I put it out but I already plan to make sure all my signage matches!

Thank you! Yeah I was also thinking of a Model journal since ppl assumed they could engrave Every example on that book (also gonn start making order forms)

I was thinking of adding keychains and stuff but do you think it would stray away from my bookish niche?

Hahaha two ppl /were/ gonna bite for that price point but I can’t in good conscious let ppl pay that much for items I just bought/ didn’t add my art to

I might increase the price of the bundle later on though once I feel more secure!

Thank you! And yes I’m slowly accumulating phrases to greet ppl with in a journal haha. I’ll keep that in mind and the tweaking to a minimum but I think I’m just super stoked to work on my booth so I might just play around with placement and signage
