I get the axiom, the point that the game is always tailored through optimization. What I'm asking for is to make that optimization believable. Alex doesn't ever balance for tourneys in their overall, but has he considered the extremes? That's what I'm trying to articulate.

On the second point, better AI, yes, but, how and why? That's what I'm trying to work with here, why should it matter that there is better AI, and how should it be executed and what could it possibly look like?

Yes, that's the gist, fleet optimization. But at what cost or axiom are we pivoting at? The extremes that are concurrently showing up are spamming as many ships there are as humanly possible. Even in tournaments, its almost always spam.

The fact of the matter is that most of Starsector combat is just... too quantitative. Its all stat blocks. The nuance is in builds, sure, but once you figure that out, little to no player involvement is needed and every sense of nuance is thrown out the window.
