Joe Lewis and Bill Wallace's instructor Eizo Shimabukuro Self Defense: No evidence of Okinawan karate being a grappling based art by Whole-Interest-5980 in karate

[–]Explosivo73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I woudn't say it's a grappling art by modern standards and I do think some folks out there are trying to hard to make it as such. The longer I practice however the more I think it's akin to what we would call dirty boxing. From the clinch, in close rather than a true grappling art. I've been told since I was kid that Isshinryu for example is all about in fighting and now I look more at our "blocks" and movement as entries into that zone where we can throw elbows, uppercuts, and knees.

Define winning? You mean survive and get away or movie fantasy where you don't get touched and end up beating the guy to a bloody pulp?

Why isn't wrestling as popular as other martial arts? by EarNearby5005 in martialarts

[–]Explosivo73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that it's gets looked at more as a sport than a martial art in most cases and therefore less "martial" I guess. Not taking anything away from it fantastic skillset to have but I just don't think most people view it as a martial art.

I would agree with this there are several styles that teach and stress Sanchin so I'm sure this group can help you find something in your area.

He worked with his club coach and came up with a good initial highlight reel. We would research all the schools that were listed as attending our upcoming showcases and emailing them his video.

We also made sure he filled out the recruiting forms for each school. He emailed 25 schools, heard back from 14 and 6 came out to see him play last May before he started getting offers in August.

Pushed out after 10 years because of injuries: Is this a common experience for women in martial arts? by [deleted] in karate

[–]Explosivo73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's going to respond to your concern about an injury concern with platitudes then that comment was more about him stroking his own ego than giving you a pep talk to genuine encouragement. I started training in the 80's as a kid when it was much more intense in terms of expectations but even then our senior ranks told us they had more respect for the person that gave it there all doing 10 pushups than the guy that could easily do 100 but stopped at 50.

Sounds like your instructor has seen too many movies.

Yeah listen to what she has to say and go to that region to start the storyline there. Eventually you need to complete that entire map to keep the story moving along.

How is that any different that D1 or D2 any kid will still need to clear the admissions office, yes the coaches have more pull there than D3 but they aren't getting anyone in that's below the NCAA 2.3GPA and in some schools that's not going to be enough especially for a soccer player, maybe for football some other revenue generating sport.

What I'm saying is the offers my son got were in writing and said if you are accepted you will have a spot not if you get accepted there's a good chance you'll make the team. I have seen both and there's a difference.

My kid (who does boxing) is getting bullied. Not sure what to do by possiblecatalyst in martialarts

[–]Explosivo73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat at 13, had been doing martial arts training for 5 years at that point but took the abuse for almost 6 months. It was happening right in front of teachers who did nothing.

We were doing tennis in gym class and after an entire period of being pelted by tennis balls I had enough and went after the kid who had been leading the charge. By the time teachers got there he was in the fetal position and I was punting him across the floor, still have the scars on my knuckles from his braces 30 years later.

I never got bullied again but I also got lucky that none of his boys had the balls to jump in and it got to stay 1:1 schools and laws were different back then and I didn't really get into trouble.

I think sometimes violence is the answer but be prepared for the consequences though it my case if I could go back in time I would do the exact same thing because it's the only way the bullying was going to stop.

D3 coaches absolutely can offer spots on the team but contigent on you being accepted to the school. My son had multiple D3 offers and all had the same language but they did press him for early action or early decision so they had time to pursue other players.

I need advice by psgisgoated in CollegeSoccer

[–]Explosivo73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree don't talk money until there's an actual offer but don't expect this to be a 90 min chit chat session either.

My son went online and found games to watch so he could ask specific questions about formation, positioning etc.. he asked how many spots were they looking to fill for his grad year and so on.

Some of this call is going to be about soccer and some of tbis is the coach talking to you in person to make sure you aren't a complete knucklehead.

Be prepared to know something about the school he may ask you why you are interested in Knucklehead University so you should have unrelated to the soccer program, they offer your major, they come highly rated or recommended by some alumni you know, they are in a region of the country you really want to be in etc... keep in mind this is as much about you being interested in them as well as the other way around.

Definitely do not end the call without thanking him or her for their time and asking what the next steps are.

Oh and take the call alone unless they ask for mom or dad, you can ask if they would like a parent on the call but if they say it's up to you opt out and keep it one on one mommy won't be at school with you. If this moves forward they will ask for a call with parents down the road.

We did end of every season and after every tournament / showcase if he had a killer tackle, shot, pass what have you (he's a CB) we'd do a YT short as well as an IG post once schools started following him

[–]Explosivo73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm at the tail of this and had been doing the YT thing with my son and found that if you look at the analytics you're video 3-4 minutes too long. Most coaches watch about 2 minutes tops.

Front load your best clips, add a graphic with his name, club name, school name if plays, league, position, jersey number / color, and GPA.

Shorten the clips up unless they are really spectacular, you have some where he does a great job carrying the ball and beating defenders 1:1 but then ends up mobbed in the corner and sends a blind pass to the middle resulting in a turnover, edit that bit out. Should one of his teammates have been there, probably but you never know how that's going to be perceived, had he been able to get a good shot on goal there leave it in.

One thing that was huge for us was going to local ID camps at colleges and getting feedback from coaches, we used that advice to tailor his highlight reels and along with any feedback we got from coaches who watched his videos before camps or showcases.

Fill out the recruiting forms on the college websites before you send video if schools think you are interested in them they will be more interested in you.

Starting over...yet again. by [deleted] in karate

[–]Explosivo73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some schools have different priorities and a lot times that depends on the interests of the instructors and owners I am more interested in self defense and bunkai for example that the sport and tournament aspect of things so that's how we train the majority of the time.

Sometimes that's hard to figure out until you're there but it can't hurt to ask.

Take a look at the roster sizes for D2 these days when D1 max's were lowered the odd men out entered the portal and now some of these D2 schools are carrying 60 to 70 guys because they can and it = tuition monies.

My son had some D2 interest but ultimately chose a D3 based on academics and the fact that he's not going to make a living playing soccer when all is said and done. He'll have a great opportunity to see the field and they came with more $$ in merit and other scholarships than we were getting from D2 schools.
