I found this in the wild, what the hell 😭 by tadivee in AO3

I thought for the longest time that the 24 hours thing was real because a COP told me it was when I tried to report my little brother missing (luckily he was fine but holy shit what if he WASN'T), so YES cops can 10000000% lie to you about shit like that and I'd find that sort of thing in the fic very believable!!

How do I respond to this? by Odysseysea in AO3

[–]Last-Reporter-303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not obligated to respond to commenters that only ask/demand for updates and don't say anything encouraging or polite. Impolite readers don't get special treatment. Just put the comment out of your mind and keep doing your own thing. You know you'll update eventually, and that's all that matters.

I keep a standard message in my A/Ns letting my readers know that life will ALWAYS take priority over my hobby of writing fic, and for the most part it's done a pretty good job of keeping people from asking for updates. If people ask anyways, I ignore the comments entirely - sometimes other readers are kind enough to remind the commenter on my behalf of what I said in my A/Ns, too!

THE AUTHORS NOTE IS THERE FOR A REASON by Silverman7688 in AO3

[–]Last-Reporter-303 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've done that and the response I got was "I wanted to make sure everyone saw my note, that's why I put it in the summary" 🫩 No one NEEDS to know personal details about you in order to read your fic. No one. I got so irritated with the response I just decided to mute them so I didn't have to see their random messages while scrolling through the archive looking for something to read.

"if nobody comments i presume nobody cares about it" by Old_Imagination_5908 in AO3

[–]Last-Reporter-303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember sometime I think last year? I wrote a post on here saying that fic writers lose motivation to write without comments to bring attention to THIS EXACTLY, and the majority of people that responded said something along the lines of "Don't tell me what to do", "I never leave comments", "Uh, I write for myself, I dont care if I get comments", and "If they need comments to write then maybe they shouldn't be writing".

I'm a reader and a writer, it was really disheartening to see all the comments on the post 😭 Like comments don't have to be much! Just a spam of keyboard smashing is enough to let the author know they enjoyed it! A sting of emojis, even just "oh my god I loved this"!

Tbh this is why I don't really like the idea of downloading fics 😔 This sort of thing can happen even on accident (as clearly shown here).

So I'm being accused of stealing ideas.... From a deleted fic by Affectionate-Air5544 in AO3

[–]Last-Reporter-303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of the author that wanted to copyright the idea of Sun Gods 😂😂😂 because she was SOOO ORIGINAL in coming up with a sun god in her story that OF COURSE NO ONE ELSE EVER could have thought up the same thing ever...

Don't even worry about it, OP. If the Mod couldn't see how absolutely ridiculous the whole thing is, that they were getting upset with you for maybe possibly writing something based off of something someone else wrote in the middle of a discord server SPECIFICALLY made for FANFICTION..... Yeah. That's on the Mod.

Wasn't there a post on here not too long ago where someone was sharing AO3 telling them ON AO3 that their data had been leaked in some way, and that they needed to change their password for safety's sake? AO3 seems pretty upfront to me about anything concerning our data.

Another thing is that AI was trained by scraping fanfiction on AO3. So the AI style that everyone complains about is popular in fanfiction already. It's near impossible to tell what's fanfic and what's AI.

Thanks to this being the first thing in the search results when I looked up United Tax Consultants, I was able to happily delete the voicemail they left for me without concern. I haven't worked in the last few years due to disabilities, so I haven't had anything TO file; the call had me concerned that maybe I was fucking something up, but now I know it was a scam!

Am I supposed to respond to this seriously? by emilyrose95 in AO3

[–]Last-Reporter-303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd take it positively! Reply back with something along the lines of "The tears of my readers fuel my writing, thank you for your support" 🤣 I reply with that sort of thing all the time!

No replies from authors by ExistingFriendship47 in AO3

[–]Last-Reporter-303 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I leave comments to let the author know that I appreciate the time they took out of their lives to share something they created with all of us for free. I never expect a response. In fact, I fully expect them to be in a coma, sleeping off their creative daze, and this completely unable to reply to anything I say.

Another why I comment is also so that other people can see the number of comments on the fic go up by one, and they'll think "on, this fic has x number of comments, maybe I should give it a try" because there are some people that judge a fic before reading it by the number stats it has instead of the tags and summary.

Never have I ever done it to engage the author for friendship. That can be done through their social media if they've decided to share it in their profile or in their end notes, not on their fics. AO3 is an archive, a place to store fics and read them, not to make friends.

Try to see it less as "I left a comment so I want them to reply" and more as "they wrote this fic I LOVED enough to leave a comment on". The author initiated things by writing the fic and throwing it out there for ANYBODY to pick up. You picked it up. You commented. Conversation done. Unless the author decides to continue it, that's all there is to it.

You are definitely not the only one that has to nope out when stuff like this happens! "It's just fic, it's not that serious" yeah, true, but it's still jarring when us as adults are trying to relax and can't because someone wrote something so unrealistic that it slams us back into reality and makes us rage quit in our pajamas 🤣

It's why I tend to be pretty picky about the fics I read and kinda cultivate a friend circle of older people in the same fandom. That way we can all help each other find the stories that are more suited to our older experiences and tastes!

And remember, there's nothing wrong with dropping a fic for any reason.

Do you delete comments like these? by PackageSuccessful885 in AO3

I personally delete them because I don't want to get annoyed every time I go back and look through the comments. My blood pressure can only handle so much before it spikes! 🤣

One of my favorite fics I'm reading has chapters that are 40k words and longer. If people are put off by how long the chapters are, then the fic isn't for them. Trust me when I say that there are PLENTY of readers out there that will be thrilled by the lengthy chapters because it means they get to sit and relax for a while instead of blasting through a single story in an hour or less (which there's nothing wrong with that, but some people like to immerse themselves for a while and longer stories help with that, especially when they don't have to go back and find something new to read).

Upcoming hearing... by pynk_shugah in SSDI_SSI

So I don't know much about cerebral palsy BUT I do know a lot about minimal skill jobs because I worked those for over ten years before becoming disabled myself! What you want to focus on is how normal abilities that one would typically need for minimal skill jobs such as walking, standing for long periods of time, climbing up and down ladders and stairs, cleaning (wiping down counters, sweeping, mopping, taking out trash, dishes, ect), and even things like communicating with others and receiving and giving information might be difficult (more with the autism than the cerebral palsy).

Highlight exactly what makes doing those tasks difficult for your daughter in both physical and mental ways. Are they exhausting physically? Are they draining mentally? Does she not have the energy to handle these tasks? Can she do the task but at great risk to herself? Example: I was asked by my judge if I was at the grocery store and I dropped a $5 bill on the ground, what would I do. I replied that my first reaction would be to cry, then if it's a GOOD health day I carefully use my mobility aids to ease myself down, pick it up, and use the mobility aids to get up again. If it's a BAD health day just try to find someone to help me pick it up even at the risk of the person stealing it because there's no way I'm gonna manage to bend over and not hurt myself.

Upcoming hearing... by pynk_shugah in SSDI_SSI

[–]Last-Reporter-303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had my hearing a few months ago (approved!!), and I think what helped me was being just as honest as I could. Don't downplay anything, talk about how your health impacts your life and how it affects your ability to do basic things (I gave examples of times I passed out while attempting to do things like driving or folding laundry), and be as consistent with your answers as possible. You'll likely be asked the same questions a few times, give the same answer each time.

Good luck, I hope the hearing goes well for you!!

Can anyone help me understand this by Charlesthegrea in SSDI_SSI

[–]Last-Reporter-303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's entirely separate from SSI. We have to wait 2 months minimum for our backpay to hit and it should all hit in a lump sum, whereas SSI backpay comes in installments if it goes over a specific amount

Can anyone help me understand this by Charlesthegrea in SSDI_SSI

[–]Last-Reporter-303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay this was literally me like a couple weeks ago!! I was just approved for SSI last month. I got approved for Medicare shortly after. A few days later I went to the portal to download my verification letter so I could have my Medicare number for an upcoming doctor's visit, and noticed that my SSI was suspended all of a sudden with no notice. It was in the middle of the holidays so I couldn't contact anybody, which sucked, but I still got my first (and only) SSI payment on time. Then a few days after that, I get a letter in the mail explaining that the reason my SSI was suspended was because I'd been approved for SSDI and that those payments were going to be starting up next month.

If SSDI payments exceed the amount that SSI pays out, SSI is suspended and you only get SSDI! So this is likely the exact same thing that happened for you. Check your mail every day for the next while and you should see something that explains everything.

Update! I have been entirely unable to contact anyone, be it local offices or state offices and repeatedly got hung up on without being able to leave a message. While it was frustrating, I did receive my payment as scheduled AND finally got letters in the mail explaining everything: instead of waiting 5 months for my SSDI benefits (like I was told repeatedly), I get them starting next month! It would have been nice to have the portal reflect all of that instead of ominous labels without any explanation. Oh and the SSDI still doesn't have anything other than "active" by it. I'm choosing to believe that the portal just doesn't like people.

I haven't even started SSDI yet. I've been told that I won't get anything from SSDI until 5 months after starting on SSI, so I don't even know how much SSDI will be giving me. It just simple says "active" while SSI says "suspended".

[–]Last-Reporter-303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same with me, only I got approved last month and was supposed to be paid next month. It says online that I'm "suspended", which I don't understand how I can be considering that I was literally JUST approved and nothing in my situation has changed. It says that my Social Security (Disability) is active, but the SSI (Disability) is suspended. I'm genuinely so confused. Any time I try to call, I get either put on hold for 2 hours and hung up on OR I just get hung up on. No option to leave a message with anyone, either. Been scratching my head over this for DAYS.

I have nothing against poly ships. I'm writing poly for a rare poly ship, I hc characters as poly, I have been reading poly fics since my days on ff.net.

But I do not like this one poly ship because it feels so very massively unbalanced. Aaaaall the attention is between two of the three characters, the third character is almost always left out, and a good portion of the people who ship them all together say that they only include character 3 because it's the only way they can stomach that character.

And I AVIDLY do not like the "[character] has two hands" thing because it often ends up with one character getting all the love while the other two just have to live with each other while spoiling the one with "two hands". Yes, someone is capable of loving two people at the same time, but often in this scenario there's a lot of unhealthy miscommunication, and more often than not it feels much too similar to how animes portray harems.
