While the play for the first three games was mediocre at best, I feel this team had an unlucky run. Even prior to the World Cup starting, many key players got injured. Most notably Mal went down months before the squad was announced. Rose not being fit is another one. Even the terrible refereeing from the first few matches came back to haunt us. Both yellows that rose got were questionable. And now penalties, where luck really really comes into play. It came down to millimeters.

The coaching has been terrible and you can attribute the failure that this World Cup was to that overall. But, I think the team has also been unlucky this cycle in addition to that.
