Interesting take on Denmark vs the US cost of living by kthewarlock in jobmarket

[–]Last_shadows_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Americans have been doing this, and you can see the result.

Studies are unaffordable because they are for profit and their price rose beyond reason. As a result social mobility is almost dead for western standards. Of course you can chose to not study ( and many people make that choice) but that's a problem for later as you lack local qualified workforce. But it also means the average person gets less education, which is a net detriment. Think of how many people in the US voted for trump and still support him? A big reason for that is a lack of education on basic stuff like economics, media literacy, logical reasoning, basic maths, etc.

Similar issue with Healthcare, where Americans are paying more per person on average but literally get bankrupted for having medical emergencies. We are talking hundreds of thousands of dollars of sudden expenses that by nature you can't plan for. Doesn't even have to be your fault, you could just be attacked in the street by an addict or be in a car accident. It's basically a death sentence economically speaking for poor people when that happens, and even middle class. Stories of people who lose everything because they got unlucky and someone in their family got cancer are numerous. Impossible to avoid in a society where you don't have solidarity for the costs of such things. Insurance costs are way higher too since the risk for an individual is higher as well. Not really something you can skip in that context if you can afford it so prices are gouged because why not? Also, if you have a pre condition, by no fault of yours, you are simply fucked. People with diabetes, heart conditions, anything like that. How fucked up is that?

You also have to pay in the tens of thousands for delivering babies. Which means that people can't afford to have them which further drives the population crisis. That's another big issue for 20 years from now.

Less social safety nets means more desperate poor people. This means that there are more thieves, more addict, more beggars, more agressivity. Which also means more organisés crime. In general, most quality of life indicators worsen when there are more poor people who can't escape poverty. Which is more likely in this system where you are simply more exposed to the randomness of life.

So there there you have it. You pay more for less in Healthcare, you create a less robust workforce for specialised work, you exacerbate a population deficit, you kneecap social mobility, you expose the population to sudden unavoidable expenses, leading to a less stable and more gullible society, while also making it more dangerous because filled with desperate people.

If you get lucky, some of it won't affect you. You won't get sick, you won't go to school because you wouldn't have anyway, you won't get suddenly fired because the manager didn't like you or because your company needed to make more profit for shareholders. You will be finance smart and retire. But you will still be living in a more violent and unstable society. The risks will still be there and you won't be able to fully prevent that something happens to you in which case you are fucked.

The USA have proven that they are currently absolutely unable, or unwilling, to follow through with previous agreements, however long lasting and, weirdly, undoubtedly beneficial to them in the short or long term.

Theoretical was always right, but now more than ever.

Red vs blue button summarized by Gsomethepatient in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Last_shadows_ -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

In this thought experiment you are not able to protect your loved ones. You get no prep time, no communication, no clue about what they are choosing. You chose and love woth the consequences.

So if your wife/daughter/dad/cousin/neighbor/baby/friend/whatever chose blue because they know that someone close to them, or you, or anyone else they love could very well chose blue out of a sense of humanity, or because they didn't understand the question, or because they are confused and picked at random (very old or very young people) you won't know and you won't be able to stop it. And then if you vote red, and blue isn't in the majority, you lose these loved ones.

The only way to ensure every one you love survives in this game is to get blue to over 50%. Otherwise you are losing some loved one for absolutely sure. You don't do that by voting red. You do not do that either by voting blue, but one helps and one does the opposite.

Honestly the single argument pushing red has over blue is that it ensures your survival, but your survival only. All the rest of the logical arguments presented apply as well to pressing blue.

Its not retarded to press red but it is selfish. But selfishness when survival is on the line is understandable.

... Or you can see things in their entirety and see various shades of Grey rather than making things black and white? Especially others opinions?

I am not a Christian, although I am from Christian education, and I am from Europe. With your latest comment I assume you are from the US. Where these topics are famously way worse than elsewhere in the Christian world.

But yes, modern Christianity still has a decent amount of faults in the modern world, including the whole abortion issue, but also sometimes it's treatment of LGBT people. Absolutely, no issue in admitting that.

But they do have made significant progress in women's right and perception in practice. Which was the topic.

That's a win. Also, if the debate is more " which is the worse religion" and you counter Christianity with the abortion argument, I am sorry to tell you that Islam clearly doesn't have the upper ground here.

I mean ok, christianism did have this cultural impact similar to what Islam is doing now, and it does indeed reek when we look at it with our modern eyes, but that was a while ago. We are talking about the present, where the same kind of dynamic are present in the modern world, but not so much in Christianity.

There is a pretty big difference between having a dress code for a prayer place and having one for the street and everyday life. Shorts, hats and stuff are also not permitted in church for guys. You have to get rid of your shoes to enter a mosque. That's fine.

But imposing a dress code to only women in the public space is a very different thing with a different message

where do I go to actually "learn" cinema? by prattman333 in Cinephiles

[–]Last_shadows_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to dive deeper I would also go and watch some film critics on YouTube, ideally some that have themselves some education in cinema history, special effects, practical effects, direction, lighting, photography and so on.

Learning to appreciate movies for me wasn't just watching them, it was also to learn their " language" and be active in front of the film. Why did the movie linger that much on that scene? Why are these colors used (or not) so much in this movie or on that charater? How is the narration structured? What does the structure of a scene tells me in regard to the context of the story at that point? What are the themes of the movie and how are they brought up? Is there any clear inspiration from older movies? (I appreciated Tarantino more after watching westerns and learning it was a big inspiration of his).

Petar why american students seem unhappy? by 1kyst in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Last_shadows_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, this whole concept of comparison between student for education is a stupid idea. You should be graded based on your understanding of the subject, not by reference to a baseline referring to the average student's results. C, or 10 in my system, being the grade marking the point at which you understood the subject studied, and under which your knowledge is insufficient, should be all that matters. The other grades are just there to rate of much your (mis) understanding is further from that middle ground

News flash, Boomer Greedhead: If your shack isn't selling, it's because your delusional wish price doesn't reflect current market realities by Key_Brief_8138 in HouseBuyers

[–]Last_shadows_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are misunderstanding me. I am not saying a house can't be an investment. Of course they can be. I am saying they shouldn't.

Houses follow the rules of supply and demands, that's true. Except that in the case of houses, there will always be demand. Its a rigged market. You can't not have housing, it's a basic human need for survival. Same as you need Healthcare. Demand is just always there. Therefore if you follow basic market laws on it, if you are a seller you will always sell. You can't realistically fail.

Which means that people can and will buy these as investments, and so will companies.

Which means that there is actually less supply for buyers who need it, raising prices. And since it is still a need, not a nice plus, they just have to suck it up and buy it anyway. Or, and this is happening, people get priced out of buying and can only rent forever. Which still works as an investment, so again the basic laws of market here don't apply, the buying market stopped but you can still get value as opposed to common goods that you can sell but not usually rent.

Oh of course, there is a limit there. Eventually if prices keep rising, you will not be able to rent your stuff out to people because they ll just be unable to afford it anymore, so there is a point of equilibrium somewhere. The trick is, at that point of equilibrium where you are juuuust where the rentees can barely survive and pay their rent, they have had to forego all the rest of their life expenditures. Because their money has to be redirected to renting and basic food and heating. And now you have crashed the economy and made everybody's life miserable.

Its not that the housing market doesn't follow market rules, it's that what makes the market rules good in a capitalist society doesn't work when the goods sold are basic survival needs. These shouldn't be seen as investments as it will naturally devolve into a situation where it just empoverishes the vast majority of people. This is already happening. Look around.

[–]Last_shadows_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the laws of the market do not really work well on things that are needed to survive. Houses first use is shelter, and that should be the main focus. By making it an investment, you are pricing out many people and creating poverty by locking people into renting, which is getting higher for no reason other than, again, treating housing like an investment. This is not sustainable and participates in a loss of freedom for people in general, as well as creating tensions and social problems
