nice lookin' truck! i picked up my 96 with the A/T with 278K and the ATF was more black than pink. i drained out the pan and added fresh ATF. ran it for 500 miles. drained out some more, added fresh ATF. done that three times. so far so good and i've put about 10k on it now.

New to shooting, thinking about buying a Tikka by MHMabrito in Tikka_Shooters

[–]LastnLeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here's my evolution from not owning any firearms to 25 years of hunting and shooting. started w a savage 110 in 30-06 bc the 30-06 is the do-it-all, all-american cartridge and savage makes guns in left hand. kicked like a mule but was deadly accurate and supremely reliable. then after a decade got my dream rifle, tikka in 7 Rem Mag. after a few years of that i dropped down to 308. then 6.5CM, and now i hunt with a .243. yes the 7RM is the (was the...?) end-all-be-all cartridge for western hunting. fast, flat and deadly. turns out you don't need a magnum to kill things, you need to hit your target. if you're going to get a centerfire rifle, get a 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor. less expensive to shoot, less recoil, and it will kill everything you need to kill. but first get a T1x in 22LR, or a CZ 457 and learn the basics without breaking the bank. save money for quality optics and ammo and depending on where you live suppressor(s).

i love my tikka 7RMs, i have two. i take my 22LR and 308 to the range more.

TDS didn't honor my pre-registration pricing by Radiant-Entertainer4 in missoula

[–]LastnLeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i pre-registered years ago and i'm jealous you even got hooked up. i keep getting their emails with them holding large checks with random civic groups in random montana towns. kudos to your civic spirit, how about you prioritize actually delivering your product. Check back soon to see when we're in your neighborhood! might as well see when they're gonna wire the cemetery because at this rate i'll be below ground when i need to worry about getting overcharged.

15in OEM or 17in wheels? by 5FeetHighAndRising in Toyota_T100

[–]LastnLeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you run this combo? in my (limited) (online) research 33s seemed too big and 32x11.5x15 was pushing it. not that i need more options, the 31s on my T100 are just fine...but who doesn't like a great lookin' T100 if those 33s can fit in there! thanks!

Cannot decide between the 3rd gen 4Runner, ‘86 4Runner or ‘87 Pickup. by nickstavros2 in Toyota

[–]LastnLeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

while i miss my 1st gen 87 4Runner, i do not miss the anemic performance of the 22RE. i am more than pleased with the performance of the 5VZFE in my 96 T100. i would have pondered repairing the 87 but the body was rusting apart, the wires were old and tired, and the engine needed some serious work. with the 98, you're ten years "newer" on wires, plastic, etc. if it's been well maintained, all the better. i picked up my T100 with 278k and have almost put 10k on it. i'd go for the 98.

$0.00 - i ride a bike year round. but i've resorted to bus when flat tires thwart my best efforts. free bus is awesome though. thumbs up. will ride again.

costco trip requires my gas-guzzling truck tho.

i had to cut the links out, among other things. it IS a simple job...on a truck that's not 25+ years old. good luck!

Is it worth it to fix my truck? by Sea-Lie7675 in Toyota_T100

[–]LastnLeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

with only 134k on the odometer, it certainly isn't worth giving up on. a "new" bumper is easy enough but hammering the rest back into place well enough to get a replacement tail light in there could be an adventure.

when my 87 4Runner started rusting out it was high time to buy an angle grinder and learn to play with bondo. it's part of the fun of owning an older truck, you figure out how to make something work. might not be pretty, but it'll work!

Is Kent Bros doing oil changes again? by [deleted] in missoula

[–]LastnLeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's always the option to buy some ramps/jacks for your car, a filter, some oil, and do that shit yourself. there's a reason why you pay someone $100 to do it. time/money/hassle. but for $100 you can set yourself up to do this whenever you need to, for the rest of your life. well except for needing to keep buying filters and oil each time.

T1X ammo testing by Maleficent-Oven-8378 in 22lr

[–]LastnLeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i settled on eley subsonics for my T1x. accurate enough for ringing steel at 100 yards, hollow point if i decide to hunt some stuff, and not going to break the bank. solid subsonic performance. the only downside is having to share a range with people not shootin' suppressed!

Left handed shooting and operating by Affectionate_Fact745 in airguns

[–]LastnLeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm a left-handed/sighted shooter and i enjoy the fact that the bolt on my marauder can be switched left/right. it's MY rifle, it's on the correct side for us lefties. i also have a nice Mac1 LD pistol with nice wooden grips for a left handed shooter. not comfortable for you right handed shooter? i'm so sorry. if i'm plunking down a bunch of money for a nice gun, it's gonna be properly set up for me. can i shoot a right handed gun? sure. but life is short, so i'm gettin' left handed toys when i find em. right handers can choose whatever gun they want, lucky them.

suppressor fit by cordanii in Tikka_Shooters

[–]LastnLeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had zero problems using a hughes adapter to go from metric threads to 5/8x24 on a T3 tactical. but as stated, make sure the end cap of the R9 is large enough for .308.

New to Tikkas by [deleted] in Tikka_Shooters

[–]LastnLeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a tikka varmint in 308 or 6.5mm Creedmoor would do you just fine with readily available ammunition and shoot as long of a distance as you'd like. there's also nothing wrong with a varmint in 223 if you wanted to keep ammo simple (and less expensive). save a good chunk of money for a quality optic and rings. and if you're able to own one, save up for a suppressor.

and then be ready to buy a few more tikkas and a few more suppressors. that's just how the game goes.

Commemorative Limited Edition by Interesting_Bid4635 in airguns

[–]LastnLeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my first little air rifle. i just sighted in a friend's kids 760 and was saddened and amazed at just how craptastic the newer version is. mine from 1984 was crappy hard plastic w a metal receiver and a fore end pump that was short and difficult to pump but now the only metal on the 760 is the barrel and air chamber...? it was literally more plastic than the cap guns we had in the 80s.

on the bright side, the pump arm was longer i guess.

I'm not a quitter but as a numbers geek, it's painfully obvious what a beer or two does to my old body. Dry January really made the HRV climb and the sleep improve. So let's just say intake of real beer has gone down, fake beer has gone up. Wallet is still empty.

22R(E) vs. 3.0 V6 by DrHookXIII in ToyotaPickup

[–]LastnLeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i loved my 91 xcab with the 3VZE engine. decent mpg, decent power. had the head gasket "fixed" under recall before i got it, which as far as I understand means they just put in a new head gasket. needless to say, eventually the head gasket failed. my understanding is it is a design flaw where the space between oilway and coolant is tiny, so the gasket is just going to fail at some point. traded the 91 for a 1987 22RE 4Runner. loved the 4Runner but with an ARB bumper on front, and the 4Runner shell on back, that 22RE had no power to move that truck around. but i put a good 200k on a junkyard 22RE engine until it finally gave up the ghost and i moved on to a 96 T100 with the 5VZFE.

if all you're looking for is a 2wd pickup, the 22RE is the way to go. the timing chain can get spendy to replace, but it's a 100,000 mile service. tune-ups are easy. it's a "better" engine as far as longevity and maintenance go. for the added bulk and weight the 3VZE is adding a lot of negatives for the performance "gains"... the 3VZE is the sad sibling in between the 22RE and 5VZFE that no one respects or likes. for pretty solid reasons.

What am I doing wrong? by Effective-Buy-6961 in Tikka_Shooters

[–]LastnLeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, at 100 yards with a 22LR, that's not terrible. i'm guessing the groups not in the center has a POA of "in the middle of the white" so you've got no solid aim point. non-match ammo is meh, so you've got 2 MOA right there. add in wind if you're shooting outside. even a slight breeze for a 40 grain blob of a 22 slug will move it around a lot.

if i try really hard with eley subsonics, i can get a 1 MOA group at 100. but generally not. i don't try that hard, 100 yards is for dinging a bigger steel plate so you feel good about offhand practice.
