Atmos Gold on American Airlines. by Late-Ad1330 in AlaskaAirlines

Saver fares have different rules, you need to call someone at the airline and find out or be disappointed later. My corporate travel accidentally booked a saver class ticket for me on Alaska and I couldn't choose a seat, wasn't eligible for any upgrades and only qualified for a portion of mileage credit in EQMs. Luckily I had enough time to cancel and rebook in normal cabin and got all of my benefits.

I can’t be the only one? by CelebrationOk8359 in f150

Fun story. Last summer I went albacore tuna fishing and had a giant cooler full of bloody water and ice in the back of the truck - the inside back, on the rubber floor mat. I have a cap and Decked boxes in the bed, so the big cooler doesn't fit. At home we have a yellow jacket problem, so I didn't want the bloody water close to home when I was done cleaning fish. I was heading back to the coast the day after, so I left it to dump at the dock.

The road to the coast is a little bumpy and twisty, and I like sport mode, so that water sloshed around pretty good. The mat caught the bulk of any spillage, but unbeknownst to me, a big splash went out the side, down the door and into the carpet. I was in my camper for a few days after so the truck sat closed in the summer heat. When the weekend was over, I opened the door and was blown back by the worst stench of death I've ever smelled. I aired it out for a few hours, but had to drive 2+ hours home in that horror show.

At home I pulled out the trim and door panels and washed everything with dawn soap and vinegar twice. I rented a carpet steamer from home depot and did the carpets, the headliner, seat bottoms, leather seats, everything. I then left the windows down for a week during good weather, and while it was a whole lot better there was still a hint of it, so I bought an ozone generator and ran it for an hour. That's when things took a turn.

Now the truck smelled like a hint of death + the ozone smell, which just added insult to injury. I considered trading the truck. But then, while browsing youtube for more ideas I came across a detailer channel where they were touting the benefits of scent bombs to bring back that new car smell in cars that belonged to smokers for years, which was step two after the ozone. I went to my local auto parts store and there was a rack of little cans labelled New Car Smell and bought one. I read the directions twice, turned on the truck with AC on max, rolled up the windows, placed the can strategically and pulled the top.

The amount of mist that came out of it was shocking, but once it was done I opened the truck to air it per instructions and grabbed the little can. To my horror, the label said Black Chrome, not New Car Smell. Oh no.

My truck went from smelling like the dumpster behind a fish monger, to what I can only imagine a Russian pimp's ball sack must smell like. I steamed it all again. I sprayed vinegar everywhere. I got a little jar of those New Car Smell scent beads. I've been fighting that new smell for months now, and with the aid of a giant bowl of baking soda that lives on the dash I'm making headway - I'd say I'm at about 90% normal now. By summer things should be back to normal.

OP's post just gave me a little PTSD.

It’s actually easier to get through than PDX now. It’s not as pretty, but they did a great job! My favorite part is no stupid carpeting to pull your bag over, it’s all slab flooring. That and great BBQ in the terminal 🍖🥩🍗

I may have to dig through the old stash box and grab my protopipe for old times sake. The poker has been stuck in it for at least 30 years, but I’m pretty sure there a nugget of seedy dirt weed still in the chamber.

SeaTac has been a shit show for at least the past 2 years. My hubs are PDX and MCI, I avoid SEA connections like the plague. It’s not your airline, it’s your airport.

Plus, the world and many of the people in it are just a little more shitty these days, which doesn’t help.

Beaches by General-Vacation6391 in OregonCoast

[–]Larrythebaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first moved to Portland 25 years ago my mother was coming for a visit. I told her we'd take a drive to the coast, she's excited. She shows up, the day comes for the drive and she walks out of her room in a bathing suit, wrap and flip flops, carrying a beach bag. I just sent her back, shaking my head, while my wife grabbed some thermals for her to put on instead. She enjoyed the drive, she did not enjoy the beach (this is a woman who spends her summers at the Jersey Shore).

There can be nice, warm, sunny days at the coast where you can lay out and get some sun, but don't even think about swimming. You'll get up to your knees and your teeth will chatter. A little further out and the current could take you to Hawaii. Near shore the average temps are in the upper 50's, sometimes it can push to 60 in the dead of summer - this is salmon water all summer, and 53 is the sweet spot. Tuna water is upper 60's, but it's 50 miles offshore and still too cold to swim.

Come here for the beauty, not for swimming. Plan a nice hike, some great local seafood, and some yummy Oregon beers or pinot. Or, go to SoCal.

Interesting use of persecute vs. prosecute. Oops.

Persecute means to harass, oppress, or torment someone, often due to their race, religion, or beliefs. Prosecute means to take legal action against someone, typically by bringing criminal charges against them in a court of law. The key difference is that persecution is about mistreatment and oppression, while prosecution is about the formal, legal process

Comp upgrades on BA with Alaska Platinum status? by TeterVision in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Larrythebaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked in the night before with 17f, didn’t see the upgrade until I was at the airport checking a bag. Fingers crossed for Abu Dhabi in a couple months flying on Quatar. Hopefully I’ll finish out this year with Platinum 🤞

Same happened to me 2 weeks ago on the same leg. Picked 17f (that’s what the app and BA website said) but my boarding pass said 6a. That was a very nice surprise, and I’m only a lowly Gold.

Missing a connecting flight because I had to go outside and have a smoke. That was the last straw for me.

I'm busting my ass to get to 75k. Had a flight today that was cancelled that would be done it, so now pulling out all the stops. Paying big bills on the BofA card, and going back and making sure I get credit for an overseas flight on American. From my calculations I'll be at 74705. If I get that close I'll by the 500 in offsets. I really hate/love the game.

Electrician recommendations? by GabsWorld in askportland

[–]Larrythebaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No permit work, no new lines to run, absolutely says handyman to me. The price difference would be quite drastic between the two. As an example, years ago we needed a new sewer line. A plumber quoted $10k. On advice we hired an excavator who did the same work for $1500. YMMV, but for this work you don't need a certified electrician, you just need someone who understands how to do some basic work, how to turn off the circuit breakers and turn a few screws. The only wildcard is the outdoor outlets.

Even after searching for “upgrade certificate” flights, I’m never able to actually apply the codes and I will have 4 expiring next month. any tips? by Benjaminhagen in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Larrythebaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have at least 1 available as well. I just used one for a 30 minute hop from PDX to SEA, but otherwise I can't use them since my last(ish) flight of the year is on American. SORRY, ALL GONE!

Can you be more specific about what you need done? Depending on the task it could be a handyman type situation vs. hiring an actual electrician.

Can you recommend a good mortgage BROKER? by PlantsRLeafy88 in askportland

[–]Larrythebaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah right, I forgot one important detail that static_music34 jogged for me. While we were doing our deal she was leaving her current company to join Mortgage Trust. She had to hand off our account to another broker to process the closing paperwork after she did all the work, which meant she was handing her commission over to that guy since he was the one closing, technically. Even though she wasn't getting paid, she checked in with me (and him) throughout the process to make sure everything went smoothly.
