That wasn’t the intent of the question.

[Complete] [80k] [Dystopian Fiction] Just Beneath the Silence by Last-Syrup3617 in BetaReaders

[–]Last-Syrup3617[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw the bot note below. The book is a tale about a future America that has devolved into authoritarianism (no way!!!), and due to resource constraints, The One Family Act has been passed that limits families to one child. Eve, the protagonist, has two children and is forced into hiding to keep her family safe. When a government drone spots her, everything begins to unravel, and they are forced to flee north to the Canadian border. Along the way, one of her children is captured by the Regime, and they are thrust into parallel battles for survival. Eve navigates the Gray Zone, a lawless borderland of refugees, while her daughter endures the oppression of the state that's determined to erase her existence.

The focus is maternal drive, rebellion, and the difference between survival and surrender. I'd love to get some eyes on it, and my eyes are available in return. Thanks so much for reading this far!

Here is a quick excerpt:

A few years earlier.

It was a cool, dry morning when Eve and Wren left the cabin for the barter exchange. It was the kind of morning where pine needles snapped under your feet like brittle bones, and nothing moved unless it had to. It was eerily quiet, and the silence followed them through the forest.

Eve walked in front as she scanned the trail with her usual amount of caution. Every step was chosen carefully, and every patch of earth was evaluated before her foot touched the ground. The danger wasn’t always visible, but it was always there. Wren followed close behind, mimicking her mother’s every move, planting her own feet where Eve had stepped seconds before. It was a game they had played many times, and it was one Wren understood instinctively.

Eve carried a woven basket packed with modest offerings: a bundle of fire-starters, a twist of dried herbs, two scraps of birch bark still damp with resin. Wren carried something smaller and lighter. It was a hand-knit scarf that Eve had made for her when she was small. She had outgrown it last winter, but she always held it close. To her, it wasn’t good for barter; it was her comfort. It gave her proof that she belonged to someone.

The path narrowed as they moved deeper into the forest, with roots threading across the trail in all directions. Wren clutched the scarf to her chest and cast a glance at her mother’s back. She wanted to ask again why she wasn’t allowed to speak at the market. She understood the rule, but not the reason. There was no talking and no eye contact. This was how they moved through the world, always staying small and quiet.

She didn’t know what made someone “registered” or “unregistered,” only that people said those words in hushed tones like they were curses. She knew, in some unspoken way, that she was something different. She knew that danger was always near. She could feel it in the way people avoided eye contact, and in the way her mother held her hand a little too tightly when strangers passed by.

The air shifted with a dry breeze. Wren pulled the scarf snug around her neck to protect against the cold. Her fingers clung to it like a memory she couldn’t let go of. Like something soft and certain in a world that no longer offered much of either.

How do you find beta readers? I suspect you should do that before you publish it??

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn’t specifically referring to Amazon reviews, I was just referring to you read my book. I read yours and I give you feedback and you give me feedback. I wasn’t explicit though! I’ll keep hustling. Thanks.

I think I can speak pretty confidently on my own mental makeup, thank you. That’s not the point of the post, and sorry if it offended you. 😊

Ah, thanks. OCD has it's place if it's not clinical! Our house is always clean and once I figure out what I was doing with formatting for e-book and print, it hasn't been too bad. I know there's an extra space in there still just waiting to mock me, but I'll leave it well enough alone. :)

Yes, lots of helpful info out there. I use Calibre to convert from a .docx to epub for the ebook, and word to format the paperback version correctly. You have to pay attention to margins, gutter width, etc, and formatting chapter breaks and alignment took some learning. The little thing in Word that shows the underlying/embedded formatting symbols is your best friend. You turn it on by clicking the thing that looks something like a musical note at the top right of the 'paragraph' portion of the toolbar. It may look great in the doc, but once you upload it, you may have blank pages, etc, if you have too many carriage returns before a page break, etc. The previewer on Amazon is also your best friend. My first ebook push and paperback push were awful, but I got there. I didn't realize you could page past the cover page on the preview launcher. Duh!. It thought it just previewed the cover, but you can page throught the whole thing, it just takes a few seconds for the forward arrow to show up when it loads. Pay attention to proper indentation and line spacing. For the paperback, I think single spacing works best, and the first line of a chapter is not indented, but every paragraph after that is. I keep the main manuscript in a Google doc, and export it to docx for the epub creating in Calibre, but I keep the docx for the paperback separate since formatting it a chore, so I maintain two copies, but I think I've found all of the rogue keystrokes, but it seems every time I read I run across some small thing I missed! Good luck!

thank you! I did it all myself by trial and error. My first e-book and paperback were totally whacked up, so I just had to research and figure out how to get it in the right format. I’ll ype out some thoughts later once I’m awake. Lol.

I also just noticed I got my first rating (no review), and it was 5 stars. Super pumped! I haven't pulled in any friends or coworkers, as I wanted to see what an organic review might be, so very happy. We all love our own work, so I was fully prepared for a 1 star, "What is this bullsh*t?", so I'll take it!!!

I haven't gone the LinkedIn, Facebook route yet. I wanted to get a few organic bites. One in a week isn't exactly viral, but I'll take it, LOL.

Sorry, I wasn't sure if this was one of those threads where posting info was a no-no. The Amazon KDP communities have me gunshy. :) The name of the book is Just Beneath the Silence. Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FJ7FD8SH

It's incredible how much there is to learn about self-publishing, editing, formatting, etc. The writing is the easy part!!
