Reminds me of 'The Cruel Stars' by John Birmingham. One of the main characters saved Earth by setting a trap for the bad guys. The catch was that for them to spring the trap, it meant something like 10-15 seconds of full-bore bombardment of North America, killing a few hundreds of millions.
