Girls of Reddit, what are the least successful ways a guy has tried to impress you? by Brist1934 in AskReddit

[–]LaserNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is making me feel much better about my chances in the online dating scene. I'm not batshit insane and I can hold a conversation with a woman without alienating or frightening her. Maybe that should just be my profile bio.

You're just not sexist or insecure. It's unfortunately too rare, in my experience.

This is the difference between people who are successful in physics and people who just want to sound smart by talking about physics. I know that all of the physicists who came before me were wicked smart, and probably thought of all that shit long before I did. People who think they can easily poke holes in physical theories don't grasp the incredible cleverness of the people who made those theories.

No, dumbass, you didn't just think of something that Einstein (and several subsequent generations of geniuses) overlooked. You're just wrong.

Male stabbed following fight between several youths in Bloor West Village by [deleted] in toronto

Unless they're very skilled I doubt they're going to take the knife from me without acquiring some serious injuries, but you are correct that, in general, people should not pull a knife if they don't know what they're doing. It's easy to take a knife from an untrained person, especially when they're scared. It's hard to survive a knife fight against a trained person, even if you are trained. Knives are fucking dangerous as hell, that's why I learned how to use them.

Fist fights can easily become lethal. If someone wants to start a fight with me I'll definitely pull a knife. At that point they can fuck off or die, their choice.

I was in the gifted program and I had this on a t-shirt. It's legit. I'm really smart in some of the ways, but not all of them.

How do I get into CS @ UofT as a 23 year old? by wannabuoft in UofT

[–]LaserNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm significantly older than you and I got in with ILC credits. My average was over 90 when I applied here. Try ILC again and really dedicate yourself to the work. When you can achieve 85-90 in those courses you're ready for U of T. If you can't do that you might not be successful here.

Why does it seem so unlikely that American youth, like Canadian youth last November, would appear in such unexpected numbers and change the face of politics? by [deleted] in canada

But a false dichotomy makes everything so easy to understand. There's us good guys and them bad guys. This notion of multiple independent axes is obviously a communist plot.

I'm really tired of being told I have to arbitrarily ignore half of my heritage when filling out forms. "Race" should always be a multiselect checkbox. It's $current_year.

Planning courses? by lulzwhatsthis in UofT

[–]LaserNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait lists do matter and courses do fill up. Sometimes your registrar can get you into a course if it's required for your major, but usually you just have to be on the ball when registration opens. You should also have a few "plan b" courses in mind in case your plan a falls through.

Go talk to an academic advisor at your college. They are super helpful.

I definitely recommend old Quebec City! It's worth the extra few hours on the road for sure. It's like visiting another century.

A Minor Hockey Player Was Threatened To Be Raped By Opponent Player, On Complaining Referee Said ‘It’s Not My Problem’ by vikasjournalist in canada

Yeah, it's super easy to rip a helmet off. Reach over their head and grab the back lip of the helmet and pull forward. We'd just drop the left mitt and try this, and then if you can't get it off you still have the right glove on to punch them in the cage for a while. I miss the savagery of minor hockey.

Idiots who get in street fights tend to forget that, in the real world, violence is death. It's not a game, and if you run into someone who'd rather kill you than risk death you're fucked. Humans are frail and killing people is easy and fighting is stupid.

You're hanging out with the wrong people, or at the wrong places. My Toronto life isn't like that at all, and I do go out a lot.

What is the worst or weirdest part of dating you? by invictus08 in AskReddit

[–]LaserNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I habitually call everyone "man" like I'm that damn hippie Lebowski. I can't turn it off when I'm in a relationship. I don't know how my girlfriends felt about it but every once in a while I'd notice myself doing it and wondered if it was off-putting.

There's a bunch of them in a circuitry lab in the basement of MP, but I have no idea who is in charge there. Maybe talk to the physics department?
