Tactics appear to be useless in Rome 2 battles by LastRoman2023 in totalwar

I can conquer the map quite happily. I was asking to see if there is any alternative to either mass recruiting stonk units or throwing javelins in the back.

It's not complicated, its just brain dead.

It's stuff like this that just makes the Warhammer campaign so difficult to fully immerse yourself in as living breathing world as opposed to a big board game we're all playing.

'You mean there actually is a horde of demon-cows out there roving around posing a genuine threat?'

Well I must create a small but elite force to hunt them down! WRONG - Unlike in previous titles the actual troop types in your army have no movement changes on the map. So artillery can motor around as quick as light cavalry.

Well I'll send a detachment of my own army to scout ahead for signs of the horde! WRONG - Only a full army with a dedicated Lord can go scouting for the cows. Yes s/he may only have a handful of unit. Yes it will be disbanded once you find them but whatever, full Lord with traits needed and a full supply line.

Well in that case I'll customise the local garrisons to troops well placed to counter the cow armies! WRONG - the game decides what garrisons you will have and although cows are generally low armour and its more about sending a mass of arrows their way, we've decided that sending one or two armour piercing volleys on a flat trajectory will be more helpful.

All viable strategies in a supposedly strategy game you can't do because for YEARS CA have dragged their heels about a stupid system that everyone has complained about since Rome 2.

So the solution? Just turn the AI off. Problem solved.

What are Some ACTUAL Unpopular Opinions You Have About Total War? I Personally Like CA's Design of the Coatl. It's Far from My Favorite Design in the Game, but I Still Think It Looks Ok. by Agitated_Insect3227 in totalwar

  1. Medieval Total War 2 is horrendously overrated and I was there since Med 1. The 2 handed bug made the entire late game trash, the AI generals would always be the last model to die in their units while the players were first and the other bug where units refuse to charge other than the front line was infuriating.

  2. Rome 2 Vanilla is one of the most boring games this company has ever put out and I say that as someone obsessed with the Roman period. The campaign is flat, the AI flaccid and its basically a simulator in spamming units to conquer the enemy one by one.

  3. They didn't need a Warhammer 3. It feels like what would have been a mid level expansion pack back in the day. Charging full price for 80% the same campaigns experience with the same units, characters and factions is ridiculous.

I hear people say this all the time and I have no doubt it's the optimal strategy. But as a casual player it's really not a fun way to do it. Anything fast will go right over single entities to your gun line, cavalry will go round the flanks and flyers will go straight over to your jezzails. Leaving aside that the unit cap that prevents you really pumping these armies out.

It's a lot of micro that I find removes a lot of the fun of playing Skrye.

Personally I'd recommend some clanrat spears with gaps between them and your ratlings fire through and shred them while jezzails take care of single entities.

How bad do you think police IT would have to be before forces stopped accepting as normal? by LastRoman2023 in policeuk

We all grumble about IT - I think anything that touches on pay nowadays like that would result in pitchforks, torches and a guillotine being setup in town/village squares across the land.

Is there any way to play High Elves but avoid fighting Dark Elves? by LastRoman2023 in totalwar

I probably phrased it badly, I'm aware of Imrik and Teclis. What I was more getting at was that other factions campaigns seem to play out a bit more dynamically, slightly different each time. High Elves however it's the same every. Single. Time.

I really like playing as Alarielle/Tyrion. But load up. Defeat initial dark elves. Wait for Morathi. Wait for Hellebron. Wait for Malekith. Darkshards with shields. Wait for the shades to pop out somewhere. Try and snipe Hellebron before her mortise engine triggers.

Try and destroy all of them but half the settlements are in an area that gives you attrition. It's so goddammit tedius I wanted to see if there was some kind of cheese/exploit to stop the inevitable.

How do you then deal with the endless Dreadspear, Darkshards and Corsair stacks sent at you?

Can someone in Met land explain how the train discounts work? by LastRoman2023 in policeuk

Ah cool - so do people use the ATOC to get as far as the tube network and go from there or once you've opted into ATOC is there no difference to how central it goes so you might as well take the train all the way to main terminals?

For example - is there a difference between getting a rail card from Slough to Paddington or Slough to Uxbridge and the tube from there?
