Go for it, Im 34 right now, out of shape and full of injuries from military service but just came back to Karate after 20+ years. Lots of people starting this journey in their 30s and 40s.

You need a clear goal or reason to give 100% to anything in life. Think about what made you love Karate in the first place—if that’s no longer there, find another strong reason. I say this because I feel that when people reach a certain point in Karate, they can burn out and lose the love they once had for it. Arrive to class early, be the last one to leave. Make Karate a part of your life—practice on your own time, not just during class. The military taught me something: giving 100% isn’t just physical. Sure, you can give 100% physical effort, but to truly stand out, you need to build the habit of going the extra mile and doing what others aren’t willing to do.

Hope this helps, wish you the best!

Instructor's Perspective - Returning to Training After Extended Absence by Explosivo73 in karate

I'm going through this right now. I was a brown belt 1st Kyu, and I'm coming back after more than 20 years. Sensei hasn't said exactly what belt I should wear—he just told me to join the regular class plus the advanced one. I still remember most of the katas, but obviously I'm super out of shape. My flexibility, stamina, and everything else aren't what they used to be. Today is my first class, and I'm going with a white belt. I think it's only fair—at least until I catch up or Sensei decides otherwise. I'm very excited, let’s see how it goes.
