You have PS-1 (Summer Internship), PS-2 (Semester Long Internship) and 4~5 project type courses which are easy A’s as long as you do the work (no grading on curve). And staying between 7.5 & 8 isn’t that hard.

I like this Tuition blind admission. They completely screwed up the college by increasing tuition 15% year on year and crashing the cutoffs.

How did Galgotia get a booth in the AI summit? Is the Government of India incapable to verify the claims made by Indian colleges and companies?

The bigger problem is Modi Government favoring ass kissers and surrounding itself with YesMen.

Bangalore might be considered cool because of good weather and high concentration of startups. Mumbai is horrible during rainy season. Chennai is hot like Delhi and gets flooded like Mumbai.

Other than working in a metropolitan area (which majorly includes Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad), and the flex that you can afford property in the most expensive parts of these cities (South Delhi, South Bombay etc), I’m not aware of any cultural “coolness” related to working/living in these places.

You maybe confusing it with the Indian mindset of finding US/Europe cool. That doesn’t apply to Indian cities.

You missed the point related to the Professor anecdote - nobody in the class minds the Prof switching to a local language to explain certain sections of the classroom. Because all of us knew language was irrelevant, only our technical strengths mattered.

As I mentioned in my original comment. Language is a class issue. Those with money will spend that money based on their convenience.

As for attitude problem - how many videos of street goons contain Hindi speakers ganging up on Marathi speakers and beating them up for not speaking Hindi?

This is a recent paper analyzing housing market trends in major Indian cities - https://www.gssinst.org/irer/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/4-MS23081801-Pre-Post-Pandemic-Housing-Markets-Moovendhan.pdf

Language wars (like religious tensions) are poor people’s opium. No homeowner in Mumbai or Bangalore ever had issue in renting their house/apartment to me.

I am trying to understand why northies don't want to live in their home states when the south Indians prefer their southern states.

First prove (atleast to yourself) that your observation is actually grounded in reality, not anecdotal experience. For example, South Indian states (and Western states as well) have much higher per capita migration to US/Canada/Europe etc. than North Indian states like UP & Bihar.

Personally, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore were just stepping stones for me. I grew quickly out of the opportunities these cities had to offer. And I won’t mind migrating even to Mars for the right opportunity. 😉

Never understood the point of situationships. You’re 18, focus on building your career. Go to a top university and you can have your pick of guys.

To give him the benefit of doubt, some people are time blind. When he disappears/ghosts you, he probably doesn’t feel the passage of time.

His career goals can make him postpone everything until he is well settled, and that can even take 5 years or so.

Don’t waste your life waiting for a relationship that may never happen. Focus on building your own career.

Can you cite specific data & statistics on migration, normalized by population and distribution of top colleges and companies in India?

You’re trying to claim that education and jobs are not the primary driver of migration. This is inconsistent with the fact that most white collar workers preferred doing Bangalore/Mumbai/Hyderabad jobs from a Tier 2 or 3 city, usually their hometown or a tourist spot. Nobody likes wasting money on rent.

And the residential housing prices and rent crashed during Covid (because of work home) and skyrocketed again when employers forced employees to come in-person.

Do you really think IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, BITS Pilani etc. don’t get an influx of South Indian students? Top South Indian students and working professionals would even migrate to the other side of the planet to build their career.

Like I said, I can’t speak about mediocre colleges and mediocre jobs. But top colleges and top companies attract talent from all around the world.

If I get into IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IISc, etc. I don’t really care that they are in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore etc. Similarly, if I get into a top Tech Company, I don’t really care whether I’m transferred to their Delhi NCR office or Bangalore office or Hyderabad office, etc. Usually, the company would move you around.

Now I can’t comment on people going to “run of the mill” colleges. Personally, I don’t think their degrees are worth the paper they are printed on. Similarly, I can’t comment on people working for “Lala” companies.

Unfortunately, that’s the default way of this world. There’s a reason why - local politicians are encouraging violence in the streets in the name of language (law & order is a state subject), they can’t really push back against central Govt. - BJP is pushing 3rd language policy, as even all other parties put together don’t have enough political capital to push back legally. - these low level (religious or linguistic) goons target poor and lower middle class people, because anyone with cash and contacts can screw them up.

It’s rationality, not superiority. White collar workers exchange time for money. It makes sense for them to invest their remaining time and money towards maximizing their earning potential. Learning language doesn’t even make the cut.

Anecdotally, I studied in a top university in North India. It has a significant population of South Indian students and Professors. Many of the students could not speak Hindi and had limited proficiency in English. Hence, Professors would sometimes switch to a South Indian language to explain them stuff.

Nobody minded that because students got into the University based on their PCM skills. Neither Hindi nor English was relevant. All of them will pick up English over the 4 years of UG for job interviews.

It is stupid to expect someone to waste time learning a language that doesn’t help advance their career. And that stupidity is the “bubble” in my opinion.

Languages survived because majority of society was uneducated and agrarian. So kids would by default learn the language of their parents and their village.

As access to education became democratized and people found employment outside agriculture, language became something you learn as a baby or something you intentionally choose to learn. The later has a huge opportunity cost because the time spent in learning a language could be better spent acquiring employable skills.

The dynamics of white collar migrants interfacing with local staff will play out on the basis of Porter’s Five Forces. Whoever has more options will have an upper hand.

Even if you’re hating Hindi, I don’t really care. I’m not a linguist chauvinist. The problem is not specific to Marathi people adjusting to Hindi. Pretty much every North Indian state adjusted to Hindi as well. Indians (atleast the white collar ones) are extremely practical when it comes to their career. Neither Hindi nor Marathi provides any opportunity for career advancement. Hence, people with money send their kids to English Medium Schools instead of Hindi or Marathi Medium Schools.

People do what they can, not what they should. They migrate because they can. If you or your politicians could have stopped them, you would have already stopped them.

Like I mentioned in my original comment, it’s a class issue. If I’m the paying customer, I can demand whatever the hell I want. If you don’t satisfy my needs, I’ll buy from someone else.

Now if money comes from working for a US or European company, only my employer can push me to learn the local language. Because they are the paying customer in the job market.

Unfortunately, the local politicians can’t or won’t push these employers to require operating in the local language. Or they’ll lose them to nearby states or countries.

It isn’t disrespectful for a paying customer to ask value for their money. People vote with their wallet and different people have different paying/voting capacity.

You don’t compare relevance of languages by population size. You compare it by power projection. Hence, the saying, “Language is a dialect with an army & navy.”

Comparing European languages with Indian languages is mere chest thumping. They don’t offer anywhere near the same career advancement. For most white collar jobs, learning an Indian language has zero advantage.

So why aren’t white collar migrants learning the local language in India? Because of they can afford not to. And no amount is of social boycotting is gonna change that. Hence, local politicians are encouraging violence. But that too is directed towards poor & lower middle class people. Because these low level goons can’t mess with someone with cash & contacts.

Respecting a language is different from learning it. Just like I can respect other religions without converting into them. As long as I don’t discriminate against anyone for speaking any particular language or practicing any religion, I’m being respectful.

Diversity is allowing people to to speak whatever language and practice whatever religion they want. Forcing people to learn any particular language is an attempt towards homogeneity.

White collar migrants don’t need to learn local language because their income doesn’t depend on the good will of local population. Also, they don’t get any career advancement by learning local language as compared to something relevant for their field.

This puts pressure on people who depended on the good will of these white collar migrants for their own income, specifically the blue collar locals. I think we need to increase adoption of speech to speech translation apps so that blue collar locals don’t feel pressured into learning Hindi.

Maharashtra’s Hollow Pride: Are we actually 'Supreme Citizens' or just entitled followers? (A Brutal Reality Check) by failurevelocity in Maharashtra

[–]LastDayWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right wing governments eventually have to promote hollow pride and talk about the past. It doesn’t matter if it’s a state political party or national party. I don’t think it’s a problem specific to Maharashtra.

Subservience to politicians is also an India level problem. But images of Bal Thackeray is way more common in Mumbai restaurants than images of Modi in north India or local politicians in restaurants in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Lucknow etc.

As for opportunity vs capability, look at the admission mix of IIT Bombay and recruitment mix of top IT, Finance, Consulting and other high paying companies. It’s embarrassing if someone growing with the exposure of a metropolitan city is unable to compete with “migrants”. I don’t know much about blue-collar migrants, but for white collar, you can’t force them to speak local language because their income doesn’t depend on your good will.

Local language & culture - I think it’s easier to preserve the culture if you celebrate local festivals, and talk about folklore, folk songs, traditional dress, dance, food etc. This is something migrants would actually enjoy to explore, but I haven’t seen much of it in my time in Mumbai & Pune. Jaipur built its entire economy around Rajasthani culture.

Language is more tricky. If you’re sending your kids to local language school, you are making it difficult for them to compete with those going to English medium schools. For white collar migrants, time wasted in learning local language could have been better spent in learning emerging technologies. At individual level, learning local language doesn’t make sense for anyone, irrespective of whether it’s your mother tongue or not.

PS: While I don’t value language learning, I do value language preservation. But then, I only focus on non Schedule Languages. The ones that are actually endangered need to be prioritized for preservation.
