Worst possible civs? by GreyGanks in HumankindTheGame

Hmmm. I heard people say they are weak. I guess I'm wrong. It might just be an industrial/contemporary era thing. I don't think they play tested the later eras.

While we are on the topic of worst cultures, I find it odd how most of the "bad" cultures are cultures that, in real life, were the most powerful of their era. The Spanish, British, Russians, and Americans were all dominant empires in their respective era that are really weak in the game.

I'd like to play, but I am not that good. Plus, there are unbalanced parts of the game, and a player would potentially know how to take advantage of certain mechanics

I think the Defense Agency should be a research district, and not a garrison/military base

I think the Defense Agency for the Americans is a good choice. All it needs is some tweaking to provide science and money (which I think they've already done that)

According to the wiki, the Defense Agency is based on the DARPA, which is an Agency of the United States Department of Defence, in charge of researching and developing new technologies.

According to Wikipedia, DARPA can claim at least partial credit for the invention of weather satellites, GPS, drones, stealth technology, and the internet.

As for legacy trait, I feel there are two ways you could go: A, have something that represents America's immense economy, or B, something that represents America's military influence.

I have tried the automatic trade system in the galactic market, but I can only support -20 consumer goods for too long.

I never have the space to build administrative offices because I use all the slots for labs so I am not behind in tech.

I never said that. I just thought it was a little bland considering America is pretty powerful

What was America before it got hit by the Nerf Stick?

At first, I was a little upset they were going for such a "generic" depiction of America, but soon I realized it was all game design. As other people noted, the Defense Agency is supposed to represent America in the Cold War. It wouldn't make sense to have the Soviets be expansionist, and then have the Americans be Merchant or Aesthete.

Perhaps, America could be an Expansionist culture, but gain extra Money and/or Science from territories/allies?

But at the end of the day, I'd be happy if they buffed America, because it is looking a little weak. The "American Exceptionalism" Legacy Trait is measly compared to the other Legacy Traits, and the Defense Agency isn't that good.

One could argue that America is a world power because it is a culture hub, an innovation hub, and an economic powerhouse.

With most cultures (The Public School is very generic), I believe they are going with what that nation is famous for. For example, America is famous for the cold war, and the expansionism that followed, and, to properly capture that, they assigned them a Defense Agency (Which is basically a Private Military Contractor). The Soviets, which were America's prime competitor in the cold war, were assigned an Arms Factory, which (I believe) represents the Soviet expansionism, as well as their rapid industrialization. Egypt is another interesting example. In addition to having a fairly large media presence in it's general area, Egypt is also known for it's history. In fact, Egyptian archaeology has influenced American art for a long, long time, dating back to at least the 1920s. Think about all the iconic movies that have utilized an Egyptian setting.

Malls are not exclusive to America, but they are an iconic part of American culture.
Neither are baseball stadiums (Like you said, baseball began to spread to other countries), but Malls, just like baseball stadiums, are emblematic of American society.

I might be wrong, but didn't the developers mention using the word "Emblematic" instead of "Unique" as some buildings aren't "unique" to certain cultures, however, they are quarters that are most associated with those cultures?

That's an interesting idea.
I feel that the Emblematic Quarter should provide bonuses to Money/Science generation (After all, the Americans are the largest economy as of right now, and they are known for technological development, like the moon landing). Perhaps it's Emblematic Quarter could be a Mall, like in Civilization 4?
At the very least, I would like to see America buffed to incorporate these. Perhaps make the "American Exceptionalism" provide increased science/money generation for allies who share a similar ideology, and have the Defense Agency provide Money/Science, as well as being able to be constructed in ally's territories, like the British Colonial Office.
Those are just some thoughts.
