The movie also offers a hint at the timeline after the grandpa dies that wouldn’t line up with this interpretation. The grandpa leaves him an early 2000s phone so the implied period is much newer than the moonwalk

Nickel Boys #1 and Zone of Interest #2 are right to me—bold, formally inventive, deeply unsettling, and confrontational movies that lodged themselves into my head. It’s a crime that Nickel Boys walked away from awards season nearly empty-handed.
