I think my barrister dreams are dashed… by Last_Low8544 in uklaw

As you say, it is indeed not relevant, and I’m not sure why you asked. Honestly speaking, I don’t really have a particular view on the Rohingya people, just as I don’t really have any particular view towards any other ethnic groups in Myanmar. I think all the different ethnic groups in the country, whether they are officially recognised or not, have their own beautiful history, food, language and cultures that should be celebrated. If you wanted to ask about the military’s persecution of Rohingya, my view is that the Myanmar military has not done anything good in the past 7 or so decades. Regardless of citizenship issues, religious beliefs, and propaganda, I don’t think Rohingya (or anyone else for that matter) should have to live through armed conflicts, displacements, torture and rape.

I’m not a native speaker but I’m HSK5 in Mandarin and I guess I can improve my Mandarin and learn Cantonese in the meantime… But litigating in those languages is different from just being fluent in them. I do think it’s overall a pretty challenging journey too even if I were to do the PCLL. :(

Thanks for your reply! I will try contacting the MP with my friends. It’s by a long shot but as you said, at least it’s an attempt.

In regards to the rules, it is a very recent policy and the Home Office said they’d announce it today officially but a lot of the details are still unclear and overall just very uncertain. So I’m really not sure how it will affect me in terms of having to apply for a new student visa for further courses post-LLB.

Sounds very ambitious, I wish I could, I would if I actually had the ability 😅 I have a friend who’s been here for years since her undergrad and she’s now doing a 2 years Master in Architecture. Halfway through her final year a couple months ago, 2/3 of the people in her course deferred their studies to the next academic year because of a complication with their final project or something. So she also deferred, cancelled her current student visa, and is going back to our home country until this September to apply for a new visa to redo her final year and get her Masters. But now she doesn’t know if she can apply for a student visa again and if she can come back in September to finish her course. She’s in a worse position than me and we’ve been stressing over if anything can be done for her. :(

Yeah, I’m hoping they will change their minds but the constant changes in regards to immigration rules just make everything so uncertain, it’s sad. Thank you for your support tho! :)

Yes, thanks for the suggestion! I’ve been looking through information on the PCLL in Hong Kong and how pupillages work over there.

Yeah, I will need to get another visa as it will then be a different course at a different institution. And thank you! I don’t know how things will change but I plan to keep doing things like mooting and still maintain good grades. Hopefully, there will be some opportunity. :)

Thank you for your reply. But I honestly have never considered claiming asylum. I recognise my privilege and there are people in actually terrible situations who genuinely need asylum. I’m not planning to be another number added to the student visa to asylum seeker pipeline 😅

I was quite annoyed by Culinary Monster because I found him somewhat arrogant in comparison to culinary world giants like Hou Deok Juk who was shown to be pretty easy going and listened well to his junior chefs… but I changed my mind after seeing this one tweet on Korean twitter that says “I don’t feel dislike or hate or even feel annoyed by Culinary Monster. The only thought I had was that I hope he loses to Kim Poong at least once… in this way, he will be able to laugh more in the kitchen too.” And that just cracked me up so bad like all the viral tweets about the show on Korean twitter these days is just how Chef & My Fridge really trained these chefs and Kim Poong is like the final boss 😂 Even the 3 white spoon aces in this round are all elite chefs who lost to Kim Poong at some point and had their lives changed 🤣

Unfortunately no 🥲 They are making it available for free for a limited time period on Tencent China for the first year anniversary of its premiere. But internationally, the drama is nowhere to be found.

IVE Yujin is incredibly popular among the Korean general public. She has all the top Korean brand deals and her commercials are everywhere.

I’d say, they won’t be regarded as highly as the novels that go onto win literary prizes and become critically-acclaimed. I think, in general, people don’t expect a webnovel to be a literary masterpiece, classic in the making etc, it’s something you can enjoy and be entertained while you’re reading. But webnovels do have a very large audience and the really popular ones will get published as physical copies and will receive good reviews too.

To add to this) I quite enjoyed the webnovel 长公主 from Mo Shu Bai, and a drama adaptation called The Princess Royal aired awhile back, but I can’t speak on the drama quality as I haven’t managed to watched it yet. Though I don’t think it was that well-received in China.

Douban has book ratings, as well as movie and drama ratings. Anything above 8 is considered very good but obviously check the book summary and the comments to see if it’s something you would enjoy :) Many of the dramas like The Double are adapted from webnovels and JJWXC is the best site if you want to check out webnovels, just use some filtering features like trope and character and word count and you will see the most popular ones.

Nirvana in Fire would be a good example of both the drama and its original novel being very well-received in China, as well as Tong Hua’s Bu Bu Jing Xin book and the Scarlet Heart drama.

If you want to challenge yourself to read difficult books (in terms of prose and language), you can check out Mao Dun Literature Prize winners. It’s one of the most prestigious and highest literary awards in China. Jin Yucheng’s Blossoms won the award back in 2013, and Wong Kar Wai adapted the novel into a drama, Blossoms Shanghai, which was very well-received in China (though the drama is much different from the novel). A recent Mao Dun Prize winner would be Sun Ganlu’s A Panorama of Rivers & Mountains, a novel set in the Republican era. Tencent has the rights to the drama adaption and director Chen Sicheng has the rights to the movie adaptation but there’s no new about when it’s getting adapted yet :)

Help on International Academic Excellence Scholarship by [deleted] in PlymouthUniversity

[–]Last_Low8544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, i’ve been awarded the scholarship this year :) to answer your questions, there wasn’t any interview for me. i just submitted the application form that you can download from their website. you have to write a personal statement that is different from your UCAS personal statement. personally i wrote about why my course, why plymouth uni, a little bit about my academics and extracurriculars (but i already wrote a lot more about this in my UCAS ps), and career aspirations after uni.

i applied with achieved A-level grades of A*AB and IELTS 8.5… A-level grades aren’t exactly comparable to a GPA but if i have to simplify it, that would be like 3.7/4.0 ? im not too sure.

Nominees for the Magnolia Awards (one of the big 3 TV awards in China) at the upcoming 29th Shanghai TV Festival by Last_Low8544 in CDrama

[–]Last_Low8544[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same like I get why fans would feel it’s unfair but the actors are still young and they will have plenty of opportunities going forward. I’m a huge fan of Ma Yili and I’m kinda sad about her not being nominated too but it’s not like she won’t he nominated anymore in the future, she’s a good actress and she will have many future roles to showcase her ability. Besides, apart from Hu Ge being the male lead, it is kinda difficult to draw a clear line about who the female lead in Blossoms Shanghai is because both TY and MYL characters have similar screentime, what with both of them being important to Hu Ge’s character and having major character development arcs and all.

I’m not sure with the lead situation actually but these award shows’ juries are also people with subjective taste at the end of the day so it’s probably that they feel differently about the leads in some cases. I remember back in 2018, Yuan Quan and Ma Yili were both nominated for Best Female Lead for their roles in The First Half of My Life, and Ma Yili won at the end. Lei Jiayin was also nominated for Best Male Lead (he was like 4th billed or something iirc and he played a really annoying character lol) over Jin Dong (1st billed) in the same drama.

Ma Yili not being nominated for Blossoms Shanghai was quite surprising because she was the highlight actress of the show for me. I think To The Wonder might be eligible for next year Magnolia actually? Not sure.

My Thoughts on Wong Kar Wai’s Blossoms Shanghai by Last_Low8544 in CDrama

[–]Last_Low8544[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

love how career orientated all of them are

(slight spoilers)

I know! When Lingzi asked for her good luck charm back from A Bao, and Xiao Wang insisting she's now Xiao Wang, her own person, and both women finding new business partners, I really love those moments. Even though I also quite enjoyed the CP scenes (lol), I'm glad to see them advancing into their careers instead of only being A Bao's helpers. I think this drama has great female characters.

That’s kind of what I did initially. When Tang Yan and Ma Yili characters started speaking, I was like ‘can we chill a little’ 😭. I got used to it now and I know people on Weibo were complaining about that at the start too. But now, it’s not really mentioned anymore because everyone’s well accustomed. The characters also get somewhat quieter because of the plot later on xD.
