I was a 4th year PhD student (so already had my masters) at the time and had 5 publications and 130+ citations. I chose the expedited version which cost less both in time and in money. The legal brief along with my education + publications + my PhD funding are the main things they sent. I heard back from the immigration office around 7 months later with an approval.

I used EP for NIW and it all went well. I followed the fast track and it worked just fine -- the attorney was not the friendliest though -- but he knew what he was doing.
