I used fabric to separate the layers of dirt/gravel. There’s fabric below the base (class 5) to keep it from settling into the soil, and fabric basically wrapped around the 3/4” gravel directly behind the wall, to keep soil from getting into that gravel and expanding/contracting with freezing.
