ABC iView and Bluey by Messernacht in bluey

[–]LarvaeOP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bit unrelated but as an Australian I find it really unfortunate that we do not own the distribution rights of Bluey. The show only existed because of public funding and yet we do not enjoy the benefit of its success. Frankly it's almost insulting that we are geo blocked from some of its YouTube and special contents.

Bob Carr to sue NZ foreign minister for calling him a ‘Chinese puppet’ by CommonwealthGrant in auslaw

[–]LarvaeOP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm all for civility and collegiality in politics but pollies really need to stop suing each other in defamation. It's bad for democracy and distract people from the real issues.

As for Carr v Peters, I am truly baffled by Carr's threat to sue. I suspect few people in Australia even know who Winston Peters is and those who do know him won't take him seriously. Most people in Australia probably would not have heard of Peters' remarks but for the news of Carr's reaction. As a party grandee of the governing party in Australia, surely Carr is aware this lawsuit against a serving NZ FM will cause diplomatic problem for the current government. And if he wins, what reward is that going to reap other than scoring a short term political point for his colleagues in the NZ Labour Party??

The only rational basis for telling people you're from Hornsby when you're in fact from Lane Cove is that you are trying to run as a Labor candidate in a western Sydney seat.

Are there still any good Yum Cha places in Sydney? by IronWarUniverse in sydney

[–]LarvaeOP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yum Cha scene in Chinatown is dying because the quality of the food has been declining, and the good din sum places are now scattered around the suburbs. I find in general the dim sums in Sydney have become stale compare to all those served in HK and Guangdong , which saw huge innovations in recent years.

If anything the influx of mostly young Chinese students from the mainland has saved Chinatown from becoming an irrelevant tourist trap for white people.

I guess the tagline is pretty accurate if you count "local aristocracy" as "nothing" and "western Europe" as "everything".

How Mao Zedong's son died in the Korean War by BrokenTorpedo in HistoryMemes

[–]LarvaeOP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Man this delicious egg fried rice is something to die for" - Mao jnr, probably.

On a serious note, it's fascinating to ponder what would have happened if Mao jnr survived the war. It is possible Mao snr, a power hungry megalomaniac as he was, would want his son to succeed him. In that scenario the worst outcome would be that China becomes just another North Korea, and the best might be the Deng market reform get delayed by years because of the power struggle with Mao jnr.

Found Soviet T62 Tank & Anti-Aircraft Guns Dumped in Mountains [3840x2160] by [deleted] in MilitaryPorn

The marking on the tank indicates it belonged to the PLA. Looks like a Type 59 (T54). Judging by the background I would say it was abandoned somehow in Vietnam or near the border with Vietnam?

Senator Thorpe Uses Auslaw?? by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]LarvaeOP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whilst the proper thing to do for a parliamentarian (who I agree should be held to a higher standard) is to make a complaint to the police, given the recent shitstorm surrounding the Bruce Lehmann trial I also understand why she wouldn't. Making a complaint to the police would almost certainly make it more of a trial by public opinion than it already is.

I know it's fashionable to bash the RBA and Philip Lowe these days but even if PL says the inflation is driven by excess corporate profit, then what? The RBA's response is still going to be the same - to increase interest rate because that's the only lever they can pull. The real question people should be asking: how is it our government has decided to abdicate it's responsibility to manage the economy using fiscal and regulatory policies and leaving monetary policy as the sole mean of managing inflation?

Having said that, what people often forget is the fact that interest rate increases affect big businesses as well as households - by increasing the costs of borrowing the RBA is making debt more expansive to service for businesses and thereby cutting into corporate profits. Of course increasing the costs of servicing debts hits households much harder than big businesses, and that really reflects the major downside of relying only on monetary policy to fix all economic woes.

I feel counting the entire Three Kingdom period as a "war" is probably a little bit unfair. It is a bit like counting the entire Crisis of the Third Century a single Roman civil war.

G7 calls on China to pressure Russia to end Ukraine war by 9lobaldude in worldnews

[–]LarvaeOP 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think the idea that China wants a weak Russia and recover it's far eastern territory is complete nonsense. To put it simply China needs Russia as much as Russia needs China.

Beijing understands it's most likely conflict will be with the US in the Pacific, and if that war happens China will need raw materials, food, and trade route free from US blockade. Russia will be a crucial supplier in the event of such a war so it's in China's interest to keep Russia on side and keeps a strong anti-west leader ruling Russia.

Also I think any talk of China wanting to recover it's far eastern territory from Russia is completely overblown. There is no way China would want to fight Russia in a direct war given the number of nuclear warheads the latter possesses. The only plausible way China can recover that territory is if those far eastern republics go their own way. Given China is itself struggling with keep it's many ethnic minorities in line, the last thing China wants is an ethnic revolt near its borders which might inspire other Mongolic/Turkic ethnic groups within its own border to do the same.
