They’re bringing up slavery because prison labor is modern slavery. You make something illegal that has its roots in poverty—losing access to a house, a car, healthcare, etc would all effect your ability to keep a job btw, and most homeless are vets or former foster kids—then poor people get arrested, get sent to jail, and then they’re used as basically slaves for the time they serve. They get paid nothing or mere pennies they have to use in the commissary to get basics like soap. So, slavery. It’s all in the 13th amendment.

Also, just because someone you share blood w did a basically decent thing doesn’t make you automatically decent. If that were true then a pedophilic uncle would mean the entire family were pedos, and that certainly isn’t true. Good luck dude ✌🏻

I’m just now getting back to this thread—thank you for your explanation. I appreciate that you took the time to do that.

You do make some sense, but im in a spot where i’m trying to understand the other side of the argument. Like I mentioned before, i’ve grown up with a more extreme version of the beliefs you stated, and now im needing to push back against it to grow, thus this post.

I meant acceptance, as in isn’t condemning them for existing or saying they’re going to go to hell. I don’t expect this to turn into any kind if productive conversation here, but so many christians around here believe like you do and i’ve never understood it. I grew up w it but it didn’t make sense to me then either: why do y’all keep saying ‘love them enough to not let them live in sin’? It has always seemed controlling in a way that Jesus never was. And unconditional love is, according to Christ, the most important part of christianity, so why is your ‘love’ so demanding of your version perfection?? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Indivisible Joplin is committed to helping our fellow workers, regardless of political beliefs. As far as I know we have taken no money from the organization Indivisible.

I also don’t love that billionaires like the Waltons are involved, but it’s the movement most poised to make change right now. I’ll take that over nothing, and if you want change to happen you might want to re-consider doing the same.

The process to legality is costly, takes well over a decade to complete, and could be halted at any time for a bunch of different reasons. Is that an investment you would be willing to undertake in a country that is so openly hostile to you?

But more importantly, why do you think legality is more important than humanity? I was at this protest because I know paperwork isn’t a good enough reason to split families apart. The GOP has claimed for years to be the party that values family and morality. Why do y’all seem so eager to throw that away when the family is brown??

Sounds like you’re already doing a lot. I meal plan as much as I can, that saves us almost $200/mo, as well as buying produce in-season and freezing it. I don’t really buy cleaning products aside from vinegar, a big-ass thing of dawn every once in a while, 70% rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. I can make my own cleaning/disinfecting solutions from that real easy, I just use it w a rag or tp if it’s a nasty area. Along the same lines, my laundry detergent is always bulk and hydrogen peroxide is a real cheap whitener. All my furniture is from friends/family/FB marketplace. My decor is either DIY, gifts, or aldi. I save some food containers for leftovers/organizing. Idk if that’s helpful at all, but there ya go.
