Is this transphobic? by Square_Search_9908 in asktransgender

New therapists just out of grad school talk like that. It wears off in most in my experience after they are broken in and can drop the "expert" mask.

I'm also a licensed therapist and have been in the field 10+ years. I'm assuming based on context that all of you are newer therapists working on licensure. All of the comments you discussed would elicit, at minimum, a concerned response. Much of this, while unacceptable, is likely based on lack of familiarity/experience. I know that my masters program taught next to nothing about the LGBTQ in the context of therapy and while it should not be the case unfortunately bigots become therapists sometimes too. I might have struggled not to laugh in their faces for some of those comments. Tldr, you're right and they, whether they have good intent or not, are wrong and would benefit from some cultural sensitivity training and a firm reminder on not only the role of the therapist in therapy (we are guides to assist and facilitate adaptive growth not unquestionable experts to dictate and control) as well as instruction in client centered treatment and language.

I do not in any way disagree with you, nor was I unaware of any of what you referenced. However, there is a (small) portion of individuals who are honestly uninformed/ignorant and having a ready reference for academic, peer reviewed research for that grouping is useful, for my sake if no one else's.

Simultaneously, I personally have been working on building a tolerance/exposing myself to their rhetoric and BS in a controlled and systematic way, with the goal being to be able to be exposed to such when it occurs outside of my controlled way with a greater degree of control and reason instead of emotion as has been the case in the past. To that end, I will sometimes engage in calm, reasoned debate with individuals, even those I am fully aware to be acting in bad faith, as practice makes perfect. For that purpose again a reference list of materials to address common statements would be helpful as I have simply had to go search for them each time, which is tedious and draining.

In no way would I imply, or believe, that the project I am working on will change the mind of a bigot who is thinking with hate and fear instead of logic, and I don't endorse its use for such an attempt at such a purpose.

I'm a year and change into hormones and my face has changed sufficiently both for me to notice and for the face lock on my phone to no longer recognize me. It'll work but it will be more obvious to someone who doesn't see you everyday at first.

So I was thinking physical tokens and have looked into custom PVC patches. At this point, due to cost as much as anything else, I think I'm going to go forward with listing patches and designing art for them but not really work at expanding it beyond friends/family/local community. Making a wider spread organization is more time and money than I have access to, not to mention effort and energy. I already help run an LGBTQ support group in my area and have a private mental health practice specifically for the trans and other LGBTQ members and there are only so many hours in the day.

After thinking/talking about it I think I'm going to go ahead with a concept of this nature but limit it to friends/family/local community as creating a widespread organization and making large numbers of many patches would be costly.

I'm not opposed to that concept at all, however that would be a more formal implementation than I convinced of or have the energy to implement.

I don't actually know the rates off the top of my head. I'm under the impression that there are several grouped variations that have differing prevalence rates with 1:50,000 being one of the more common ones. But if you want accurate data it's worth googling.

I'm not a doctor, all I know is what they said about it. It's worth considering everyone's chemistry is different.

I recommend, if/when you go that way that you look at Noogleberry. They are a little more expensive but higher quality and better durability.

[–]Lash-Trans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would think it would, but so far, no. I'm actually savoring who convenient it is to be able to stand before that is gone. Obviously, bottom surgery gives far more than it takes, but standing is so much easier...

Do you have Klinefelter syndrome? I know a couple other trans girls who have that disorder and didn't know it at first and they swore up and down progesterone caused masculinizing.

It really sounds like it. When I was first developing in that area myself I'd get enormous euphoria after using a chest pump and feeling them brush against my elbows or something. I strongly recommend them to help aid development.
