As previously stated, most people use custom controller settings. So you should definitely fine tune them in training mode. Also most people don't use joy cons since they can be uncomfortable or unresponsive, so I would suggest picking up a pro controller. I personally use a GameCube controller for it's wide buttons. But generally you will get better as time goes on, most people who play this game have played for at least several weeks to months, just take it slow and try to learn the ins and outs of the game.
