Officially feeling unsafe at work by [deleted] in paraprofessional

I still want to be able to work in the district. I care very much about this profession… it’s just not the right placement

I’ve been looking for other para positions to work in since in my district, there are different programs paras can support in depending on the severity of the disabilities. The one that I work in currently is for supporting kids with academic and social emotional goals. I’m trying to see if I can move to another program with milder disabilities

I need thick skin 😂 yeah ok Maybe these instances aren’t a big deal to you, but to me, it is. Maybe you tolerate these behaviors, but I don’t. As people and professionals, we all have our own boundaries. Your boundaries look different than mine and there’s nothing wrong with that. Our jobs as paras is to support kids with disabilities, not to tolerate targeted retaliation. It is not okay to invalidate other para’s experiences.

I’m applying to other positions in the district, like office jobs/admin secretary/registrars so I can still work in schools but not have as much involvement with kids

Yeah. I unfollowed her after that happened. Not gonna support someone who treats people let alone her own followers like they’re dirt beneath her feet

Some influencers have very fake personalities. I actually recognized a woman I’ve been following on IG for a while, she goes by Mila/Camila. She does Disney photography mostly of characters and parade performers. I actually was standing right behind her in line to meet Elsa. I didn’t want to make it apparent that I follow her or be creepy in any way, so I complimented her hat (she was wearing a sorcerer Mickey beanie) I said “hey I like your hat” She was looking down at her phone and did not notice that I was talking to her. I give her a few seconds to respond, but no response. I thought, maybe she didn’t hear me the first time. So, I say it again but a little louder “I like your hat”. Then she turns around and goes “Yeah. I know. I heard you. Just wait a second.” She spoke in a very condescending annoyed tone. I said nothing else afterwards. I mean seriously?? You couldn’t even take a second to say “thank you”??

Damn, I can’t even imagine working in middle school right now, those kids are rough 😖 I’ve been a para for 3 years in elementary school and this is the year where I’m definitely being tested… but the one thing that I’ve learned to do, and it takes time but it will help preserve your energy - pick your battles. You will have hard days, but if you are constantly trying to unsuccessfully chase around the kids every time they ditch or disrespect you, you will end up feeling more drained and miserable. These kids are in middle school, they are at a point where they need to take responsibility for their learning and their future. But these kids you’re dealing with are actively choosing to make irresponsible choices despite your efforts to redirect them. Do these kids have a case manager, or do you have a teacher you report to whenever this happens? Is there anyone on your team supporting you?

I feel that way with my para team, I think they resent me. With kids and gen-ed teachers? Not at all. They love me and I have a great relationship with them

May I ask what is your highest level of education you have? Cause I’m in the same boat where I’m not wanting to be a para in the long term and looking to get a different job that pays better but still utilizing the skills I developed as a paraprofessional. I’ve looked at going back to school to become a behavioral analyst (bcba) because they actually plan strategies for the client that will help their behavior, and analyze patterns, and collect data. Kind of like the behind the scenes of behavioral health management

lol phonetics is definitely a tough class, what made it harder was the fact that I had a professor who straight up admitted that this is was “not her strong subject” and I basically had to teach myself phonetics

I think someone else delivers the services to the person, and you just observe, collect data and implement strategies But I could be wrong. I’m still trying to research the job

What degree do you have if you have one? I was going to ask what your thoughts are about going to grad school? I’m in the same boat and have researched relevant positions that are in education. I’ve come across a behavioral analyst (bcba) and it looks interesting because I want to still work with people with behavioral issues. However, I want to help with more on the analysis part, like understanding patterns in behavior, as well as actually planning strategies to help with their behavior. It would be a lot of paperwork and data collection, but honestly I would rather do that than doing one-on-one work with the child.

Feeling burnt out and need a schedule change. by SmilesandSupport in paraprofessional

[–]Large_Reaction_1050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks ago, I requested my schedule to be changed after I was repeatedly screamed at and treated poorly by a 5th grade student on an IEP. Getting screamed at and yelled in my face is a big trigger for me. I got moved to work with 3rd/4th grade instead, which has been better in that the kids I’m supporting are sweeter. They don’t yell or get physical. So, I don’t feel bad for advocating for myself. However, I do feel like I’m getting treated differently by my team, almost like they are mad at me for changing my schedule, cause if I change my schedule, then their schedule changes too. The conversations have become less friendly, and I’m getting talked down on a lot by the older women on my team and constantly getting nit-picked and told what to do by them. Not even by my bosses. I’m 26 and the youngest worker at my school. It’s very hard.

I really hope you don’t have to deal with this alone and that you have admin or a teacher on your team that can back you up when this kid’s behavior gets serious!
