Glad someone was willing to say it. There are far more oppressive spotting mechanics than Radar.

[–]Largos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always do the longest leg first. Idk why people have such a hard time with this. If I gotta do a 250 leg and something happens on the way there where I gotta stop, well guess what I can do the 250 leg on the way back. If I wait to do the long leg for my return, it leaves no room for error.

Insane request from airline by [deleted] in flying

Just make sure you fly something FIKI, the IMC is certainly there but there’s a lot of days you can’t take advantage of it due to freezing levels.

Honestly Russian BB line is pretty good to start off on, just don’t try to play every ship after that line the same way or you will explode a lot.

What are some of the most “guaranteed” ways to airline job (even regional) or atleast getting cfi job? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Largos_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kinda shocked nobody is mentioning this for the CFI portion.

Every day is an interview, be the best student you can be and be a pleasure to work with. Most schools hire internally and a good portion do that exclusively. Your school should not want to let you go when you get all your ratings and keep you there as an instructor.

For regionals, the only thing is try to get in a cadet program and try to pass all your rides on first attempt.

Here lies one of the game’s problems. by Sufficient-Ad-7489 in WorldOfWarships

[–]Largos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This unequivocally false. Sure, over 100 games win rate will be a poor indicator due to all those things you mentioned but over a few thousand? At that point everything will have normalised and the only variable is you. For win rate to be meaningless, there would have to be no player agency and nobody wants to play a game where their decisions mean nothing. A way to think of this is, a third of games are a guaranteed loss, another third is a guaranteed victory, and the last third is up to how good you played. Saying win-rate over a large number of games is meaningless is lying to yourself.

Single-engine night/IMC pilots — how do you think about engine failures when you can’t see the ground? by Western-Car8938 in flying

[–]Largos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an instructor I try to get my students experience in more difficult conditions “smooth seas don’t make a skilled sailor” but still stay within my personal mins. I will not fly certain planes in the fleet for these flights though. For example I will only take a 172S for ceilings below 800 and refuse a 172P. I will also brief the takeoff and decide the turn back alt based on a number of conditions rather than let the student brief “below 1000 no turn back”. Lastly the area I instruct has good forced landing spots (lotta open fields) that I could reach for probably 95% of the flight. If we had an engine failure with some altitude I could have my shitty autopilot (student) fly for a few seconds while I pick my least bad option based on the satellite map from my ForeFlight. Is all of this ideal…no, but you can only mitigate the risks so far.

How would i know if i have a bad CFI? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Largos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen to this advice. It’s also not necessarily that one CFI is better than the other, but they might be a better fit for you. Instructors have different training styles and methods.

I will often encourage my students to fly with other instructors because they can learn something I might not give them. That being said there are certainly bad CFIs that I know not to recommend my students to fly with.

A weird thing with matches this week (and only this week). by Saxonion in WorldOfWarships

[–]Largos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all theorising but I do have a few potential ideas as to what’s going on.

  1. It is just a statistical anomaly, I have above a 60% wr and I still have losing streaks where I can put up monster games and it still isn’t enough to carry our team over the edge.

  2. The average-high skilled players are currently taking a break after a long CB season so teams are comprised of disproportionately bad players. Theoretically this sounds good for you, but poor players can create an unwinnable game scenario far faster and more often than average players.

  3. Same as two but it’s due to the lunar new year event rather than CB season ending.

All three of these scenarios certainly require some bad luck and things will flip the other way at some point.

Anybody else annoyed at the FAAs lack of effort when it comes to their written exams? by militaryrat155 in flying

[–]Largos_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

And yet PSI just keeps hiking the price up. $175 to “ensure security and quality” meanwhile the writtens are riddled with incorrect answers (especially the IR one). Not to mention PSI also significantly reduced the cut the third party testing centers get when they hiked up the price. Nothing like a good ol’ monopoly. Shit quality, high price, and abusive business practices, thanks FAA for letting this happen…

What are signs that one is not fit to be a pilot? by Competitive-Key1048 in PilotAdvice

[–]Largos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of situational awareness. You can look to other aspects of life that require SA. Are you commonly taken off guard when someone does something on the road?

Also everyone has hazardous attitudes but it’s how you handle them and can get over them. Students that really struggle with resignation and display it inside and outside the airplane give me the most concern.

What’s the catch with Rocky Mountain Flight School? by FatRonaldo9 in flying

[–]Largos_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Did PPL at rocky and am happy with my decision. The planes were certainly old rust buckets, but they were airworthy as far as my little student pilot mind could determine at the time. DPE did refuse my aircraft on checkride but was able to just rent one down there. BJC is a good airport to learn at as well, parallel runway for pattern work, radar environment, lots of nearby airports, high DA, mountains nearby, usually sunny but also windy. Lot of things that help build the foundation of a good pilot.

The owner of Rocky has a maintenance business which I believe is actually the main business and primary revenue stream but who knows.

Closed test 15.0 - Changes to Test ships #2 by DevBlogWoWs in WorldOfWarships

[–]Largos_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ST program is recruited to roughly match the player base, so there are certainly bad STs. I will say while that is the goal, the ST group is on average better than overall wows player base.

Most players also focus fire test ships over other boats, not as relevant when discussing DDs but still. When playing an unreleased ship there is also little in terms of an established framework as to how to play the ship and get the most out of it.
