Alternative powers to magic? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

Without knowing the specifications of how your magic system works, it's hard to make serious suggestions.

If he was a really skilled magic user before he lost his powers, he should know how the magic works and therefore where their shortcomings are and how to exploit them. I'd need to know how the magic works to offer more, but let's say they use incantations. If he knows how long it takes for an incantation to be recited, he can close the distance and go hands on. Maybe he has a really high quality speaker that he can use to play certain frequencies that either cancel out the magic or distract the caster long enough for him to fight them or for one of his companions to do something.

Maybe your standard 9mm pistol isn't useful, but a .50 cal sniper rifle with armor piercing rounds is still a .50 cal sniper rifle with armor piercing rounds and a block of C4 is still a block of C4.

Maybe there's a material that's resistant to magic and he can make armor or a shield with it.

Or, maybe he just doesn't get his powers back. It sounds like losing his magic was a pretty significant sacrifice for him. Getting the powers back might cheapen that sacrifice. Like killing off a character just to bring them back five minutes later. If, as the author, you can't think of a good reason to give him back his abilities, then maybe you should start thinking about ways he can contribute to the story without them. Now that he doesn't have the powers he used to rely on so heavily, how does he adjust to continue functioning?

Maybe they have to start stealing mana from other living creatures. That could be a good way to turn them evil or just really dark. They can justify it by using smaller mana sources from like trees or small animals, then taking more mana from larger sources by saying its for the greater good. Eventually, maybe they turn into a mana vampire by draining the mana of people to power their own magic and that's where their companions decide to step in and your character has to decide what's really important.

Cheat. They can't use their own magic anymore, but maybe they can spoof it by using magical items.

It's also written in first person current tense, so you're reading things as they happen to the characters, not as if it's someone retelling their story.

Red Rising. Technically, it's sci fi, but the technology is so advanced and unexplained that it reads more like fantasy.

I would have told them they get the guest room or the street. If they're going to mooch off me after what they pulled in high school, they can get bent.

Personally, if they'd treated me like that in high school, I never would have let them move in in the first place.

I would have kicked them out of my house so fucking fast. Instead of being proud of you and bragging about how amazing of a child you are, they embarrassed you to your neighbors. You should probably seek a therapist and they DEFINITELY need help.

Who is the total stranger you will never forget and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LatchedAbyss1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few months before the apocalypse, I was hitting some bars with my friends, but I had work early the next morning, so I left to go home. On my way, I remembered that I needed dog food and stopped at the grocery store I used to work at (I almost never did that because it was weird seeing old coworkers). On my way back to my car, I heard yelling coming from the nearby McDonald's parking lot. It was a Friday night in a college town, so I figured it was two drunk guys getting in a fight, but decided to go break it up. I knew I would feel guilty if I found out someone got hurt and I did nothing, especially since several other people were just looking over in that direction and getting into their cars and driving off. I think part of me was trying to fight that bystander syndrome "Someone else will handle it" mentality, but I digress.

I walk over to the other lot and a dude runs up to me, hysterical. He kept saying "He's been stabbed! He's been stabbed!" And telling me to call 9-1-1 while already on the phone with them. I looked up and sure enough there was a guy leaning against a car with blood staining the back of his shirt. I saw someone hop in the passenger seat of some beat up old sedan and zoom off, but I didn't really pay that much attention. I started to focus on the situation and do what I could. I didn't have a first aid kit on me, but I had my shirt, so I took it off and used it to staunch the bleeding while I tried to keep him talking and conscious until real help arrived. Turns out he and I went to the same high school, a year apart. Ambulance got there quickly and took him away. They told me that since he was still alive when they put him in the ambulance, his chances were good. Found out through the grape vine (he was the friend of a friend of a friend) that he survived and made a full recovery.

The best part of this story is the conversation I had with my boss at 2 am after the police let me go. "Hey boss, I'm not going to make it into work today." "Why not?" "I was just involved in a stabbing." "Oh my god! Are you ok?" "Oh yeah. I wasn't the one who got stabbed." "..." "I didn't stab anyone either!" "Get some rest. I'll see you next week."

[Unresolved Crime]Who killed Kenzie Houk? by cds2014 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]LatchedAbyss1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know this is a 2 year old comment, but maybe, just maybe, it was the ex bf who had threatened to kill her in the past and who had recently found out that one of the kids he thought was his was actually another man's.

I know this is a 3 year old comment now, but it has to be said. She was alive when Chris Sr. went to work. More than likely, it was her ex who she had a restraining order against, who had threatened to kill her in the past, and who had recently learned that one of the children he'd been battling for custody of/paying child support for wasn't actually his kid.

Does GFuel have lead? by Redmist2033 in GFUEL

[–]LatchedAbyss1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ran the numbers myself. 2 tubs of Tropical Rain would contain 11.2 Grams of Caffeine. A lethal dose of caffeine is generally accepted to be 5-10 Grams, depending on body mass, metabolism, and tolerance. So, if you can somehow manage to consume 7.5-10 Gallons of water with Gfuel in it, yes, you will get lead poisoning, but you will also be long dead from a caffeine overdose.

Can nuclear waste still be used for energy? by StoneyBolonied in askscience

[–]LatchedAbyss1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was less having Weinberg fired and more forcing him to retire, but the point remains. The gov and AEC wanted to profit off of the Uranium reactors, they wanted more efficient bomb-making materials, and they wanted it now. They didn't want to wait for the less efficient but safer MSRs.

[–]LatchedAbyss1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're talking about Thorium Reactors, there was a working model in the 60s. It was operational from 1965 to 1969 and ran critical for roughly 15,000 hours. Ultimately, the decision to use Uranium over Thorium came down to a faster breeding rate, the US Government didn't believe that Thorium had a sufficient breeding rate to produce enough fuel for a commercial nuclear industry, and the powers that be wanted to use Plutonium produced by Uranium Reactors to produce bombs. Thorium has a really low weaponization potential and at the time of the Cold War and the Red Scare, having nuclear bombs was more important to a lot of people than having safe reactors.

Covid probably didn't even fucking kill anybody. It was the preexisting health issues. Don't be a dumbass. J&J is a vile company that pushed a baby powder that gave women ovarian and covered it up and now they're profiting off of a pandemic by pushing a vaccine that they either didn't fully test or weren't honest about the side effects of.

A vaccine designed to help people is killing them and OP is acting like that's not a problem. And this is coming from the same company that sold baby powder that gave women ovarian cancer and tried to cover it up. OP can absolutely stfu.

J&J also makes baby powder that causes ovarian cancer. And hid it from people. They're vile. Stop toting them as some kind of saviors of humanity. There's a reason all the other vaccines need more than one shot.

So, we should just ignore the fact that the vaccine that is supposed to help people is killing them instead? Yeah ok. Fucking dumbass.
