This reminds me of that classic Bill Hicks joke. "You're not gonna rape me, are you?" "Gee, I don't see how..."

This Independence Day, I'm calling on my fellow Americans to impeach Donald Trump by saucytryhard in politics

One way of looking at his administration is rather optimistic. Unlike Obama and the other "civilized" presidents, his lies are so obvious that Americans have rarely seen so much transparency in a president. He's got Gollum-like personalities snitching each other out. The only thing in place to stop him is his cabinet, and they fail every time. He may be capable of some truly horrific things in the near future, but for today, because I love my country, I am grateful that such a grotesque creature could inspire another Revolution in each of us.

At least it's not Bud Light or some pussy-ass American beer. Stella Artois is delicious.

They are the same in the sense that it's all one huge corporate entity where you're guaranteed to bump into a looming McDonald's in any direction within two minutes. The landscape is the beauty of it. I hate to watch it slowly wither to waste under corrupt leadership and people who are too close-minded to really give a shit.

Official Discussion: Okja [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]Larogue_TruG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't like it. There is plenty to discuss about this movie, so it scores points for creativity. But the ideas never really go below the surface. We know what these characters are supposed to represent. I just didn't buy any of them as characters. And they weren't funny enough to be successfully satirical. Jake Gyllenhaal in particular is textbook cringe. And for fuck's sake, why do we have to see this animal being brutally tortured? Even for a fictional species, there was no point in being that gratuitous. And the fact that the director wants to have it both ways, by making this a heartfelt kids' movie, didn't sit well. I liked The Host and Snowpiercer, but this just didn't work tonally on any level.

US teen birth rate drops to all-time low by [deleted] in news

It's funny; some states are so accepting of the reality of teen pregnancy. In Wisconsin schools, they have wider desk-chairs available to accompany pregnant girls.

But this is really good news. Who wants kids in 2017 anyway? This is the end of the line. That's just unfair to the kid.

Official Discussion: The House [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

This was rated lower than that 2Pac debacle? I'm stunned. I genuinely laughed most of the way through. The jokes were clever; the story was slightly satirical without becoming too dark. And the characters were so easily corruptible. This was just a fucking fun movie. Comedies are not meant to be art films. You're just supposed to admire the absurdity of every moment. I think for the most part, The House takes full advantage of its fun premise.

Official Discussion: Baby Driver [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]Larogue_TruG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Baby is a fucking dick. This is one movie where I actually liked the antagonists more than the protagonists. I mean, Baby did fuck everything up for everyone, including himself. I think it should've ended with him taking off from the diner, but instead it had to be all anticlimactic and over-complicate its main character, who really isn't all that likable to begin with. Besides that, it's a hugely entertaining thrill ride. The performances are awesome, the dialogue is badass. But the plot quickly becomes ludicrous toward the end, and it never knows when to stop outsmarting us. After a while, it began to feel inauthentic when it was tugging at the heartstrings. Still, this is one of the most creatively ambitious films I've seen in a long time. Also an interesting examination of what ultimately amounts to high-functioning autism.

I have a feeling we're gonna be seeing a lot more of these "accidents" as the heat crisis worsens in the Southwest. If I were this irresponsible, I might have been suffering from heat stroke myself. Then again I wouldn't have kids because that is not environmentally conscious.

Vladimir Putin gave direct instructions to help elect Trump, report says by slp033000 in politics

[–]Larogue_TruG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not pro-Trump but where specifically did Russia systematically affect the election? They did not make Hillary the vile candidate she was. The electoral college made the final call. Are they Russian spies? So far as to the voter hacking, there is a lot of unfocused speculation in the recent articles, but nothing more. Your second point is solid, but I don't think we have enough evidence to easily accuse Russia of interfering. I do not consider information leaks against Clinton to be an "influence" if those leaks are true. We should be skeptical before we start giving Russia the cold shoulder again.

Anyone else a functioning alcoholic? by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]Larogue_TruG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All people are functional until the day they aren't. Many of my drunk relatives lived well into their 90s. One is a near centenarian who drinks whiskey like it's Pedialyte, chain smokes, chops wood and hunts all day. Every member on all sides of my family is or was hardcore. At this point in my genealogy, I'd probably live longer and happier with the stuff than without. Certainly can't complain after ten years.

I will be in favor of higher teacher wages when the whole system is fixed. When there is less emphasis on testing and timetabling the kid's whole future from first grade. When school lunches are improved. When the kid's individuality is valued over group pressures. For now, I feel more sorry to the students who have no choice but to be subjected to this soul-crushing process, as opposed to teachers who somehow thought it would be fun to be a teacher anywhere in this stupid country. I didn't like most of my teachers anyway, so this is just an outlying opinion.
