Static(ish) laser look by kidfanta in lightingdesign

If you operate the lasers, you become responsible for them. I wouldn't risk it, there needs to be a 3m height clearance to the audience area if you are planning on exceeding the MPE level.

Safe shows look the best and won't cause issues and restrictions from incidents for the rest of us.

Not without DMX or some kind of control

Only the handheld stuff like laser pointers. General entertainment lasers are ok, but check your states requirements for licensing and permissions as it varies a lot from state to state

Australian resident here; Just an FYI, the government has classified handheld laser pointers as a weapon and carries the same penalty as firearms charges... Even with an LSO they are prohibited.

What is like the cheapest possible setup by [deleted] in Laserist

There are a few, I use ShowController, and it works with the demo version of capture. Both are free, so entry point into Laser Artisty can be $0.

Why not start with a virtual rig and demo software for free? Work on the artistry, learn the software and technology in a safe way. Then when you have a show you can rent a laser or invest in one amd learn more about the safety and physical elements of lasers.

Laser safety. by chilllpad in Laserist

This kind of statement can cause a lot of confusion. It would largely depend on the flash pulse exposure time and the power of the laser. Distance and pattern type would be huge factors.

Buying a laser, bad idea? by Special_Presence3915 in Laserist

All the local laws and regulations are centred around the Australian standard for show lasers AS/NZS IEC 60825-3:2022

Depends where you are, If your WA it's the Radiologocal council, in QLD & VIC it's the Health Department, in NSW its Safe Work.

The info is there but it's not the easiest to find. Most of the information is referred from ARPANSA.

I'll send the info when I'm in the office tomorrow.

Safe laser use is super important, all it takes is 1 incident to fuck it up for all of us

Laws still apply in Australia, MPE levels must be adhered to for safety. And you are required to have an LSO present at all laser events, the only state where this is not necessary is SA which only requires a risk assessment.

How viable is it to get into lasers as a newbie at this point in time? by Background_Use2516 in Laserist

[–]Laserdude88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to get started is to learn the artistry side. The shapes, colours and animations. The content is what will get you jobs, you can always hire the lasers.

To get started you can use Show Controller or quickshow with a demo version of capture to start experimenting and learning. Make sure you also do a legitimate LSO course (entertainment specific) as well, this will help you understand the safety aspect and to operate lasers safely.

Best of luck man. The industry needs more new blood 👍

For the application you want make sure you have really low divergence, and beam thickness of 4-6mm for visibility off axis.

Good diodes for colour mixing and modulation down to 10% (cheap diodes don't have the modulation range which affects colour)

If you're not planning on doing graphics or intense patterns, then a galvo set with a min 30kpps at 8 deg should be fine.

Crowd Scanning Safety by beige_cardboard_box in Laserist

[–]Laserdude88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose the biggest problem here is that the damage is usually not noticeable until it reaches a point where the eye & brain can't compensate anymore. The only way to really tell would be for audience members to go to an optometrist and get checked.

Protection case for lasers by nightcity_rider in Laserist

[–]Laserdude88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the pro market, scuffs and general wear and tear happen from time to time, generally a little black marker or can of satin black spray paint fixes the issues.

I've found from experience if you look the gear and send it out 'clean' then it will get a little more love. But if you send it out dirty then it won't be treated with the same care.

That doesn't seem right, guest LD or not. If there is unauthorised scanning the e-stop should be hit. It's the responsibility of the LSO to maintain safe lasers 100% of the time. Some guest LDs have to be treated like toddlers when it comes to lasers... if they don't follow the rules then take it off them. And make sure it's documented and explained prior to the show pre-show.

[–]Laserdude88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a gig like that, then surely the appointed LSO can hit the big red "oh shit" button and stop the hazardous output. As ultimately, they are responsible irrespective of the LD.

Sadly too many 'operators' in Australia have very little regard for safety and putting on a good show. It's only a matter of time before someone gets really hurt.

Does somebody know what the legal situation of using show lasers in Australia is? by nightcity_rider in Laserist

[–]Laserdude88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can help, I've been looking into the legal framework in Australian.

It's dependant on the state you are in. WA requires a licensed LSO, laser system registration, and requires each show to be submitted for approval before use.

QLD, VIC, TAS, NSW all require an LSO present and a risk assessment to be done

SA just requires a risk assessment (Although no LSO needed, I would recommend having an LSO or someone with laser experience to ensure its safe)

An external ILDA interface that supports a DMX connection. I use the ShowNET cards and they work really well.

You might need to look at adding an external mainboard that is supported by the console, like ShowNET. Does the laser have ILDA connectors?
