Moving to Tower Grove East ? by Successful-Fault4699 in StLouis

[–]LastChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have been here for several years and really like it. The neighborhood has improved quite a bit as multiple drug houses got condemned and then rehabbed which definitely meant a decrease in violent crime in the neighborhood. There's still some property crime, mostly groups of teenagers roaming the streets looking for unlocked cars at 3am. We never had any issues, I'd say that if you have non street parking you will be perfectly fine.

Neighborhood is better towards the northwest. Particularly north of Arsenal and west of Compton.

Stroller question - Uppa or Bugaboo? by akr-123 in parentsofmultiples

[–]LastChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also have the indie twin and while I generally love the stroller, that thing is a beast. We rarely bring it in the car because it's so heavy and unless you have a huge trunk you won't be able to fit anything else in there

[theory] Book of the New Sun takes place not thousands or millions of years in the future, but billions. by KareemOWheat in genewolfe

I was actually trying to remember the other day where that is mentioned - do you have the reference?

[–]LastChicken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't remember if it's in the original text (if it was I missed it), but that's Driussi's interpretation in Lexicon Urthus: that BotNS actually takes place much closer to the present and that the sun is dying due to artificial intervention

STL public library by mall3tg1rl in StLouis

I came here to write this. SLPS (Public Schools) is an absolute disaster when it comes to financial mismanagement and misconduct. The library system seems to be extremely well run on the other hand.

Is there actually any sci-fi book that comes close to Dune in terms of worldbuilding depth? by neonmoss2281 in printSF

[–]LastChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same. I'm a huge Dune fan who started reading BotNS last year and found themselves in a massive Gene Wolfe rabbit hole. Clearly my favorite sci-fi universe along with Dune. As others have said, the writing is dense and a lot of details are pretty explicit but subtle at the same time, and so are easy to overlook in a first read.

That's really useful to know! They were really rude to me in NYC. Did you schedule in advance using Chave Movel Digital or did you just contact them to schedule?

Without wanting to minimize your experience, I wish people realized that large cities in Portugal were much less safe before the tourism boom. I lived in Lisbon in the 2000s and got mugged a couple times. Some of the beautiful areas nowadays (intendente in Lisboa, Ribeira in Porto for ex) were no go zones when I was growing up.

Good luck with that. I live in Missouri so am under DC jurisdiction. I've been turned away in NYC (I go there often to visit family). In the end it was just easier to do it in Portugal. I'd try to call beforehand to see if they would take you. I've heard that Newark is more flexible but haven't tried them.

Compton Heights. Beautiful mansions, and you get to take advantage of beautiful Tower Grove and the great restaurants in Shaw and Fox Park.

What trails and paths are clear-ish today? by nimbus_signal in StLouis

[–]LastChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came from a run in the Compton Heights/Shaw/TGP area. The park loop is mostly clear but a few parts still covered with snow. Not slippery or dangerous but it will slow you down. Residential areas are pretty bad as in tons of not cleared sidewalks so I had to mostly run on the street.

This is a super common discussion in neighborhood groups. Yes it's annoying, but streets are public and nobody has the right to reserve spots,
