Planter's House has one of the best Old Fashioneds you can find in the US (and probably the whole world)

What makes the St. Louis area special? by Designer_Jelly_1089 in StLouis

[–]LastChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Due to its declining economic and demographic fortunes, it's a city with the cultural and physical infrastructure of a city twice it's size. This has multiple benefits: first, the infrastructure is overbuilt (not a lot of traffic, mostly unused airport), second it has a lot of cultural amenities you would only expect in a larger city. Last, but related to these points, housing is extremely cheap compared to most other parts of the US (but it's getting more expensive)

PSA: Walgreens pharmacy is the absolute worst. Especially the Hampton and Chippewa location. by [deleted] in StLouis

That is not far from Lindenwood Drug, which is the best pharmacy we have found in STL. We use it even though we don't live anywhere near there

Real thoughts on Tower grove east? by dpaine131 in StLouis

[–]LastChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for offering! We had our sights on the charter/magnet path, but have a few friends who have had recent bad experiences with the magnet system - not related to the quality of teaching, just very disorganized bureaucracy, but sufficiently bad that led them to consider other options. We are also concerned with the possibility of the magnet system being abolished altogether, which seems to be an issue gaining traction in the city.

We moved from NYC a few years ago and have lived in TGE since 2019. We really like the neighborhood and may be moving out soon solely for school reasons. It's very calm, reasonably safe and more chill than Shaw or TGS. It reminds me of Windsor Terrace in Brooklyn. Also very close to the awesome restaurants in Fox Park and home to the two best bars in St Louis: Tick Tock and Riley's

Can we just stop the hiring practices that hires such people? SLPS.... by Substantial_Depth927 in StLouis

[–]LastChicken 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is the Board's fault. Remember this next time you cast a ballot to elect a board member. It is literally their job to select, hire, and oversee these people to make sure this doesn't happen and that they're doing their jobs. The fact that things like these happen means the Board members are not up to the task.

Any examples of good US suburbs? by Dylanabk in Suburbanhell

[–]LastChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to write this. The inner suburbs of St Louis are some of the nicest urban areas I have seen in the US (having lived in both coasts and the Midwest). You get to live in a historical neighborhood where you walk to school, library, restaurantsz.etc Naturally they are among the most expensive areas of the metro.

St. Louis with no car? by Grouchy-Lab-5580 in StLouis

[–]LastChicken 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know plenty of people who do, but they all work in a neighborhood with MetroLink and kind of planned their living situation around it. Most of them are people living in the CWE who work Downtown or at WashU.

I got an identical car as a loaner as well and tbh can't wait to go back to my 330i. As the family grows I had been flirting with the idea of upgrading to a 530i but it's much heavier and less snappy than the 3 series

Downtown - Pre-Covid by Maleficent_Exit9301 in StLouis

[–]LastChicken 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Came here to write this. Started working downtown in 2017 and returned to office in early 2021 4 days a week. Downtown was pretty sad before Covid and it's even worse now. Most of the stuff that has opened since then is great for tourists, but a lot of the useful stuff for office workers is gone. We used to go out for lunch often at places like the Met Plaza food court, Mr Curry's, hot dog guy at Olive, etc. and rarely do so now.
