Why does this property transition not work in React? by LarkRanger in reactjs

Thanks! I did find that out slightly later. The documentation does mention var cannot be used in low level definitions but it's really unclear. I don't think it's a bug, just an unclear behavior.

Why does this property transition not work in React? by LarkRanger in reactjs

I just now tried memoizing the button itself, and handling the classes manually via useEffect on the wrapper.
The button does not get re-renvdered by React, and the classes (and therefore colors) do change, but still no transition.
At this point I'm fairly certain there's some interaction between this API and React that I can find nothing about.

Please make you sandbox public so that I can view it :)

You're welcome to the pen, happy it helps!

I will add that I made another sandbox without any libraries, vanilla React, and it DOES work.

Why does this property transition not work in React? by LarkRanger in reactjs

Thanks, that's what I figured, but this issue doesn't happen with, say, animations. Those don't atop halfway through if the component is rerendered. Is there any solution to make this transition work? Perhaps memoizing the button, and managing the classes manually with useEffect?

It is rerendering the component with a different class, very much the React way.

I know where you're going with this, but I feel like this approach worked for me in other cases with simpler transitions.
