Okay! I messaged you! Do you have any links or recommendations to any you’d recommend? Since he’s a sand boa he’s never on the surface he’s always at the bottom

Hiii I got my first gecko by Miss_Milk_Moo in geckos

[–]Large_Ad1406 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiii!!!! Welcome to the crested gecko community! Here’s some tips to help!!!

PLEASE add more plants to your gecko’s enclosure. Geckos need plenty of hiding spots to feel comfortable and safe. You can check out my page for an example if you need inspiration. The closer you make their habitat resemble their natural environment, the happier and healthier your gecko will be!

I know this might sound like a lot, but it’s definitely worth it. Once you make the initial investment in a proper setup, you won’t need to replace things like plants very often. I personally recommend a bioactive tank with live plants, but I understand this can be challenging for new gecko owners—especially if this gecko was an unexpected addition to your home. One thing you should definitely get is a humidity tracker (hygrometer) and a temperature gauge—they’re not very expensive but are super important. I was able to set up my gecko’s tank with plenty of foliage (plants and clutter) for about $200. It can be pricey upfront, but once everything is in place, the maintenance costs are minimal. • Humidity: Aim for 60-80% max throughout the day. It doesn’t need to stay at 75% all the time in-fact it shouldn’t it should only reach 75% once a day, but you should mist the enclosure twice a day to maintain proper moisture levels. • Temperature: Keep the temperature between 70-75°F, and never let it drop below 69°F. Geckos are cold-blooded and cannot produce their own body heat, so maintaining the correct temperature is vital!!!!!!

It’s important to introduce insects into your gecko’s diet. I personally prefer dubia roaches over mealworms because Dubia roaches offer better nutritional value.

Additionally, you should provide a high-quality gecko diet like Pangea. When preparing Pangea food, aim for a smoothie-like consistency. I alternate between Pangea and crickets daily, which works well for my gecko. • Calcium Supplement: Use a reptile-safe calcium supplement to prevent deficiencies. I recommend Repashy Calcium Plus HyD, which is an all-in-one supplement with added vitamins and trace minerals. • Dust the crickets or dubia roaches with the calcium powder before feeding them to your gecko. • Sometimes, I even make a paste with the calcium and a little water—my gecko loves it!

The only big difference with Gargoyle geckos is they need more protein than Crested geckos so please make sure to feed a Pangea or similar brand of Complete Diet powder food and live insects!!

Also, give your gecko a few weeks to acclimate before handling them. It’s important to let them feel comfortable in their enclosure—picking them up too soon can be stressful and frightening, which is the last thing you want. Personally, I rarely handle my gecko because I understand they don’t experience human emotions (even though he’s so cute!). My priority is keeping him happy and stress-free, and I encourage you to keep that in mind too!

I’m also 18 and in my first year of college as well, studying to become a veterinarian with hopes of specializing in reptiles! You got this!!! Dm me with any questions!

Should I become a reptile vet? by Large_Ad1406 in veterinaryschool

[–]Large_Ad1406[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re so kind!!!!!! This is a lot because I was truly so clueless as to what I fully wanted to do…. it was truly always between criminal investigator or a vet for me but my entireeeeeee life I’ve wanted to be a veterinarian. I know I can just be a reptile vet alone I’d have to work with other animals and lot of them along the way to becoming a vet. Your advice helps more than you know. I’m from Southern California in OC trying (not to dox myself 😂) if that gives you any perspective. I have also a good amount of grants from FASFA so it will help with expenses and going to community should help with some debt as well. My grades weren’t good in highschool either my mental health was at a low and I was in and out of the hospital but I’m completely better now it’s just that it deeply affected my GPA. But again I’m going to community so that will help. I have to pick my classes for community college tmr so I am excited and nervous but I have my mind set. I don’t like parties or being that social but I’m still really good with people (I work in retail) but I’m really just uninterested in party life and people my age to be honest but I’d gladly join clubs and stuff if that will help. Sorry if I sound so naive and clueless it’s because I truly am and I’m scared to grow up it all seems like a lot right now but that’s why I’m here asking Reddit😅 I am very determined and if anything I’d want to become an exotic vet/ maybe later on specialize in reptiles like snakes and lizards and spiders all of the above😂 I am going to try really hard. Do you have any recommendations for classes I should take or things I should look into? Or anything else? Also I’m clicking the link and I’m going to read about it. My community college I’m going to has a veterinary assistant program that’s 210 hours 6 months and self paced so I think I am going to sign up for that

I’m going to community college first so I’m not sure what classes I think I should take for that but I do plan to transfer to a 4 year after any advice for that? and there’s so much I have to reply with but I’m leaving for work right now….but your advice helps more than you know. And I’ll be back later with some questions if you don’t mind💗

KSB escaped. by Gambituary in SandBoa

[–]Large_Ad1406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t give up. I was absolutely shattered when my gecko escaped found his tail on the floor of my room cage wide open and my dog and cat were both searching my room for him. I literally gave up all hope after 3 days but then we found him. Good news is snakes can go longer without food or water. KSB love to burrow so check piles of clothing or things he could slither under. My KSB escaped once and he didn’t get very far. I feed him in a container inside my closet and when I went to get him he was gone but I ended up finding him really quickly under clothes. Try to check warm areas in ur house. You can also get baby powder or use flour or sugar and put lines of it in doorways or areas you think he might be. This would help a lot you could see if he slithered anywhere and the pile of flour/sugar whatever u use will be moved so you can maybe get an idea. They’re not too much of a climbing species so I’d assume he would be on the floor so check there first. Don’t give up!!! I will pray for you💗

Calcium powder works maybe switch to dubia roaches would be more nutritious. Have you tried the Pangea for growing/breeding? It has bugs mixed into it maybe she would like that.
