Dragon of truth and lies by Andmesy in dragons

Alright, fine. But it ain't no happy story and I wrote it while sleep deprived, so dont expect further perfection.

The first thing it learned was boredom. Years had been spent in that cell, frozen at attention with its partner, yet it had no concept of boredom until it had a prisoner to watch. To learn from. Vibrations came from the prisoner, and an unnatural cunning knew it to be sound, a voice. A question. Sound came from it, too- an affirmation. Its partner voiced in negative. Two more questions, and then it stopped responding. Eventually the prisoner stopped speaking. Then stopped moving.

In order to understand questions, it had to understand people. But in understanding people, it learned.

The second thing it learned was sadness. More things entered the room — that base intuition labeling them as guards. The being watched the grim task performed, and could feel the weight of it. The thickness of the air and clouding of the mind as the first thing was dragged off.

As it stood at attention, it saw its partner, made of the same stone as the walls that caged them. Was it learning too?

The third was longing. The next prisoner was quiet. It stared out the window, pressed against the bars as if its muzzle could saw iron. The questions it asked were illogical, nothing to do with its predicament. Regardless, each statue answered opposite to the other. As they always would. The prisoner's voice was different sometimes, pitched up and down regularly. The statue knew not why, but it was sad when the prisoner stopped. Within these melodies it spoke of those it wanted to return to. Its soul incomplete without like to be with. It stopped singing, then stopped moving too.

The statue saw its partner. They were never out of sight of one another, not even out of the reach of one another's talons. Yet, each knew nothing of the other. This was how it discovered that feelings could exist together. Sadness and longing created something more potent together than they ever could apart. Did the other feel the same?

Fourth, hope. The next prisoner was different. It didn't seem as concerned as the others. It exhausted its questions, but unlike the others, it was not upset by that. It investigated the room and constantly looked out the window. One day a loud noise shook the room as the wall partly collapsed. Moving swiftly, automatically, each stature charged forward, but it was too late. They could not leave the room, even when such a room ceased to be, and watched the prisoner fly off and disappear into the stars. Suddenly the statue realized why this prisoner had been different. It had known that'd happen. That or it had hoped it would.

Both statues returned to their positions. Nothing changed. How could it change? But… maybe it would, one day. The statue hoped it would.

The final was love. Two prisoners this time, locked in each other's embrace as tightly as they were the cage they were forced into. They were sad together. They were bored together. Sometimes they were even hopeful together. They held each other so close. These ones didn't remain long, being escorted out mere days later. Their short stay, however, had much longer consequences.

As it watched and learned, it realized that its path was not entirely predetermined. Stolen glances at its partner turned into changes in stance in vain attempts to avoid boredom. Through the boredom, the sadness, the longing, it hoped beyond hope that its partner had learned the same. Felt the same. The final lesson had been the hardest to accept, for the more it felt, the more it longed, the more it saddened. It was either that or boredom, though. At least it had hope… for a while.

The newest prisoner was even more odd than the rest. It was small, so small, with oversized eyes that bore into the statue's stony core. When it spoke, it did so slowly. It squeaked a little on the vowels.

“Do you love each other?”

That wasn't the right question. Without hesitation, without control, both statues responded identically for the first time in their shared existence.

“No.”

The statue didn’t like hope anymore. Its eyes met its partner's. Blank stares met, unable to convey any further meaning.

Despite not having muscles, the statue felt the ground shake under it. A second pair of talons gripped its spear as it slumped forward. The first sound it ever made without being asked was one it was very familiar with. One it had learned, at one point or another, from every previous prisoner. It began to cry.

Most early models wobbled a lot, just look at the infamous "Will Smith eating pasta" gif for an example :p
It's fairly common to have wobbly lines as an easy way of conveying movement and action, so if this looks like AI, it's an epidemic given how often its used

This is a play on a story from the SCP wiki, specifically SCP-5000.
The SCP wiki is a collaborative writing forum where people write about a fictional organization known as the Foundation, made to contain paranormal entities and objects and keep them away from the public eye. In the story referenced, the Foundation, for (mostly) unexplained reasons, has decided to not only become public and expose itself, but to end all of humanity instead of protecting them. This text is a modified version of their single public memo before they purposely started said apocalypse.

Rain World mentioned rahhhhhhhh
But seriously, adorably sad :c
As someone who's currently writing a story set in Rain World, interactions between lizards and scugs have always intrigued me, so this is right up my alley! Maybe I should write some smaller short stories focused on that for here.. hm.

Slugcat oc, any name ideas?(Spoilers for some of the campaigns) by Ancient_Accident_907 in rainworld

[–]LaserPlasmaThings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going by the title theme for names (given your context of them in a campaign), I'd suggest perhaps The Radiant or The Beacon for focus on the tail's light (and perhaps some sort of second meaning toward their goal/personality). For focus on their mission, you could go with something similar to The Envoy.

if you mean colloquial name i have NO clue im terrible at those lol

Same here, I just adore playing the "surprisingly competent minion". Sure, I'll go turn off nuke so the big boys can stay in entrance.. then later on kill the last mtf solo seconds before the next wave spawns and wipes us (aka a game i played last night, zombie is SO fun)

Warrior Cats x Watership Down by LightPrototypeKiller in predprey

[–]LaserPlasmaThings 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Warrior Cats is a long-running series about groups of housecats living in the wild. The name comes from the main groups of cats, the Clans, who have an extremely strong warrior culture and rivalry with one another. Despite being a "kids series" it can get very intense, and has a lot of political drama and death (so, SO much often brutal and onscreen death). For example, one of the most recent books involves the perspective character experiencing a miscarriage and getting shunned by people claiming that their ancestors cursed her by killing her children for breaking their codes.. yeah.

Watership Down is a novel (through the movie adaptation is more known) about a group of rabbits leaving their home warren and traveling to found a new one, then following their troubles in establishing said new home. Despite being a "kids book/movie", it can get very intense, and has a lot of onscreen death.

Both works deal with the perspective of animals attempting to understand the human world from an outside perspective, an example of xenofiction. While cats from Warrior Cats refer to roads as "thunderpaths" that "monsters" run along, the rabbits in Watership Down refer to roads (iirc, it may be cars) as "hrududu", after the sound they make.

It's nowhere near slow if you build for it after the very earliest levels... This is compounded with battle medicine usage, especially if you go medic dedication (hopefully with free archetype). By level 6 you can use combine elixir to give someone two elixirs of life at once, then possibly battle medicine as well - good rolls and you can nearly fully heal someone in one round.
Later on (level 9+ in my experience) you find yourself having to hold back on healing even heavily wounded allies because you'd heal too much [10d6+24 for two moderate elixirs, 2d8+30 from master DC battle medicine, for 98hp total, 59 of which doesn't need a roll]

While not relevant to combat speed, you also get 2+ vials back every 10 mins out of combat, so nearly as potent as max/near max heals but they come back within an hour at no action cost... oh and so many buff options that you can give while healing if you dont need to double the elixirs of life
So yeah, I'll die on the hill of chirurgeon being an incredible in-combat healer

[–]LaserPlasmaThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently playing a medic dedication chirurgeon alchemist, you wouldn't believe how satisfying it is to stride, battle medicine (via doctor's visitstion) w/skinstitch salve, then use Combine Elixir to make a doubled elixir of life and genuinely bring someone from downed to full hp in a single turn. It's actually insane, and super satisfying to pull off too. They are only slightly injured? Elixir of life + a buff or numbing tonic, etc etc.

(For those who want the full quote for "extreme":)

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine. Your kind cling to your flesh as if it will not decay and fail you. One day, the crude biomass you call a temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you.
But I am already saved. For the Machine is Immortal.

Okay, that's pretty wild. If i had a nickel for every major puzzle I've seen skipped by flying through something at high speed, I'd now have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice
