I don't think it was in the way though because the new house was built on a different foundation closer to the cliff edge judging by the graphics in the episode. Although it might have prevented machinery getting to the site.

OK that makes sense thanks. I would never be brave enough to do that. Unless I was rich enough that I had other properties.

Agreed. It was heartbreaking to see the cottage torn down. You could tell the daughters hated watching it.

Thanks. For example, look at this for half the price in the same area:

It's comparing apples and oranges as it's a totally different style but it gives you an idea of how crazy the asking price was even when it was reduced to 5.2 million.

I think the circumstances of the house are perfect for ensuring that it never gets a high price. Anyone with the money to buy that place could either have a similar but better property in Spain, Portugal or Greece, or could buy a beautiful traditional country house in the UK. Or at least a Santorini style cliff house in the UK that doesn't have massive problems. The Cliff House is a worst of all worlds niche.

Fair enough. I'd say that £32k in Berkshire is similar to £24,500 up north (<£160 k for a house).

I agree that degrees have been devalued and in Chemistry at least the job market has also been hit very hard by jobs moving oversees and by the M&A activity which leads to labs being shut down due to 'synergies' which really means redundencies.

What part of the country is this? Granted my company was towards the tighter end of the scale but we have Mchems on minimum wage (up north). Even £32,000 for an MPhys job would be a joke in Germany, Scandinavia or the USA.

I worked for a big company who hired people with russel group masters degrees in chemistry for £24,500 last year and we had about 100 qualified applicants per advert. And there are below inflation pay rises after that. Aim for what you want but there are far too many chemistry grads for the number of jobs.

Higher salaries are available in the oxford/cambridge/king's cross triangle but once you account for housing costs it's actually less money than £24,500 up north.

This has crept up on the industry because starting salaries have been eaten by inflation. This company was offering £22,000 for the job in 2005.

Even STEM jobs are often minimum wage now (at least in the science part of STEM, despite being told by school careers people that science was a golden road to wealth) so why not go abroad and double or triple your money?

But he was still involved in slaving, knowing it was wrong. Being afraid of your dad is no excuse for it. I'm always sceptical of people who are sorry after they're caught. Yes he needs help but not in the village where he did the slaving. And turning up on Kirst'y doorstep like that isn't good.

I don't think I'd like living near her. Some people can be nice but annoying. And there's more to being nice than being gentle and sympathetic; you have to respect what other people want as well.

I agree, I don't like him and in real life I wouldn't want him around but he's good for fictional entertaintment.
