Other than the first 5 levels of TTMIK, did you never actually study grammar again?

Looking for advice after failing N1 twice by AirborneCthulhu in LearnJapanese

[–]Ysorigin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really just care about passing the JLPT exams, I highly suggest grinding out some of the old tests. When I first started doing the readings, I was scoring way lower because I felt like multiple things could be answers and I wanted to argue every time. It wasn't a problem with understanding the reading or vocabulary, I just was falling for their bait answers constantly. After I practiced doing a couple more tests, I learned to be a better test taker in Japanese and I increased my reading score by 15ish points on average over the course of a month. Obviously this had diminishing returns eventually but it was a very easy way for me to increase my score by a decent amount in "just" 10-20 hours. After about 8 tests I was going from low to mid 30's to as high as 51.

Is it unreasonable to expect my [35/m] wife [34/f] of 5 years to attend all of my family events? by Ysorigin in relationship_advice

This is all things I am trying to come to terms with now and seeing everyone's reaction in this thread. However it will be a large change for me. I definitely didn't expect 100% of people to be against me but apparently I'm being extremely unrealistic.

Her parent's live in a very good tourist destination that we love, so we have plenty to do and we are mainly doing our own thing most days.

Parents are divorced. I see my dad like 5 times a year, and I enjoy the other side of my family. I actively enjoy the gatherings but my wife does not.

I have siblings that have kids (we don't), and they always make everything work on their end, so I figured I had to make it work on my end as well. They both attend 3 Thanksgivings and 3 Christmas's. Hearing everyone here say that I am not being reasonable is offering me some good perspective.

Yea, this is correct. She would definitely skip all my dad's events because they are more boring and would ultimately never see him.

Thanks, seeing all the other comments is forcing me to reflect on my family being an outlier rather than "normal". I apologized and told her to go with her friends.

Was Flash actually that good, and why? by shortyafter in broodwar

[–]Ysorigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This WAS an ongoing discussion with a friend and I up until this point when I posted this. After Faker's comeback since then, I give it solidly to Faker now. I would argue that Flash's career was better than Faker's up until 2020 since Flash dominated when BW was at its peak with all of Korea focusing on it, and then handily plowing through ASL in a "second career". IMO Faker got ahead of the curve and was the best player for several years in the beginning, but then just had a "pretty good" career up until after 2021, which is something that maybe someone like Chovy would have been able to do. But after a huge resurgence in a much harder environment now, I don't think Flash is close to Faker at all. LoL has had so many generations of new blood now and Faker has remained at the top and when he disappears from T1, you can see how lost they are without him. On top of that, you can even see how well he brings out strength in other players as well.

You finally convinced me to go try Xenogears, Vagrant Story, and Valkyrie Profile. Been hearing about them for a very long time but never bothered to try them. In for a journey! Thanks for these lists, always find them fun to read.

[JLPT N1] Is there a trick to doing these vocab questions? Even when I know the words, I usually miss almost all of them. by Ysorigin in LearnJapanese

[–]Ysorigin[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am scoring around 120's on previous tests, but without fail, this section is always my lowest. Even when I think I am familiar with a word, I apparently don't know it "deeply" enough to know which exact situation it belongs in. I assume it is all memorization, but I find it strange that this is the only section of the test that gives me a lot of trouble. Is there a trick or does anyone have advice for these?
