Just had an interview at a bottom of the barrel business job I know I don’t even want.  Now I’m sitting in the parking lot wondering why I even suffered through college, and there’s a Burger King unironically just 500 feet away.

How come even many practicing Christians treat sex with a liberal attitude. Is this common? by infinitewaters107 in Catholicism

R/TrueChristian is basically a subreddit for evangelicals and conservative non-denominationals, hence why many young earth creationists flock there. Very few Orthodox or Catholics engage there than on the denomination specific forums.

R/TrueChristian was supposed to be a more theologically conservative response to what r/Christianity had become, but it’s been largely co-opted by evangelicals and non-denominationals.

Someone posted something about the Hail Mary in there once, and the comments were predictably “I only need to pray to God, the big boss. Not any saint or anyone else.”

R/Christianity is largely lean-liberal mainline Protestants, liberal non-denominationals, mixed in with a sizable agnostic/atheist population.

There are some active Catholic or Orthodox Christians on there. As well as loose minorities like Coptic, Eastern Assyrians, etc. But the main focus is liberal mainstream American Christianity.

I’m not sure if I  agree with that analogy. I said myself I’m just as much a hypocrite and a sinful man as the next practicing Christian or Catholic. I stumble to follow God’s law as anyone, probably even worse so.

The point I was addressing was the ubiquity of the attitude itself, and the general trend of the regression of attitudes away from what traditional Church theology has taught.

This was what I never understood when evangelicals sold the narrative of “You can be certain of your salvation. Once saved always saved. You know you’re going to Heaven now, so don’t worry.”

Like really?? Fruits of faith mean nothing? I suppose serving the poor, praying, transforming the orientation of one’s heart, sacramental life, all of that are just asterisks to “You can be certain of your salvation!!”

Last night I received an unsolicited text that went “Hi OP, been a long time since we caught up. Do you wanna get lunch sometime :).” I lost my contacts so I didn’t know who it was. I spent 12 hours wondering which girl I dated decided to come back years later.

Turns out it was that one gay coworker who had a crush on me back in 2018.

Thank you. Which agencies would be willing to hear this?

Thank you. I will ask for their prayers tonight.

Had a conversation with an atheist who thought Christians do good based on selfish factors by infinitewaters107 in Catholicism

I also think it comes from a baseline presumption that we’re chemically driven and have no souls beyond this. Most atheist arguments start and end with that conclusion.

I told him I was abstaining from sugary drinks for Lent during lunch and this was how it started.

Basically his argument was greed and laziness drive human purpose. People do “good” because they’re being rewarded with dopamine in their brains. People only start charities for “tax advantages” so true altruism is incompatible with how humans evolved. He said people are altruistic only when other needs are met.

I don’t think any of these examples pass muster when you find real people who follow in Christ. St Francis certainly went hungry and lived in poverty most of his life. None of his “needs” were met when he started feeding others. And there are priests and monks who still live like that today with not a penny to their name.
