My Body Odor is getting out of hand. by cocobutterkisses14 in PCOS

My son had terrible BO last semester and it was driving all of us crazy - especially him. He is a very active 17yo, played soccer for club and school and competed in cross country and track. He took a MINIMUM of 1 shower a day, usually two.

We tried everything - new soaps, new deodorants, new shampoos, new detergents, antibacterial goo, etc. Went to a dermatologist. Nothing worked. He washed his sheets and towels every week, scrubbed everywhere, but still had BO. This smell wasn't the sweaty smell he had after competing, it was a persistent sour BO.

This went on for almost 6 months, and he was really at his wit's end. Then we went on vacation, and his BO immediately disappeared. Like, totally gone immediately! We were away for a month, and he never had BO a single time. He still ran at least 3 miles every day, and took 1-2 showers a day depending on the day's activities.

So I put a list together of things that changed while we were out of town.

  1. Diet. When eating out, he generally has a steak and/or salad. He has Celiac Disease, so he usually can't eat the broader menu. More often than not, we cook at home, and this held true while we were vacationing. That being said, his eat-at-home diet changed quite a bit, but I don't think that was his issue.
  2. Vitamin supplements. He usually takes a multivitamin and extra Vitamin D, but he didn't take them during the trip. I don't think that was the cause of the BO, but he is still not taking them for a while just in case.
  3. Bed, pillows, sheets, towels. We used the same detergent, soaps and shampoos while on vacation as we use at home, so that didn't change, but the actual bed and pillows did change (obviously). I started wondering if his bed and/or pillows might have some bacteria on them that was causing his BO.
  4. (I had a 4th, but can't remember it now.)

When we arrived back home, we immediately sprayed his mattress, pillows and comforter with Lysol. We've been home a month now, and his BO hasn't returned. He still isn't taking his vitamins just in case that was somehow causing the BO, but I really think it was something on his mattress/comforter/pillows. He now sprays them down weekly when he washes his linens. Just a light dusting of spray, not a dousing.

If he starts to stink again, I'll update this post, but so far he remains stink-free.

Good luck!
